EDIT: Wait I'm confused. Are you trying to bullrush the batrider or overrun the bat or both? The bat is not interested in you in any way so he will not get in your way of an attack on the rider. I'll increase the rider's CMB to account for its large size as a mounted foe.

Spoiler:

OOC: Yeah, I'm confused in this situation, too. Orlan is essentially trying to knock the goblin rider off his bat. In which case, I probably should have added in a +1 bonus to hit due to his hatred of goblins. But Orlan isn't trying to engage the bat. I'm not even sure he can really.

With combat maneuvers no longer muddying things up by having grappling opponents share the same square...to me, that means the bat-and-rider are in a separate 5-foot square that Orlan can impact with his Improved Overrun feat. That means the bat and its rider can't avoid him. He's rumbling through their square in an attempt to knock the goblin down.

Presumably, I guess the goblin would normally get a bonus for his mount's "stability" factor...but how stable is a flying creature, really? If this was a horse, it'd be a no-brainer. But with a flying creature that's focused on grappling Yin...how much can it contribute to the goblin's ability to resist an overrun attempt? Or is overrun even applicable here? If you want to rule it's a bullrush, I'm okay with that, too. Orlan doesn't have Improved Bullrush so it would provoke an attack of opportunity, I suspect.

But, ultimately, you're the GM. Make it work however you like. I trust your judgment. And I trust I've explained what Orlan is trying to do.

Spoiler:

Okay. That's what I thought. I made this a bullrush on the goblin but added the mounts size modifier to the goblins CMB. The bat pays you no attention and does not attempt an attack of opportunity. You have improved bullrush so the goblin does not get an attack of opportunity. You easily unseat the goblin. See my note about this combat maneuver in the discussion thread. I've always wanted a maneuver like this and I think it works. How many times have you wanted to leap out of a tree and knock someone off a horse? ... in D&D I mean, not real life.

A furious ball of dwarf leaps into the fray and comes out of it with a goblin is so surprised he can't think of anything witty to say.

He can attack you however and does so, cutting you with a scythe for 1 point of damage.

The bat continues to burn but also continues to hold onto Yin. It's furious now and is beyond concern for its own safety. If the bat continues to grapple, Yin will begin to take fire damage as well.

Initiative order:
ACTED: Kamris (moves to get within melee reach of the bat)
ACTED: Orlan (dwarvish)
ACTED: Batrider (one wounded for 3hp)
ACTED: Manfred (moved into melee)
ACTED: Bats (the other 6 points and on fire)
Yin (harpooned for 4 hp but still throwing fire)

Female Human - Shoanti Wizard - 4

"Stupid bat!" Yin yells at the realisation that the idiotic beast isn't going to drop her and remains alight.

Spellcraft to cast (1d20+8=11) not including her +4 bonus on Spellcraft checks made to cast a spell or use a spell-like ability while casting on the defensive or while grappled that I keep forgetting despite it being there on her sheet!.

Lifting her hand again she unleashes a magic missile into the bat, wanting to guarentee a hit before it sets fore to her as well.

Magic missile damage (1d4+2=3)

And ... NEW ROUND! I suspect it will be the last.

There's a big burning bat battling beautiful Yin and a goblin that Klyndak has tackled.

OOC: Klyndak? When did he show up? Yaay! We found him pretty quickly! ;-)

Shrugging off the simple scratch afforded by the goblin's scythe, Orlan smashes forward with his light hammer...a feral gleam in his eye. "Yuh picked the wrong dwarf ta mess with yuh piece of shale! Wha'did'yuh do with muh cousin?"

Orlan's attack with his light hammer on the goblin rider... (1d20+4=[17,4] = 21 to hit, 1d4+3=[2,3] = 5 damage)

Male Half-elf Rogue 3

The half-elf slashes at the bat, trying to draw attention away from his fellow Shoanti.

Shortsword attack (1d20+1=19) Damage (1d6+1=6)

Okay. Thanks. Rolled it. He missed.

Sir Manfred runs up and lunges with the lance.

Charge attack: 1d20+1+3+2=17

Damage if hit: 1d8+3=9

Sir Manfred misses.

even with a flanking bonus thrown in

The wounded bat is furious and thrashing about. In its own thrashing loosens its grip on the spellcaster but not by much. The bat is still attempting to drag her from the rocky path into the river.

Yin is only 'held' now and does not need to make a spellcraft check.

Please confirm the crit Kamris.

Male Human - dash of elf Miniature painter/ Heroic

It isn't a threat. I got 18 on the roll (and then added 1 to get 19). A short sword threatens on a 19-20 roll of the dice.

Female Human - Shoanti Wizard - 4

"Just die already!" Yin yells at the burning bat as she aims another fire ray at the beast.

Ranged touch attack (1d20+1=12)
Fiery Damage (1d6+1=7)

As the spellcaster's attack goes wide, the bat tightens its grip but in its weakened condition cannot budge her. The flapping of the bat's wings fans some flames into Yin's face.

Time to end this. Have at it!

3 points of damage Yin and you are once again 'grabbed'.

Orlan flings the dead corpse of the goblin rider aside and looks over his shoulder at the flapping, burning bat with Yin still in its clutches. Grumbling to himself, he slips his light hammer back into the harness strapped over his chain shirt and seeks out his waraxe. After picking it up from the ground, he closes in on the bat, looking for an opening to put it out of its misery.

OOC: Move action back to where Orlan dropped his waraxe...resheathing his light hammer on the way...and second move action to close within striking distance for next round...assuming the bat survives that long.

As a consummate professional, the dwarf insists on the right tool for the right job and doesn't attack this round.

Wondering if his lance is somehow cursed, Sir Manfred hurls his lance to the ground and sweeps out his bastard sword.

Attack to the bat: 1d20+1+3=21
Damage if hit: 1d10+3=5

The survival instincts of the wounded and burning bat finally overcome its malevolent rage. It releases the spellcaster, flaps desperately, and manages to lift away from the assembled adventurers before the flames finally consume it.

Spiralling downward, the bat collapses on the rocky shore at the river's edge just ahead of you twitching as it dies and as the fire is extinguished by the wetness of the stones.

This battle is over. What do you do now?

Male Half-elf Rogue 3

Kamris goes over to Yin, "How is the hurt?" he asks calmly, checking over her wound.

Male Dwarf Fighter 2 / Cleric 3

"Yuh gonna be alright lass?" Orlan asks as he lifts his axe and drops it back into the leather scabbard strapped to his back. "I'm afraid I don't be havin' much skill in the healin' arts." He looks hopefully at the half-elf and then Sir Manfred before leaving the girl in their hands.

As they worry over Yintarah, the dwarf scans the hillside and the rest of the river gorge in case any further threats might be lingering around. Then he walks over to the goblin body and searches it for anything useful. "Shoulda been more careful," he verbally chastises himself, "Coulda saved one of these blights and squeezed a word or two out of their greasy heads about me cousin..."

Female Human - Shoanti Wizard - 4

Yin gives a small satisfied chuckle at watching the bat crash and twitch before falling still, she was always happy to know that she gave as good as she got.

Turning her gaze to Kamris she smiles lightly and places her hand over the deep wound in her leg. "Oh I'm fine, you know me!" She tells him, all too aware that he does know her well. She'd often tried to hide wounds from him to stop him worrying to no real avail but it didn't stop her trying.

Male Half-elf Rogue 3

"Hmm." he murmurs and retrieves a strip of cloth from his belongings. He ties the makeshift bandage round her leg. "We must keep this clean."

Female Human - Shoanti Wizard - 4

Yin smiles at Kamris, how he hadn't tired of her fiery and independent nature long before now was beyond her but she was glad he seemed to care on some level.

"Thank you, but it's fine really, you all worry too much. I'm still upright, right?" She declares to the group as a whole with a small bright laugh.

Male Half-elf Rogue 3

Kamris smiles.

"Yes, may it always be so."

Orlan wrote:

Spoiler:

Most of the equipment the batriders carry is goblin made and therefore practically worthless. The harnesses for the bats are a curiousity but not of great quality. The scythes are made from scrap metal. One of the goblins carries a silver dagger which has a bone-handled engraved with skeletal faces. It seems of too artistic (if you like that sort of thing) a quality to be goblin made.

Male Dwarf Fighter 2 / Cleric 3

"Well I'll be..." Orlan mutters, turning the skull-embossed dagger over in his rough hands, "This ain't no goblin-made sticker, that's fer sure." He slips the blade into his belt and rejoins the others.

"I 'spect me cousin and his band musta run afoul of these beasts as well," the dwarf tells them, "And seein' as how there's some of 'em left, that don't bode well for Klyndak. If they got 'im, we need to find 'em and either free 'im or teach 'em a lesson for messin' with a kinsman of mine."

He notes the bandage Kamris has tied around Yin's leg. "Yuh well enough to travel, lass?" he asks, "We need ta round up the horses and keep movin' if we can. No point in stayin' in this gorge if there be more bats flyin' around. And one of 'em got away. So we better keep an eye out fer it. Looks like it flew that way. If that's where it roosts, we may find the goblins and me cousin there, too. So I aim on aimin' us that way..."

Orlan then locates and gathers up the horses, attempting to soothe their frayed nerves from the battle. "What wouldn't I give ta have a surefooted mountain pony bred for fightin' right about now," he grumbled, "But yuh'll have ta do fer now. So settle yerself down. I'm here now. And there ain't no more goblins or bats to bother yuh..."

Sir Manfred slowly sheathed his bastard sword, sorely dissapointed that the battle was over without him being able to land a blow.
Turning to Yintarah, he said "That was well done milady," glancing at the smoke still rising from the bat corpse, "I pray your injury is not too great?"
Seeing that Kamris was tending to her, Sir Manfred grabbed his lance again and strode towards the dwarf, "The first challenge is beaten Sir Dwarf!" he shouted and clapped the dwarf on the shoulder. "We shall find your cousin in no time!"
With that he strode off to recover the mounts, making a solemn vow to have a training session with Tankard...

Female Human - Shoanti Wizard - 4

Yin gives a dazzling grin at Kamris' words before focusing on Sir Manfred. "My injuries are never too great!" She tells him confidently "As long as I'm still able to weave the flames nobody should worry about me, okay?"

Male Half-elf Rogue 3

Kamris remounts. "We should leave now. More may come." he says evenly, before setting off again.

It is evening of the fourth day of Pharast 4708 and the moon is half in shadow.

By the time the horses have been calmed and Yin has had her wounds bandaged, it is beginning to get dark enough that the humans will soon have trouble seeing comfortably in the half-moon.

The gorge is long and rocky with slightly rounded sides but not too deep at this point. The mounts will not be able to climb out of it but the humans could.

As far as you could tell, the bat that fled flew down the gorge went in the direction you were heading. It disappeared from sight before you could tell whether it crossed the river.

Male Dwarf Fighter 2 / Cleric 3

"Well blast..." Orlan curses as he peers up at the top of the gorge, "We won't be takin' any horses up there. And where'd that dang bat get off ta? The sky's too dark ta see 'im anymore. I reckon it's a bit dark for the rest of yuh ta see where we're goin' too. Might as well camp fer the night then. Somebody help Yin down from her horse and make sure the lass takes it easy and rests her leg. We'll be doin' a lot more walkin' tomorruh and I'm thinkin' she'll need her strength fer that..."

The dwarf dismounts from his horse and ties it off to a scrub bush, leaving enough slack in the rope for the beast to forage for some grass by the riverbank. Then he starts unloading his gear to prepare a cookfire for the evening. He looks back over his shoulder at Kamris.

"Hey...elflin'!" he says, "Yuh think yuh can find us some drift wood and kindlin' along the river and the treeline? We just need enough ta cook a meal tonight. Don't worry about findin' enough ta last the whole night."

He then produces a fishing line and hook from his pack. Tying it off, he approaches the river and looks for a decent fishing spot. For the next hour or so, he tries his luck at catching a meal for the frying pan.

Female Human - Shoanti Wizard - 4

"Yin doesn't need help down from her horse!" The wizard declares certainly, climbing down from her horse with only a tiny wince of pain as her feet touch the ground. "You all worry much too much, there are far more important concerns in this world than the slight scratch at my leg!"

Male Half-elf Rogue 3

Kamris looks round when Orlan calls him 'elfling'; his face betrays no trace of the insult he feels at this. He nods and goes off to gather materials.

Female Human - Shoanti Wizard - 4

Not one to stay still Yin bounds after Kamris, eager to follow him on his hunt firewood. After a moment she speaks up in a gentle tone.

Shoanti:

Spoiler:
"I can't in good conscience let look for kindling on your own with another bat out there, what if it came back and tried to carry you off whilst I wasn't looking?

Male Half-elf Rogue 3

Kamris nods again and says, Shoanti:

Spoiler:
"Now you are here, the bats will not bother me. They may get burnt."

Female Human - Shoanti Wizard - 4

Laughing lightly as she walks alongside her fellow Shoanti Yin continues to converse with him in their mother tongue.

Spoiler:
"But of course! You'd have thought the world would have learnt by now that you just don't anger a fireweaver!"

Male Dwarf Fighter 2 / Cleric 3

Orlan watches the young fire-witch walk off to accompany Kamris. He shakes his head once the Shoanti-talking pair are out of sight and earshot.

"They're a strange mix," the dwarf says to Sir Manfred as he recasts his fishing line, "Quick to action though. Same as yerself. Lucky for us we were all quicker than those goblins and their bats. It worries me though, knowin' there's goblins about these parts. Me cousin's got no love fer 'em either. I just hope he didn't get in over his head with 'em. Or worse, that those Kannonfodder fools didn't get him inta any trouble...or cause him to risk himself to pull 'em outta another of their schemes. If so, I guess I gotta risk me own self to get 'em all back home."

A tug at his line captures Orlan's attention and with strong steady flicks of his wrist, he winds in a fairly large river trout. "O-ho! There's a purty dinner fer us..." he smiles. Lifting it clear from the stream, he turns back to his pack to properly clean and dress the fish for frying. By the time Kamris and Yintarah return, he's collected several stones to ring their campfire, dug out a hollow spot for the kindling and wood they've collected, and has the fish resting in his frying pan.

It is not difficult for you to find firewood amongst the low trees above the gorge. The area around the gorge is rocky but lightly forested. Much of the wood is more brush than forest, but much of it does not have any foliage on it and it is easy for you to find fallen and dead branches.

Female Human - Shoanti Wizard - 4

More than a little knowledgable of things that catch fire easily Yin gladly picks up as much firewood as she can carry, talking lightly and amicably with her fellow Shoanti as she does so.

Comforted by the flames Yin settles herself beside Kamris, a distinct smile on her face as she watches the fire dance. After a long moment she finally speaks up again. "If there's a chance of more bats and goblins what are we going to do about sorting watches through the night?" She asks curiously.

Male Half-elf Rogue 3

Kamris says quietly, "I would not think so; the evidence of our passage will be warning enough. And now we have a fire."

Male Dwarf Fighter 2 / Cleric 3

"I hadn't planned ta keep the fire goin' all night," Orlan responds, "But if'n yuh think yuh'll need it ta feel safe, I reckon we can let it go. I'll take watch durin' the dark part of the night and let the coals burn down low so's not ta attract attention. Yin can stoke the flames again after that. And Manfred can help her keep watch after that."

Orlan then looks over at Kamris. "But I was thinkin' yuh could take the first watch for us, while everyone else turns in. Just wake me fer muh turn and I'll take over from there." The dwarf finishes his last mouthful of fish and then walks off to relieve himself somewhere among the bushes. When he returns, he searches through his pack for a bottle of wine to share.

"Here," he announces, "It ain't much, but I picked this up back at Kerrigan's Keep. Seein' as how we survived our first battle together, I figured we'd share a cup. Or, maybe just pass the bottle around since I seem ta have misplaced the cups..." He pops the cork and takes a swig, then hands the bottle to Manfred, automatically assuming the hearty knight would take to the spirits a bit more eagerly than the half-elf and fiery lass.

Sir Manfred admires the bottle as it comes to him for a moment before lifting it up.

"A toast! To all those things for which there is no substitute. Good Wine, Good Friends, and Victory!" he then took an appreciative swollow.
"Very good! A small reminder of civilization in the wilderness. But have no fear Milord Dwarf, if your cousin is anything like you he will certainly live for us to rescue him." He then passed it on to Yintarah.

The night passes without any immediate danger. You do, on occassion, sense that the sky is not completely empty or that there are living things in the river but that is as it should be.
