I got my books yesterday morning. I've read through them completely at this point and wanted to pass along a critical news flash for folks on the messageboards.
I searched and searched and I could not find one rule that said you had to *stop* playing any previous version of Dungeon and Dragons if you play 4th Edition.
I Know! Hard to Imagine! I know *I* certainly had gotten the impression from many here that was the case, but it seems not!
Whew! What a relief!
The other news I wanted to share is that 4E is *not* like 3.5E! I *know*! I hadn't heard that either!
But now that we all know, hopefully people can *stop* *telling* *us* *over* *and* *over* *and* *move* *on*.
:-)

Sure, Pete. As long as you and all the 4E cheerleadres also stop telling us how great it is and how lousy 3E was *over* *and* *over* *and* *move* *on*. Deal? ;-)

Deal! Oh - unless it's to give feedback on the awesome PFRPG, then I want to be able to say "fix this lousy rule". Is that still ok?
And the image of me as a cheerleader should make you run screaming from the room. <shudder>

I also thought it was instructive that the DMG has a whole section about changing the underlying assumptions of the game (points of light, etc). Those concerns evaporate in about 3 pages of the ruleset, which is a fitting end(?) to 900,000 KB of misinformed internet threads.
I hope that the discussion gets toned down a bit on both sides, as well. Paizo 4e boards read like a series of letters written by the criminally insane.
