Hey Wolfgang,
Great Module, only one thing bugs me about it. I wish you could have included instructions for including the Derhii as a PC Race. I really love these guys and would be quite excited about using them further.

Any chance you could give us (well I'll admit it's purely for selfish reasons, but hey anyone else can read the post right) the write up on their Racial Stats and Abilities (including ECLs)?

Cheers

There was this thread where the Level Adjustment question came up. There isn't an official answer there, but I tried to give one (and Wolfgang was kind enough to at least not say my answer was junk). *shrug* If I get a chance today, I might try writing the race up in Savage Species format, just because I like them (the race and the format), but we'll see.

However, at least in the other thread there's discussion of the LA (I gave it a +5 LA), and if you are not starting it at a lower level that should be all that you need.

The Exchange Kobold Press

A Savage Species writeup would be a lot of fun. I'm very pleased with how people have responded to the Derhii, but unfortunately I don't have time to create an expanded version of the race today...

If Ken steps into the gap, I think I owe him, like, 24 beers or something.

Oh god, who let Baur out of his cage?! Back to making KQ #4! Back I say!

;)

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Spent the last couple lunches working up something for a monster class. Breaking it down and seeing how the numbers played out as well as comparing it to other monster classes, I decided to lower the LA to +4.

But if anyone is interested, here is what I came up with if anyone is interested. Especially after working on this, I'm itching to play one now. :)

If anyone does actually put this in play, please let me know how it goes. There's been zero playtesting, just some Excel calculations and my own guesses. Enjoy!

(Oh, and it's too bad I don't like beer. But thanks anyway!) :)

Thanks Ken,

I would still really like an "Official" version from Wolfgang (not straight away, I realize you are really busy) sometime in the future. Maybe even for a Pathfinder Bestiary would be really super.

Cheers

Ken,

That's outstanding. Thank you.

Did you intend for d8 or d10 Hit Dice, given they're Magical Beasts?

(I'm surprised that Climb and Move Silently aren't on the list of Class Skills. They're apes, with an "attack with surprise" schtick.)

At 6th and 10th level, the Derhii can select racial feats, and I have a few questions about them.

Knockdown and knockdown cleave. Can a Derhii "knockdown" a character that is already prone? What does it mean to knockdown another flying character?

Since the victim of a knockdown isn't necessarily dead, it would be possible for a Derhii to attack an opponent, knock it down, and then attack it again with the cleaving attack. Do you intend that to be an option?

Another racial feat, basso profundo, refers to "opponents with fewer Hit Dice or levels than you have".

Derhii don't get Hit Dice every level. If a Derhii at 6th Level (4 Hit Dice) were to select basso profundo, should it affect a 5 HD creature?

Thanks.

Probably typo'ed. They should have standard Magical Beast hit dice, and I probably copied it wrong once then never bothered to double check it since I was focused on the other parts. I'll have to fix that and repost it.

I thought about Climb and even Jump. But since they can fly (or at least full adults can fly), then they actually seemed redundant. They could probably be added, especially since with 2+Int skill points and a -2 Int penalty, the average derhii will only get 1 or 2 skill points per level. Not a lot to minmax with. ;)

I'll consider it.

I just took Knockdown straight from the adventure. But I'd say you can't use knockdown on someone who is already prone. As for knocking down another flyer, I'd say they fall 10 feet or something (and if they are 10 feet or less above the ground, they are prone). *shrug*

I would say that, just like regular Cleave, it must be against another opponent. Remember with Cleave they only have to be below 0, not necessarily dead either. So with regular Cleave, you could drop someone to -1hp, and that would trigger your Cleave, but you still couldn't use it on the same target who is lying at your feet bleeding.

My gut says "go by hit dice", but that would probably seriously weaken the power since derhii hit dice don't equal their level, and as you go up in level, equal challenge opponents tend to have higher hit dice.

So, the "clean d20 rule" would be to go by hit dice. That would make the most sense within the overall mechanic framework. However, I bend the rules to maximize fun all the time, and going by HD would nerf the ability. So I'd say go by ECL. Otherwise, you will hardly ever get to use it (and there's a save anyway, and it's only a penalty not disabling the opponent).

Although if there's any Sage Advice or Ask Wizards that deals with this sort of thing, they would overrule me (since Basso Profundo is just Ki Shout).

Thanks for the comments and questions! I'll have to ponder a couple things and update the PDF in the next day or so.

-Ken
