The manacle is so deeply embedded in the stone that you suspect it was embedded there by magic, ironic since the manacle is designed to prevent the wearer from using magic.

It will not be removable but if you find any wizards or clerics you need to imprison, this is your place.

I think I used my 666th post as Tarren the DM to torture Klyndak. Woohoo. ;-)

There are various pieces of forge equipment in this room but much of it looks like it has been dismantled. Few usable pieces remain in the room.

At one point, it would have contained six working forges, anvils, etc. A stone table with benches sits in this room as well but it is less decorated than the one upstairs. Air is drawn into the room through thin stone vents.

My bad...I thought it was AC to initiate. So much I get confused on.

Rellios continues his search of the room, and also checks out any other exits from the room. Perception 1d20+7=23

We came from the door to the NW, correct? If so - what other choices are there? You said there's a door to the NE. Is there another one SE - opposite the one we entered?

Lost post ...

The room has four doors with the same layout as the layer above. All the doors seem to be unlocked. None appear to be trapped.

There is a large stone table in the room.

The remains of six forges are spaced throughout the room.

The area near the door to the Northeast shows signs of recent travel.

From the door to the Northeast, Rellios can hear sibilant muttering and the sound of hammers.

Here's the room.

Are you trying to say I can't make a new greatsword? GARN!!

"This place is full of the malice of bad blood." Hru says quietly as if speaking any louder might wake more wrathful spirits. "I guess the orcs and the dwarves have something in common after all..." He grips the ancient dwarven hammer tightly in anticipation of the door opening.

Male Dwarf Transmuter 5

"There was those who were after bein' double minded in these 'alls, I'll grant ye that," I say to Hru.

"So are we after seein' what be makin' that noise? I be thinkin' it may be some addled spirit. It is certainly no gobbo."

I wait for Rellios to be opening the door and as he does so, I cast Magic Weapon on my hammer.

As Rellios opens the door a blast of steam bursts from the room forcing you to avert your eyes from the heat. "The chamber is dominated by a large dwarven forge, but unlike the other forges, this one has been maintained in good condition. The air is thick with the smell of melted ore and bright mounds of hot coals cast the room in a hellish light. A small, fiery orange, snakelike creature works feverishly before the forge, first pumping the bellows, then hammering madly on the anvil, then slithering to the far side of the room to douse the glowing rod in a vat of cool water."-- Dungeon Crawl Classics #28 As it slithers rapidly around the room, it hisses what seem like words to itself.

Male Elven Rogue/Fighter (1/1)

Apologies if I am being too nit-picky with the questions that should be obvious, like room setup, etc.

Like a shot, Rellios immediately jumps into the shadows - hoping to scope out the room and assess the serpent's intentions. He'll try to keep to dark corners where the forge's light casts deep shadows.

Male Dwarf Transmuter 5

I spy the creature from my vantage point in the middle of the center room and cry out to it, "'O there! And who are ye to be tendin' ta the forges of the Foe'ammers?"

Having just cast magic weapon as the door was being opened, I proceed to cast shield upon myself (AC 19).

Initiative: (1d20+1=21)

I hope I am not regretting using up a 20 on an initiative roll. :)

You want to roll a fresh perception check for this. You aren't being too nitpicky and I should spell out some stuff but I'll need a perception roll first.

"Wait!" Hru hisses "Maybe I can get him to forge me a new sword! Klyndak wait, maybe I can reason with 'im! I need Gorums favor!!"

Hru moves cautiously forward warhammer and other arm held out to show that I mean no harm. "How much gold do we have?" Hru mutters quietly

Well no diplomacy and no intimidate aren't getting me too far, but just so's I don't approach every problem the same I'll try par-ley (of course you guys just do what you do, and in any event if I distract him maybe it'll prime Rellios for a sneaker) and hell I can always kill him and give that hunk of iron a craft check whilst the forge is still hot!! He may not even speak common! here's a dip chk just in case we don't go to battle immediatly
Diplomacy with the snake smith (1d20=1) Nevermind

Male Dwarf Transmuter 5

You notice I didn't rush him. Stalling seemed a good idea to me whilst I cast some spells. And by all means, he should be looking at us, not the elf-lad jumping about in the shadows.

These shadows are inside the room or outside the room?

It will take me some time to prepare the floor map -- dinner and kids to bed type stuff.

Rellios:

Spoiler:

Rellios notices that the much of the work area of the room is circumscribed by a ring of arcane writing.

The creature does not respond to Klyndak's or Hru's attempt to communicate. Though at Hru's attempt at diplomacy, he may have hissed angrily. He has given no clear indication, however, that he is aware of your presence.

The fiery forge room.

Male Dwarf Transmuter 5

Having now cast both shield and magic weapon, I move closer to the creature, standing just within the doorway.

As it did not answer my attempt to address it in common, I try a different tongue...draconic.

Spoiler:
"Who are you who laborss in the firess of the sstoneborn'ss forgess?"

and if that does not work, I try dwarven,

Spoiler:
"Do you have a name and a lineage, noble workman of the forge?"

Meanwhile, I survey the room for some details.

Male Elven Rogue/Fighter (1/1)

Actually I was hoping to be inside the room's shadows. However, I'll try to stay away from the arcane writing, if possible.

"Klyndak, I'm not sure he's aware of our presence. There's a ring of arcane runes inscribed around him on the floor. It may be keeping him contained and unaware of our presence."

Would it possible to work my way around them at all? See if there's anything else of note in the room?

m Half-orc Cleric/Barbarian 4/1

yup hear you there!

Hru tries once more to get the smith's attention. "sir, SIR!! EXCUSE ME..uh...er...SIR..um...aah...Snakelot! I have come all this way, because legend has it that the finest weapons in the world are made by you, here in this" Hru covers his mouth "a-dwarven-hem, forge. I would like a YOU to make me a greatsword out of that hunk o' metal, you know a greatsword" He gestures "greatsword" with the warhammer and his free hand. " you know SWORD, for gold, I have much gold, mucho goldo....hisssiiissssisis, hisssgoldhisss!"

I lost my first post which was actually funny...but oh well dip ck:diplomacy ck (1d20=3) once again, glad we're not in combat...GARN!!

Looking at the map, I don't see how you could circumfent the arcane ring.

Looking at the map, I don't see how you could circumfent the arcane ring.

The ring folds along the walls at the point where the walls block its path. The only way over the ring would be climbing the walls over it but I don't think Rellios has it in him.

Male Elven Rogue/Fighter (1/1)

***Shrug***

"Do we cross the ring and see what happens? Or do we try another door? I'm no scholar on magics, but it seems to me anything inside a circle is bad news just principle"

Male Dwarf Transmuter 5

DM: Did it respond to either dwarven or draconic?

Rellios: I am tempted to say we should free the poor thing, seeing as how it has probably been trapped for thousands of years and if it attacks us, we wollop it.

"Fair enough...I'm staying out of sight for now. I don't think it's seen me, and I want to be ready to surprise it if it gets ornery."

m Half-orc Cleric/Barbarian 4/1

Heck, I've got nothing to lose

Hru moves forward into the circle inorder to get the as yet unresponsive Li-zardthing to answer. "HEY, bub! Gorum calls me, so ANSWER me now! Garn!! YOU HEAR ME??!!" Hru attempts to intervene in the Snakeoid's work pattern (I'm a Smith so I know where it would be th LEAST annoying) one moe dip ckdiplomacy with a snake (1d20=14) well better but hardly respectable, oh well get ready for CLOBBERIN' TIME

The creature looks at Hru as soon as the circle broke with what you are sure is a grin despite his alien features.

In Common it responds:
"Five hundred years,
the forge I've been stokin'
But now my poor dears,
The circle is broken!
Now that I'm free,
I suddenly yearn,
places to see,
and people to burn!"

With that little poem, it slides across the floor at you picking up a fairly sharp tong on its way.

Sorry, no. It was ignoring you and feigning that it couldn't see or hear you. Sneaky little snake.

Male Dwarf Transmuter 5

As I hear the words of the poem, I grip my warhammer with two hands and even as I see Rellios acting, I charge in, arcane energy bristling along the length of my hammer.

Charging with a magic Warhammer: (1d20+3+2+1=24)
Damage: (1d8+3+1=12)

*grin* Me virtual dice be lovin' me agin!

"Told ya so," Rellios mumbles as he strikes the flame-loving lizard.

Rapier 1d20+2=20 Damage 1d6+2=7
Critical (1d20+2=12) Critical damage - if applicable (1d6+2=3)

Did something happen to our buddy Clareg?

MALE!! Dwarf!! Fighter Level 3

That Desna-lickin' DM be forgettin' about me!

Clareg swings his waraxe missing the salamander and striking a wall. "Ooops. Don't wanna be bringin' the place down now, do we? Heheheh."

Klyndak hits but Rellios fails to penetrate the tough scaly hide.

If I'm missing on a 20, then I'm guessing the magic on that warhammer is the only that's going to help us. :-O

Remember, even with expanded critical threat ranges, it isn't an automatic hit unless it is a natural 20. ... This adventure is full of these high AC villains. With the brute strength of this party, it is the only thing that has challenged you.

OK - apologies if I'm sour graping. I just figured I missed on a 20 (ignoring the critical part, 18 even) and this something trapped inside a binding circle - I(player) am thinking extra-planar and magic weapon bonuses are required.

Also, after having 3/4's of the party comatose, I can't rightly say I feel all that powerful. We seem to be having a penchant for biting off more than we can chew. ;-))

Yes, you did all get beaten down pretty bad when, after pretty much eliminating an entire goblin tribe in the morning, you tried to take on a vampire in the afternoon without stopping to prep for it. ;-)

Male Elven Rogue/Fighter (1/1)

Good point. :-) We should've stopped for tea and crumpets. Good night...insomnia's finally wearing off.

attack: damage (I might not be around for a little while to I did 3 carry on as far as you may without me (1d20+4=14, 1d8+4=12, 1d20+4=22, 1d8+4=8, 1d20+4=16, 1d8+4=8)

Male Dwarf Transmuter 5

"Circle it!" I order my comrades, "Catch it between us! There be fer o' us 'n only one 'o 'im."

In other words, everyone try to flank it in the next round, assuming it doesn't kill us in a single round.

Male Elven Rogue/Fighter (1/1)

Barring a direct attack from the creature...

Rellios will attempt to flank and attack the creature.
Rapier Attack (1d20+2=3) With flanking, then result = 5
Swort Sword Attack (1d20+2=14) With flanking, result = 16

Hru misses his attack with a roar and the creature slithers towards Klyndak with a hiss.

The creature attacks the magically armoured mage with the red hot poker but misses. He then snaps around with his tail but gets it stuck around the foot of the forge. Fumble on the tail slap is going to take his best weapon out for one round.

ROUND 2
Rellios -- acted, missed
Klyndak
Hru -- acted, hit w/ flanking bonus
Creature

Male Dwarf Transmuter 5

"Tell us who was after summonin' ya ta this place," I command the creature as it comes face to face with me.

Flanking, attacking with the magic warhammer: (1d20+3+2+1=14)

I swing my hammer at it, but it moves too fast for me to hit.

The creature doesn't hesitate to stab Klyndak with his fiery poker to punctuate his poem. 7 points of damage.

"The forgesmith be dead,
burnt off his hands,
the right king is missing,
taken out from these lands;
And Foehammer's vanished,
so the regent can't rule,
A new hammer I must forge,
to hand to the fool.
A hammer so perfect,
with narry a flaw,
was demanded of me,
against nature's law.
No weapon is perfect,
but so was I tasked,
and I've smelted and melted.
Why is it you've asked?"

Male Dwarf Transmuter 5

"I just wanted to be knowin' before we killed ye," I grunt as the creature stabs me. Perhaps it is the pain that weakens my swing but my hammer glances off his scaly side.

A swing of the arcanely powered hammer (wit' flankin'): (1d20+3+2+1=16)

"Tis a shame they were expectin' ye ta be livin' up ta the standards of a dwarf!"

Don't forget Clareg.

Clareg fails to live up to the standards of a dwarf, his axe falling shy of the mark.

"I'm a master of smiths!,
My sweet little roast,
I can make any weapon,
I feel free to boast;
But what I was asked,
could not be done,
I cannot make Foehammer,
when there can only be one!
You poor dwarven freak,
To my very critical eye,
Every weapon's unique!
Now, prepare to die!"

ROUND 3
Rellios
Klyndak -- acted, missed
Hru -- acted, missed
Clareg -- acted, missed
Creature

Male Elven Rogue/Fighter (1/1)

When my turn comes round again...

Rellios taunts and attacks the beast,
"There once was an elf from Magnimar
Who traveled to a dwarven castle afar.
When he had to listen some serpent spit
All kinds of ridiculous shit,
He decided to cut out its tongue and shove it in a jar!"

Rapier Attack (1d20+2=11) Flanking would make it: 12
Short Sword Attack (1d20+2=21) Flanking would make it: 22
Critical, if applicable (1d20+2=15)
Sword Damage (1d6+1=7)
Critical Damage (1d6+1=4)- if applicable
Sneak Attack Damage (1d6=2) - if applicable

Serious love the rhyming beastie, in spite of the fact its trying to kill us. Well done, Tarren! My limerick is a poor parody at best.

Male Dwarf Transmuter 5

Flanking is a +2 bonus. :)

"My tongue you be wantin',
Myself you be tauntin',
But the best that you'll get,
is to become my poor pet."

With that the serpent stabs at Klyndak with his poker and slaps Rellios with his fiery tail. 7 points of damage

He is unhurt by Rellios' attack because he's a tough, extraplanar SOB.

ROUND 4
Rellios
Klyndak
Hru
Clareg

Yes, flanking is +2. Still no hit.
