(DM) did I have to pay an extra 25 gp for my sword to make it a holy symbol? I won't have the CLW scroll if I did (not that it's proven necessary thus far)Just in case of prolonged battle...
Would Gorum have taken an ordinary sword out of your hand, thrown it to the bottom of a river right beside wreckage from a twenty-five year old battle site so that you could toast your victory over the batriders with deliciously aged dwarven wine? Sure, the sword will be your holy symbol with the fee waived. It's not like you guys are rolling in treasure...

Klyndak |

I move to the door for a moment and tell the three outside, "We be thinkin' there's trouble a comin'. An ogre perhaps. Why don' the three of ye be scooting back just a bit and me 'n the elf will be stayin' in this room. Then the five of us can be surroundin' it and not worryin' about fightin' over each other."
I don't suppose there are any good hiding places on the bridge? :/

Kannonfodder |

"Scoot back from the ogre, Clareg. Poll the barge while we fight the bats, Clareg. ..." mumbles Clareg as he moves down the stairs.
You wait. Nothing happens.
The bridge is entirely exposed. This was once a fortress. The only design flaw is that the stairs are in a tunnel at the point where they reach the bridge to the spire. If they'd been higher up, invaders from that direction could have been picked off before they even reached the bridge.

Goblin attention spans being what they are ...
Hru, who has scooted back a bit down the stairs and around the spire with the Kannonfodders, hears the footsteps and muttering of a goblin descending towards the room with the portcullis. Klyndak and Rellios, waiting in the workshop, hear it as well.
In goblin:
Where oh where can my dwarf n' elf be,
Oh where oh where could they be,
I got me a knife and big nasty friend
won't you bring back my dinner to me?

Hru Gorumgrag |

*More being quiet, how long will this go on*
Hru once again seems about to burst in anticipation of any forthcoming action
I thought as much (about the Holy symbol) but some Dm's are uptight about where every gold went, I don't consider CLW scroll game breaking and even (as DM) give stuff like that out at 1st (or I did before the PRPG)

Tarren the Dungeon Master |

Clareg, who has little more patience than a goblin, seems about to charge up the stairs around the spire to take on the little freak. Dareg, the older and wiser of the brothers, takes his cue from the half-orc and restrains him. Amongst these three, Hru comes across as the cautious and thoughtful battle leader.
The goblin descends the stair and pokes his head into the workroom where Rellios and Klyndak are hidden. His eyes take a moment to adjust to the change in light ...

Klyndak |

Crossbow attack: (1d20+1=11)
Damage if necessary: (1d10=3)
As the goblin peaks around the corner, I squeeze the trigger on my crossbow.

Tarren the Dungeon Master |

The bolt soars past the goblin and continues on a journey that will culminate in a 200' drop. If it hits something at the end of its travels, you will be too far away to hear the cry.
Rellios and Hru are also able to attack in the surprise round. Standard actions only. The little freak got a 1 on his perception check. hehehe.

Rellios |

Rellios jumps from the shadows and tries to strike the little goblin down...but apparently over estimates his size.
Rapier Attack (1d20=8) Rapier Damage (1d6+2=4)
Short Sword Attack (1d20=3) Short Sword Damage (1d6+1=6)
I'm skeptical I hit if Klyndak missed with an eleven...

Hru Gorumgrag |

Hru charges forward to the fray! "Gorrumm!" he roars as he attempts to separate the goblin.
I'm not sure you can "charge +2", charge (upstirs and all) but it sounded cool. attack, damage attack;damage (1d20+4=16, 2d6+4=9)

'Charge' is a full-round action so this is in the other round. That's okay. You had the initiative in that round. And ... no, I don't think you can charge upstairs.
Hru:
Clareg and Dareg follow Hru on his charge up the stairs reaching and passing the door with the portcullis.
As they go up, a flaming ogre flies down. Literally flies, it seems, for Hru notices that its feet are not touching the ground. The goblin, not expecting the trap to be sprung so soon, grabs on to a leg in squealing desparation.
Hru, Clareg, and Dareg are in its path and the ogre is coming down fast. To your right, is a 200 foot drop.
What do you do, Hru?
Rellios and Klyndak are still in the workshop as far as I'm concerned. I'm going to need 4 new initiative and perception rolls for everyone.

Klyndak |

'Charge' is a full-round action so this is in the other round.
Per the Rules Compendium pg 27: If you're unable to take a full round's worth of actions on your turn, such as during a surprise round, you can charge as a standard action. In this case, you can move up to your speed rather than up to double your speed. All other rules for charging still apply.
OOC: It took me a full half hour of reading when I started my RotRL pbp to make sure I understood the rules for charging during a surprise round using the SRD and even then I was confused. I really, really appreciate the Rules Compendium. :)
I was planning on staying in the room until the ogre charged so its fine with me to still be there when the er,... trap, goes off.

Hru Gorumgrag |

I guess I attack the ogre...I was rushing up at the sound, or sight of the gobbo, so (i mean he's flying for Gorum's sake, it's not like I can trip him) Hru most probably would just continue....and yell alot
Hru continues forward after the goblin, and seeing the ogre he screams "YEESSS!! GORRUUUM!! BLOOD AN SOULS FOR GORUM!!" as he slices at the ogre with all his might!
Strength surge and Destructive Smitestr and dest domain power attack (1d20+5=25, 2d6+5=13) your not gonna believe this but I threaten!!! now it's double the six right...all threats with destructive smite crit!! thank you invisible castle!! that's 19 (I forgot to add an extra 1 damage for str surge) damage right...i don't add the bonus to the multiplier

Tarren the Dungeon Master |

The fact that Hru's great sword has removed a leg from the ogre does not hinder its journey down at all. Clareg dives down but Hru and then Dareg are hit by a weighted mass of burning rotting ogre corpse. The hit has knocked Hru onto his ass, which is not at all harmless when you are on stairs overlooking a 200' drop.
Make an acrobatics save (DC 10) to keep from falling further down the stairs. Make a reflex save to avoid fire damage. ... Dareg is both rolling and burning.
On a brighter note, if you live for the next 10 minutes of game time, you will probably have enough XP to go to second level.

Tarren the Dungeon Master |

Hearing the Half-orc's yell, I peer around the edge of the door as I reload my crossbow.
You see a dwarf tumble by and a half-orc fast approaching. Behind them comes the burning corpse of an ogre on some kind of pulley. A maniacally grinning goblin hangs off the ogre's left leg. The ogre's right leg tumbles slowly behind the party.

Klyndak |

"'Old on lads," I call out, not quite sure what else I can do at the moment to help those falling.
And then assuming that there is still a target available after I reload my crossbow, I take aim and fire at the goblin on the ogre.
Attacking the Goblin: (1d20+1=14)
Damage: (1d10=8)
OOC:I realize that loading the crossbow and firing are two rounds worth of action and merely post them here in order to let you know what I am doing for both rounds, if possible.

Hru Gorumgrag |

Flaming flying ogre-corpse...and I thought I'd seen it all!! lol
acrobatics and reflex:acrobatics;reflex (1d20+1=20, 1d20+2=10)
I may take some fire damage but it beats 20d6 falling damage

20d6? Didn't we discuss the exponential rate increase for falling damage houserule? :-)
Clareg manages to avoid tumbling. Hru manages to avoid tumbling further down the stairs. Dareg is not so fortunate. Acrobatics: 1d20-4=0; 1d20-4=5. He accelerates in his tumbling and reaches desparately for the edge of the stairs but misses. He disappears over the side of the stairs and begins his 200' drop. The goblin, pierced by Klyndak's bolt, slides off the ogre's leg before the ogre reaches the end of its pulley.
The trap designer never considered what would happen when the pulley came full circle. The weighted ogre's body continues moving forward even as its head and neck are hauled back. The head comes off of the rotting, burning corpse with a horrid pop and tumbles over the side while the body skids to a halt on the stairs leaving a streak of blood behind it.
Clareg sees his brother go over the side with a look of horror and then hears the sniggering of two goblins who have come out to watch what, for a goblin, was a work of pure genius. His horror turns to rage as he continues up the stairs.
why is s n i & & e r i n g censored?? ... ahh.. they see a racist slang in the middle!

Rellios |

Sorry I haven't been able to respond quicker since yesterday morning...RL stuff kept me busy the rest of the day
Intiative Rolls (1d20+3=4, 1d20+3=7, 1d20+3=20, 1d20+3=6)
Perception checks (1d20+6=13, 1d20+6=20, 1d20+6=17, 1d20+6=20) (By the way, rolls assume sight or sound checks; anything else subtract (2))

Rellios |

Seeing the laughing goblins, Rellios will try to strike one of them down - assuming he is withing striking range.
Rapier (1d20=2)
Short Sword (1d20=6)
Should I bother with damage?
By the way - burning Ogre corpse trap! Brilliant!
Sending Dareg plummeting to his doom: Boo! Hiss! Boo!

The laughing goblins are higher up the stairs so I think a move action is in order. Let's say you move into melee distance and miss with your attack.
We are in the dungeon crawl proper at this point so I can't claim credit for the burning ogre ... I just moved the trap to the top of a 200' drop instead of a 10' one. ;-)

Tarren the Dungeon Master |

Dear lord, the goblins get a 20 for initiative and then both roll ones for their attacks.
The two goblins are laughing so hard that they can do little more than wave their dogslicers in your general direction.
They will be considered flat-footed due to excessive hillarity until one of them takes damage.

Klyndak |

As I watch my dwarven comrade plummet over the cliff, I feel cold fury washing over me.
"For the 'onor of the dwarves," I bellow and draw forth my warhammer and move up the stairs.
What round are we on? As I understand my moves, on the first round I loaded my crossbow. I fired in the second and in the third I moved and exchanged weapons. Let me know when I can attack.

Rellios |

Rellios takes another shot at the laughing goblins, hoping to avenge Dareg's death.
Rapier (1d20=7) Rapier Damage (1d6+2=8)
Short Sword (1d20=14) Sword Damage (1d6+1=7)

Tarren the Dungeon Master |

Clareg, having no weapon, takes the goblin's dogslicer and pitches it over the edge. "'ey!" He says to the elf "Leave off this one. 'e's mine!"
Rellios kills the other one.
Since I knew this battle was going to have a ton of changes, I've been just playing it by ear but here's what I've been seeing as the rounds:
ROUND 1
-goblin pokes his head in
-Klyndak looses (and loses) a bolt
-Rellios moves into melee and stabs air
-Hru and the Kannonfodders wait bursting with anticipation
ROUND 2
- goblin flees "Ogre, ogre, ogre, ogre. Ready the ogre."
- Hru charges upstairs
- Clareg and Dareg follow
- Klyndak and Rellios move to the door of the room
ROUND 3
- ogre appears
- Hru slices leg off ogre
- ogre bullrushes Hru, Clareg, and Dareg
- Klyndak reloads crossbow and checks out the scene
ROUND 4
- Klyndak attacks goblin
- Dareg flies over edge
- Hru catches himself
ROUND 5
- new goblins appear at top of stairs
- Clareg goes after them -- attacks, drops axe
- Rellios goes after them -- attacks, misses
- goblins roll ones and think it's funny
- Klyndak switches weapons and moves into melee range
ROUND 6
- Clareg disarms a goblin and throws the dogslicer over the edge
-

Klyndak |

(If possible) I move around to the other side of the unarmed goblin (provoking an attack of opportunity, but he is disarmed) and attack with my warhammer from a flanking position.
Attack: (1d20+2=13) +2 for flanking = 15
Damage: (1d8+2=8)
Speaking to them in Goblin I growl, [i] "Stupid goblins. Dwarves will crush your heads and throw you to our dogs!"

Hru Gorumgrag |

Fall for a gobbo trap, waste a crit on a dead ogre, and lead Dareg in a charge to his death...oh the shame!
Hru watches horrified as Dareg pitches over the side, "NOO!!" he cries as he looks over the edge to see if maybe Dareg is somewhere just below, out of sight.
assuming he isn't hanging on Indiana Jones style just below
Yellow eyes wide he backs away from the edge, and hugging the wall follows his companions up the stairs and at the remaining goblins, sword in hand(s).
Also I'm assuming that I can't get a whack in because of the close quarters

Klyndak |

"Get 'old of yerself man," I snap at Clareg, "Dareg would not a want ta see ya actin' this way."
Seeing as how there are no more goblins to fight, I move close to the edge and peer over for any sign that Dareg might have made it.
"Torag take 'im," I intone and then we search the bodies and after we are done with that I say, "'Eave 'em over the edge. Let 'em be followin' Dareg that he might be avin' the pleasure of vanquishin' them in the presence of Torag."

Rellios |

He watches with grim satisfaction as the giggling goblin is silenced by his blade. Rellios helps kick the beast over the edge.
A morbid intensity has come over his face, and he follows Klyndak to the entrance, then says coolly, "Let me go first, see if we have any more surprises waiting for us."
He then slips into the opening like a jungle cat searching for prey.

Tarren the Dungeon Master |

I assume there was nothing on the bodies?
When the bodies have been discarded, I hoist my pack, heft my warhammer and lead the way up the stairs to the open doorway, stopping at the entrance before going in.
I didn't search them. Did you? ... but no. nothing other than goblin made weaponry.
Peaking through the open door into the room the goblins came from you see an oddly made entranceway. This room contains little more than a pile of javelins, rags, parts of the ogre that were deemed to valuable to waste, and crude drawings.
To the left near the front of the room you see a narrow passageway that, if your bearings are correct, would lead to the peephole the goblin guards spied you through. At the back of the room, on the left, is a passage that heads deeper into the spire.

Klyndak |

Perception (1d20+6=8)
Heh. All I can think when I see your numbers is that a goblin with identical rolls to yours would go right past you and neither of you would ever notice the other ;)

Klyndak |

To the left near the front of the room you see a narrow passageway that, if your bearings are correct, would lead to the peephole the goblin guards spied you through. At the back of the room, on the left, is a passage that heads deeper into the spire.
I wave a hand at the elf, trying toindicate that he should examine the passage along the back of the room.
Meanwhile, I take a look down the narrow passage that I assume might lead towards a peephole. My heart is not really in the search though as my thoughts drift back towards our recently fallen comrade.
