Liberty's Edge

...is very addictive. Anyone else watch this show?

No, but I've heard as much from it's many fans. Unfortunately I have no idea where to find it. Can you update me on the show a bit? What's it about, exactly? I know nothing other than it is a teen melodrama based in england.

Liberty's Edge

It's a high-quality soap (as opposed to the [IMHO] garbage on US Daytime TV), comes on four nights a week in the UK.

There are no teens in the show, and it's not an OC-type show, so I don't know if it appeals to teens or not--in fact, there are only three children, and while the boy recently had a skirmish with the hoodlum side of life, it was a short arc. All of the characters are adults in their twenties to sixties.

The show centers around life in the East London fictional Albert Square in Walford Borough. Centerpieces tend to be the local Pub, a nightclub, a diner, and then jumps between houses and families. Each episode is only about 30 minutes long. It's a complicated series. My wife is visiting family in London right now, so she sends me the show the day after it airs. You can also download it from the BBC website (iPlayer), which provides a nice update to the overall storyline.

I think it probably appeals and is marketed to women, but I really like it. Another great show my wife has me watching is Spooks. It's about a team from MI5. Very gritty and well-made. I'm very happy with the BBC--it's nice to see a non-commercial-oriented production company making topnotch entertainment. I'd say it's taxes well-spent.

The Scottish moors can be a dangerous place...

Eastenders... How I loathe it!

I've never been able to get into soaps. I went through a phase of watching Emerdale as a teenager but thats about it.

Now and then I like to sit and have a coffee with Neighbours -mainly for the kitsch value of its super inoffensive and spineless stories and 'so bland they're endearing characters' but sometimes I have to wonder if the whole thing isn't really some very clever satire and the jokes on us?! Now and then seems to hint of that?

I used to adore 'Prisoner: Cell Block H' as a kid. Good times.

Skins is quite good.

Extras? Hey isn't Ricky Gervais not funny anymore?

Eastenders is also relentlessly depressing. My wife likes Corrie (that's Coronation Street to anyone outside the UK) and while it is mostly idiotic fluff it is at least a much lighter thing to watch (and my wife is from "oop North" too). 'Enders is brilliantly acted but can be very dark - a Christmas special I watched several years ago had Kat (remember her?) reliving her experiences of child abuse at the hands of her uncle (the late Micael Elphick (sp?)), and this was the Christmas special! Four days a week, week in week out, of endless gloom is tough to watch a lot. Though obviously, people do.

Oh, yes! Nothing ever good happens on EastEnders! Every episode ends in someone being miserable! It's a great show to make you feel better about your own life, because no-one's could possibly be worse than theirs!!

Liberty's Edge

I just finished Friday's episode--righteous! I'm thoroughly convinced: all the evil of London is centered at Walford E20. I keep waiting for the episode where a Hellmouth opens up; I just haven't figured out who's basement it would be in...

*shudder* Buffy in Eastenders? C'mon don't ruin a perfectly good show by tainting it with Whedon's presence.. ;-)

It's funny one off the reasons I could never get into easterender was because after watching it for five to ten minutes I would be sat that wishing that a hell mouth or some other kind of horrific apocalypse would be visited upon Albert Square. Never once managed to get in to it. It always just makes me feel inexplicably angry.

Ohh yes an to agree with an Earlier poster Skins is pretty good.

Liberty's Edge

Max's Doom!--this should be one to watch; I can't wait.

Liberty's Edge

I just caught up on the episodes through December 26th, and Christmas was nice and f$@#ed up as usual (except, maybe, for the Beales--that's an odd change-of-pace). 2009's Walford is destined to remain the most dystopian borough in all the civilized world--I wouldn't want it any other way; their melancholy is so deliciously wonderful to watch. >:-}

Liberty's Edge

So...Bradley's dead. Didn't really expect that, but it was a pretty good death.

Did anyone watch E20?

Liberty's Edge

Just watched the 26 March episode; very Tennessee Williams. An impressive performance by both Lacey Turner and Jake Wood.

Liberty's Edge

So... Denise isn't dead after all.

Liberty's Edge

Well, she didn't stay in that basement half as long as I expected, and it was quite something to discover she was literally right next door to her own house the whole time.

Looking forward to Thursday's episode.

Liberty's Edge

Well, it's official (not really): Shirley is the only sensible character nowadays.

Liberty's Edge

I really wish Bianca had stayed in Prison.

I know, I know; I'm the only geek in the world who likes this show.
