You also find a simple leather sachel that displays a strong magical aura.
"Best leave that one be," says Kerrigan a bit alarmed. "Trust me. You don't want that one."

Appraise on the Rod: (1d20+11=28)
Utilizing detect magic, I give the rod a closer look, trying to analyze the weaves of magic around it to discern its function.
That roll should be good for an item with up to CL 13 creation requirement.
Ovirid Thorvirson
Ovirid hefts the light shield, judging its balance, before nodding to himself, setting it down and walking over to the throwing axe. He looks at it closely, examining the workmanship.
Either of those items would be of interest to the dwarven rogue, but I'll wait to see what the others want to do.
"Yer highness, would ye be willin' t' be tellin' me about these fine items?"

There is an aura of great unpredictability and mischief about this object. It appears to be able to cast various spells but you are not at all sure how you would choose the spells or if they can be chosen. When you probe the rod for information about one spell it responds with information about another. It doesn't seem to be intelligent but if it were, its chief characteristic would be mischieviousness.
Sir Manfred VonFalkenburg
Sir Manfred turns to Lord Kerrigan after looking through the treasures.
"My Lord, this heavy steel shield emblazoned with the radient sun calls to me. If I would have any treasure here, this would be it."

"Sure 'n I'll be glad ta be 'elpin'," I say distractedly, but my mind is still largely on the rod I am holding.
Hru Gorumgrag
Hru hefts the chainshirt and approaches Kerrigan.
"M'lord, what manner of spells or prayers lie on yon ancient scrolls?" he asks politely gesturing towards the metal tube.
"I have chosen this shirt, as Gorum has told me it is battle tested and sound, and I humbly thank you for this opportunity. But I have a boon I seek, for I received a terrible wound from an undead parasite. I feel as if part of my soul was devoured by the fell thing and though I am strong with Gorum I have not yet the power to wrest it back from beyond. I've seen it done, I just have not the words, the chants, nor the power to do it at this time. I would gladly give up any claim to the shirt if those scrolls held the prayers of redemtion I seek to make myself whole."
He pulls his sleeve up to reveal a ghastly scar on his forearm that stands out in blue-white contrast to his greenish cast.

"I'm not the one to ask about magic. ... Still ... you're talking about the touch of the grave ... Shouldn't his majesty be able to help you with that? The famed 'King's Ale'."
Kerrigan turns to Klyndak, "Or is that just an 'old dwarves tale'?"

Sir Manfred turns to Lord Kerrigan after looking through the treasures.
"My Lord, this heavy steel shield emblazoned with the radient sun calls to me. If I would have any treasure here, this would be it."
Kerrigan hands the shield to Manfred, punching him lightly on the shoulder as he does. The shield flares brightly when Kerrigan 'attacks' causing Kerrigan to step back and raise a hand up to shield his eyes.
"That seems to work for you, young knight."
Ovirid Thorvirson
Klyndak can't tell Ovirid much about either of the shields other than that they're magical.
Same result, I'm sure, but he was actually perusing the throwing axe and the light shield.
Ovirid stands looking at the two items for a very long time, first at the axe, then at the shield, then back to the axe. After a while, his lose focus and you realize he's looking through the items at something only he can see - a memory, perhaps - before he suddenly straightens up, eyes clear and brow smooth once more.
Taking the light shield to the lord of the keep, he says, "Lord Kerrigan, if'n ye don' mind, Ah would like t' 'ave dis shield 'ere. Per'aps 'nother day, Ah will earn th' right t' purchase yon axe from ye, as well."

"You may well earn it as well someday soon friend," says Kerrigan. "I'll not sell it any time soon. With that traitor Sarpis gone, I haven't the contacts in Kaer Maga to sell it anyhow."

"A shortage of bards is a mixed blessing ... but I remember the legend of 'King's Ale' from my drinking days. An ale that heals all wounds, cures diseases, protects against poisons, lightens the soul, and heals even the touch of undeath itself," smiles Kerrigan. "I also heard it tastes like honey licked off a virgin's breast and leaves you with little or no hangover. ... Perhaps, given the dwarven tendency for exaggeration ..."
Yintarah Fireweaver
Looking over the items Yin does not bother to stop or appraise, she lets her hand fall on the staff and her lips curl into a small smile. "This one feels right" she remarks simply, making her pause for a moment, wondering where the non=excitable replay had come from.
Good luck with the move!

Does Klyndak take the rod of wonder?
The heavy steel shield is emblazoned with radiant sun. When anyone draws close to it, the sun seems to glow. This is a+1 shield, heavy, steel -- blinding 2/day / light on command.
The light steel shield on which is painted a red bird of prey clutching arrows in its talons is a +2 shield, light, steel -- arrow catching.
Does Hru take the +3 chain shirt armor?
The staff carved from a dark red wood is reinforced by strips of brass that crawl up in like flames is a staff of fire (charges 32).

The dwarf nods, "Either way, Ah'm grateful fer yer gift, Lord Kerrigan. 'N As long as yer at peace wit' th' Spires, Ah'm only too 'appy t' lend aid t' th' Keep."
He finds a place to sit and begins to study and polish on his new shield.
Thanks for the stats, Tarren. I'll adjust his character sheet.
EDIT, add the following:
He stops rubbing and looks up at the king, "Yer highness, if'n this is magical, would it be fer 'avin' a word Ah need t' make it work? 'r does it just do what it does?"
Tarren, assuming we can determine the command word for the shield: The description for the arrow catching ability says that a projectile or thrown weapon will be diverted toward the shield unless the base enhancement (that would be the magic, right?) is greater than the base AC bonus of the shield (does that refer to the +1 of a light shield or the +3 of a +2 light shield?). Thought I'd try to get it right in my head before I needed it...

Yep to the rod of wonder. And i will work on leveling here when I get the chance.
Are we switching to the finished rules next month?
I'm not sure when I will get the finished rules. You guys can convert your characters as you acquire them. Hopefully, it won't cause too much confusion.

"Projectiles and thrown weapons that have an enhancement bonus higher than the shield’s base AC bonus are not diverted to the wearer" (BETA, p. 341). This refers to the base AC of +1 for a light shield. The shield you've got has a +2 enhancement on top of the base +1 for a light shield. Against arrows or thrown weapons, the shield gives you an additional +1. ... I never thought of Ovirid as the heroic tank protecting the party by taking all the fire. Might be an interesting role for him.

"Oh. Ah, uh, Ah 'adn't been fer noticin' that quite yet. Per'aps ye might be fer knowin' some'un 'at can be fer readin' Tasselonn? King o' th' Spires?"
What Ovirid doesn't know won't cause him to run away. He's looking for a better shield that he can still bash with. I imagine you might have some fun with describing arrows turning in mid-flight to strike him or his shield.

This is probably fodder for the discussion thread but -it's dodgy at best to find that thing- I'll be out for the 25th to the 31st, feel free to have someone make rolls or what have you....He's not really a complex guy; worship Gorum, kill some stuff, exspouse Gorum for his help in killing stuff, heal, heal combatants, kill more stuff...you get the picture WAIT!! I know someone who can play him!!

Friends,
I am writing this to announce my giving up PbPs. I've just been re-evaluating my hobbies lately, and the amount of time I spend online is, frankly, obscene. So I'm going to be reducing my forum presence, and that includes PbPs.
As for Kelborn, I suspect at this point, he would collect his reward and move on to the next big score. He's not a very devoted fellow after all. Of course, if you'd like to keep him around as an NPC, feel free! :)
I thank you for all the good times. :)

Kerrigan looks around at the selection of items and nods.
"You've saved my Keep from disaster. I trust that you will guard my secret as well as you have guarded my little stronghold," he smiles.
To Yin he adds, "A tour of the city is difficult to arrange. It is mostly buried and the only way to travel it is through the sewers and up the grates into buildings that have not collapsed, such as the one you saw over which my Keep is built. Perhaps someday, if you don't mind the swim."
"Shall we rejoin the festivities?"
Hru Gorumgrag
Hru gazes off into the chamber, wondering what of Gorum's wisdom might be unearthed in such a place, and what destructive mysteries lurk in the depths.
I've never seen a proper temple to the Iron Lord, but many shrines, I wonder if such a thing even existed at any time
He's brought back by everyone's oaths to protect Kerrigan's secret.
"Erm...yes, milord Kerrigan I would not cast lightly away the trust you have placed in us and would reveal this to but one other, as I know so does he...The Knight of Swords and principal of annihilation my Lord Gorum, but he looks with favor upon ye and yours so fear not and be blessed!"
Hru carefully folds the chain shirt and ties it into a neat bundle, securing it with a shred of his simple robes

The party is dying down up above. When Kerrigan re-enters, more than a few guests rise to leave discreetly. Making public drunkenness punishable by flogging tends not to make Kerrigan popular at the tail end of parties, even within his own home.
Falcon Warchild and the innkeeper Sirap Hilltown glance over from their opposite sides of the room and scan your faces. They seem to be in the know.

Ovirid notes their interest, but does not respond. He just makes his way to whatever beverage remains available to obtain one before sitting near Falcon to sip on it thoughtfully.

The spires sounds like the place to be! I'll be away from the computer till next friday (31st)dethatching my brain, rock on! Tarren can assume that I can pick up mundane items (basically my previous equipment) while we're here? I'll get a list but you'll probably be back at the spires by the time I get it together and get back to posting. Some Javelins and my boots and such come to mind, maybe some oil flasks or alchemical fire, writing utensils and ink that sort of thing.

My joust rules:
1. Both riders charge.
2. Attack role as normal for a charge (+2 attack role, with -2 to your AC. Lances do double damage on a charge). Lances break at 15 points of damage.
3. If hit, opponent must make a Ride Check (DC=5+Damage Dealt) to stay mounted. 5 ranks in handle animal = +2 on ride check.
4. If both are dismounted, melee combat follows.
5. If dismounted, Ride Check (DC15) or 1d6 damage.
Player Options:
a.) Aim at helm: -8 to attack but Ride Check = DC15+damage dealt.
b.) Crouch defensively: -4 attack; +2 to AC.
c.) Tighten the reins (reins are held tighter, restricting shield use): = -2 to AC; +4 to ride check.
Any other suggested rules?
