So I decided to start up a blog for my group. I think it's going pretty well so far. Granted, I just started working on it yesterday, so it has a long way to go.

We're currently in the middle of dealing with Kracken's Cove in the game. I'm not caught up to that point in the blog yet, but I'll get there.

Anyway, I thought that it might be of some interest to other GMs, so I'll throw you a link if you want to take a look at it.
My Savage Tide Blog

Also, I'll gladly take advice on ways to improve it.

I started on something like this but it quickly got out of hand I was spending to much time on it and I was running out of steam. If you can keep the energy level up though, a blog sounds like a cool idea.

I actually copied to content to a wiki and that has turned out really well. (I published it to Public wiki site. There are a few here: http://www.wikimatrix.org/) Every week a different player (it rotates) adds their version of what happened in character. Like they were writing to the ship's logs.

Being a wiki then the other players kibitz on the original entry and insert their own spin on what happened (scribbling in the margins of the log so to speak), it is quite amusing.

At this point it has become self sustaining, I just keep the formatting consistent, fill in the names of the NPC they meet and upload pictures. They make all the content.

I would rather not link to the wiki here to limit vandalism though... :)

Just thought I'd bump this in case someone else might find it useful in some way or another.

I'm starting to be pretty pleased with it. It's not 100% up to date yet, but it's getting there.

I was just checking out the bog. Pretty cool. It looks like you actually have the players posting messages and interacting a little. That’s better than I’ve seen on other blogs of this kind.

One question: Fire Trolls??

Ah, Fire trolls.

They've been a running joke since the start of the campaign. One of the players made some awful pun and I said, "That's it. Five fire trolls show up and eat you."

I think I meant to say fire giants or something, I don't know. It's been my running joke punishment since day one, though, so I thought it'd be humorous to put them on the blog.

The fun part will be when I really make the group square off against some rival gang that calls themselves "The Fire Trolls" down the road.

Well, we'll think it's funny.

put a flaming troll on the sails of the pirate ships--or create it so that it means to the PCs what jolly roger means to us. My usual bouncer (punishment joke) is a half-dragon troll (black) with potions of fire-resistance *grin* Kudos

You even have STATS for these fire trolls! Yeah, if you don't use them in the game somewhere, it's just a sin or something.

Just thought I'd give this another little bump...

And as for the "Fire Trolls," the group will be facing them this coming week. It seems that they're a group of psycho-assassains who have been "coerced" by Heldrath Kellani to make sure the heroes don't make it to Farshore.

They're loosely based off of the "Tremor Brothers" from Smokin' Aces. Crappy movie, but the Tremor Brothers were great.

Should be one heck of a fight...

Even though I’ve already run this AP, I keep trolling (heh) the boards because there are so many good ideas. I will probably run the AP again incorporating (stealing) many of your (collective) ideas.

This is one of them. I like the idea of more mercenaries going after the party sent by Heldreth. My party took care of Diamondback pretty easily, and to hear nothing form the Kellanis again until her daughter shows up … I always just felt like there should be more. I never saw the movie you are referring to, but I’ll have to check it out now.

Keep us posted on how it goes. If you think it would be relevant, I’d love to see the stats on your “Fire Trolls.” (That’s such a cool name)

Tonight is the big showdown...I'll post tomorrow (or possibly late tonight) with the results and the stats for my "Fire Trolls." I'll put it in a different thread, though, since it's veering from the topic of this one.

So, what happened?

Khartan wrote:
So, what happened?

Well, if you want the full write-up...click the link to the blog. It's the post labeled "One, two, Freddy's coming for you" (link)

The short, short version of the story is that I wanted to make this encounter super-tough so that it would result in a TPK, but not so tough that if they new it was coming, they'd still get slaughtered.

I've been playing Skald as a little extra creepy. He keeps to himself for the most part, but when approached he's always got a bit of eeriness about him. He's been having weird dreams and such. The players even think that he may be cursed.

So Skald has been having these dreams...I threw one in there about the bat idol, volcanoes, etc. Later that night, I had the "Fire Trolls" attack.

It played out exactly as I had hoped. The group put up a valiant effort, but ultimately couldn't match up for the "Fire Trolls." When the last of the group had fallen, I turned to one of the players (the one who's had the most interaction with Skald). I said to him, "You feel a nudge at your side as you awake in the darkness. (His PC is a dwarf, so can see fine.) Skald is standing over you saying, "I had another dream...it was horrible. This band of assassains came and slaughtered everyone...They're coming tonight. I know it."

So, now they now that the fight is coming and can prepare. It will still be a tough fight, but they ought to be able to win this time around. The key will be to limit loss of crew.

It went over really well. They loved the combat, and are excited to get another go at it tonight, knowing what is coming. It's a neat challenge for them to tap into all of their resources to ensure their victory.

That's the short version.

That's incredible. You can only pull that "it was all a dream" thing once and get that kind of effect. Brilliant! I'm sure you don't mind if I steal it?

I'll look forward to the Part 2.

And if you're interested...here's the stats for my "Fire Trolls":
Fire Trolls...you know you want to use them in your campaign!

Fabulous! Thanks so much!

You're welcome!

So we had the showdown (fought them again, for the first time!!!) last night. It was very one-sided. I suppose when you know when and where the enemy is coming...it's changes things considerable. (More than I thought it would.)

The group managed to fight off the "Fire Trolls" quite successfully, not losing any crew at all. (Although Skald came dangerously close to being dead.)

The biggest heroes of the battle ended up being a bunch of summoned celestial giant bees. They swarmed the sorcerer and killed him all on their own. It was rather shocking. Nobody saw that coming...

Another fun battle, but not nearly as tense as the first time around. (Which is to be expected, I suppose.)

The important thing is that Avner survived, so he may continue to be a thorn in the sides of...well...everyone.

Celestial giant bees. Brilliant! First Fire Trolls, now killer bees. That must be a great game!

We're certainly enjoying it...I haven't gotten around to posting the writeup from this week yet, but it includes the words "stinging with celestial fury"...which is just poetry. (I can say this because I did not write it.)

It would also be a good name for a rock band.

Well, "Celestial Fury" would be a good name with the former lead singer of The Police...

One question - if your players get all stroppy after the dream and say things like "that couldn't have happened because ... bla, bla, bla, page 237, bla bla even the dream spell is Touch..." how would you explain it?

A) Divine intervention is the easy option, though rare for 6th level characters, I'm thinking :)

B) Everyone was transported to the plane of Dreams?

or

C) "Shut up and enjoy the story, when you DM you can worry about rules all you like!"

Well, it was a dream described to them by an NPC...so I don't see where any rules actually come into play. It's a dream. But if I had to choose one of your answers, I'd probably lean towards "C."

Carb, it sounds like you don't understand the scenario described in this thread. Tracer has provided a link to his group’s blog (which I highly recommend). Tracer, please correct me if I am the one who is mistaken, but my understanding is that he ran the scenario right through to the death of Skald, at which point he revealed, in game, that it had just been a dream on Skald’s part. Skald then informed the party the details of the dream (the battle they had just played out) and that he believed it to be a prophesy of a real event to occur and when. Then they ran the combat AGAIN, this time having the opportunity to prepare in advance (setting an ambush for the ambushers). It does not seem that there was any point at which there were any dream-like (i.e. rules-ignoring) elements to the first battle. Am I correct, Tracer?

Incidentally, I highly recommend this blog. It is actually quite entertaining reading – more so than any of its kind I’ve ever seen. Tracer doesn’t just recap what occurred at the last session, but he goes into narrative detail on the par of a good adventure story. Plus, it is exceptionally humorous. I feel like it contains many in-jokes that the casual reader wouldn’t understand, but there are still times I’ve laughed out loud. I have become quite an enthusiast of Tracer’s blog.

(EDIT) Oops. It looks as though Tracer responded just before I did. Nevermind.

Correct on all accounts.

I'll have to tell Troy (the player who has done most of the writing) you're enjoying the blog.

Khartan wrote:

And this was Troy's doing...I wrote the first bunch of posts for the blog quickly, trying to catch up to where we were in the game. When Troy took over the writing, he started up the "narrative" style, and it became much more fun (although more time consuming) to write in that style. Part of me wants to go back and rewrite the initial posts, but I think it would just take way too much time. It'd be neat, though, when the campaign is all done to have the entire thing written like a story.

And you could see just how amazing a hero Saris really is (even if only in his own mind.)

Aha - I think I misunderstood .... epically!

I got the idea that Skald somehow sucked them into his dream for that fight rather than telling them about it, that it became a shared hallucination in a way.

Having them do the fight all night, and then saying it was just Skald's dream and that they weren't dead at all - harsh! Or did you warn them first that it was a dream?

And if not, did you give them xp for something that was basically just a story they heard? Still, it was all fun and they'll just have to get used to my fast-and-loose with the rules if the story demands it. The usual DM is very much a proper rules chap, whereas if I want someone to climb over a wall to leave a note, I'm not going to roll in case he falls and dies on the way.... (unless that makes it all much better, of course. Maybe he was ill. Ill you say? But how? :)

Ah, I see. No, it was all just a "story" that Skald told them. They had no idea it was all a dream until it was over. They seemed to be doing pretty well with the battle until the assassain came up from below deck.

They were pretty shocked when I told them it was a dream, but they were very excited to get a second chance at it.

We're not really doing "XP" as written...I've been running it as a very "story-driven" campaign. They level up when it's "appropriate" to the story. The prevents me from having to adjust the pre-made encounters too much.

Still, that doesn't mean that I don't stray from the story, either. If you read that blog, you'll see that Diamondback is still alive, reformed, and pretty much a fifth party member at this point.

All said, it was a very fun encounter...very memorable.

On an AP like this, the “leveling as appropriate” makes a lot of sense. It also means you can add, subtract or substitute encounters as you wish without affecting the projected character advancement. However, have you considered some of the other implications? The most obvious one that come to mind is how do you deal with the XP costs for scrolls and other created magic items? Then, there are higher-level spells that have an XP cost just to cast.

Yeah, I've given that some thought...probably not enough, but some.

In our game, we use the Action Points system from Unearthed Arcana. I think that I'm going to use those to help the costs of crafting/casting/whatever else might come up.

I run a pretty "loose" game. It might not be some people's cup of tea, but who wants tea, anyway? Give me a Mountain Dew, dangit!

Yeah, the "XP-less" system is wondeful for this type of game. I ditched the Flotsam Ooze encounter and the Brotherhood Blockade and replaced it with the Fire Trolls encounter...I'll probably fudge things here or there, too.

It's nice to not have to keep track of XP, especially when there are discrepencies. I prefer to keep everyone on a level playing field. It's just easier for me, which keeps it more fun and less work.

Oh, and back on topic: Some of my favorite moments from your story…

“Shefton and Idae's Excellent Adventure”
The whole thing

“Where There's Smoke There's Fire”
Ornrik and Shefton wait in a pub near the Kellani Manor. Ornrik's patience for Shefton is wearing thin.
"Shh, did you hear that, Shefton?" asks Ornrik.
Shefton's eyes grow wide and he stops speaking as he begins to listen intently for a little too long as Ornrik quietly smiles to himself.

“SSHHH!! I’m sneaking up on you…”
I can just see the thief sneaking in, being seen, but because he is deaf, he can’t hear that he’s being called out to. It’s like a Mr. Bean sketch!! Then the dwarf barging in and almost getting chopped by the deaf thief. Classic slapstick. Oh, as I read though it again, I find myself laughing out loud all over again. This may be my favorite one.

Look, just go and read it for yourself. You’ll be glad you did!

hehehe...it was a sad day for me, as a GM, when Shefton died. He was mighty fun to play. What a dope! The players are all suspicious that he's going to come back undead because they know I liked him too much to just let be eaten by Brissa.

We'll see!

Glad you've been enjoying it. I'm really looking forward to getting these guys to the Ilse...there ought to be plenty o' good stories to come.

Well, the only one I DON’T think it might be is the dwarf (which probably means that’s the one). Vantis, the apparent party leader makes the most sense. The other likely candidate is the rogue, especially since he has had several “solo” adventures. Of course, I don’t know when this main guy is writing or when someone else (yourself?) is writing, either.

I will say this, though. I get the impression that I can tell which players are really getting into the role playing and which ones aren’t. Viselys and Idae (now Adameus, I believe), I would bet, really get into it, while the dwarf and Saris don’t. Am I correct about that?

hehehe...pretty astute. Troy is playing Idae/Adameus. He's doing the bulk of the writing. The last post, though, was written by Saris's player, Chris. The way it usually works is Troy does a big write-up, then I go through and add little tidbits here or there where they are appropriate. Then it gets posted. That's why it's usually several days before it gets updated. We play on tuesday nights.

Again, very astute. Idae/Adameus's player and Visely's player are very much "role" players. They are eating the story up...it's very fun. Ornrik's player is more "combat" inclined. He loves the tactical aspect of the game. I was a little worried that his head might explode trying to plan for the Fire Trolls battle...trying to be prepared for every possible contingency. Saris's player has the roughest schedule and has missed quite a few sessions, as well as having been played by another person for a stretch while he was on vacation...hence the "you just seem different, Saris" line in one of the posts.

Anyway, it's a fun group.

Oh, that’s just bloody brilliant! Yeah, no way for a casual reader to get the “in” jokes, but that’s just beautiful. I wish there was a way you could reprint the blog as a “pop-up video” with those kinds of details. That’s okay, though. It’s great the way it is.

Perhaps I could give extra details of the "pop-up" variety here in this thread. Just little bits of extra info for the "casual readers," of which I thought there'd be none!

You lie. You expected readers simply because you started this thread!

I just hope others will see all the chatter in this thread and take my advice and go check out the blog. It's a fun read for anyone who has been through the STAP and could be very helpful for anyone who is about to run it.

I originally started it because I thought it would be a nice way to keep track of things. When you play once a week for 3-4 hours, it can be hard to keep track of what happened "back when." The blog was started to help manage that. It's quickly become much more, though. What started as a reference tool has now become FUN! So I hope it stays fun, and if other people can find use for it, so much the better.

And you mentioned that one of your players can’t make it much of the time. This is a great way to keep abreast of what’s happened in ones absence. The next best thing to being there, if you will.

Khartan wrote:

True...and it's Saris's player. It's tough getting by without the hero! (I was a player in the Savage Tide a while back, and my PC was much like Saris, so I have a soft spot for him.)

I also like that you have links to handouts and other references that the players could use.

The characters’ stats are listed, which is a mixed blessing. On the one hand, players might want to keep some things about their characters private. On the other, when someone is absent, you have easy access to his character to either substitute or at least see what items he has that the party might use.

The “Fire Troll” thing was very funny. That’s one “in joke” you shared with us and I love that someone actually came up with stats. (Of course, I love your Fire Troll mercenary band, too.) It does distinguish your STAP from any other.

Your “Dramatis Personae” is brilliant. I wish I had one for every game I’ve ever played. Keeping track of names, especially of minor characters, is difficult, at best. There’s nothing worse than saying, “Let’s ask … that priest we met back at the keep – the one the dwarf didn’t like … well ask him to come with us…”

Khartan wrote:

It's nice to have everything in one place.

I'm positive those are outdated. I was going to try to keep that up to date, but it's proved fruitless so far. The PCs are all 6th level now...and those statblocks were from when we were going to convert to the new Pathfinder rules. I'll have to revisit that link.

Yeah, that was just a joke, that spawned into a really cool encounter. Who knows, they may still run across some actual fire trolls at some point. I'm considering incorporating them in at Zotzihila. (or however that's spelled)

That's another thing I need to update. Actually, one of the players volunteered to maintain that. Perhaps I need to remind him this evening.

You said Troy does most of your writing. Do you have all the players involved, or are you doing everything he doesn't? It seems to me that this really should be a player driven thing, for the msot part, with you as chief editor.

As for the character stat thing, now that you are not keeping track of XP, maybe you could just post them when they go up in level. This way, it's not something you'd have to update ever game. In fact, you'd be updating it less and less frequently as the AP progresses.

The players are all welcome to contribute, but Troy pretty much takes care of it. Occasionally life intrudes and he can't get to it, in which case one of the other players or myself will do it, but he usually does a very good job with it. I do, essentially, just a final edit.

I may give them a text-based template and just have them fill it out...then they can just email it to me and I can simply copy/paste it. That's probably the simplest way to keep it up to date.

I told the players last night that we've got a fan on the other side of the pond. They think it's great!

I told them, in a parody of the classic film "Office Space," that in light of every decision that they make for their PC they should ask themselves...

Is this good for the blog?

Hopefully it will spur on even more thrillin' heroics! (A few pretty sweet moments in last night's session. Avner had a shining moment. I'm hoping to get the writeup posted by the end of the week.)

Hmm. I hope just knowing that someone is lurking at the blog won't affect their decisions at the table.

Come to think of it, why do I feel like a voyeur?

Yes, I saw the Avner mention in the Hydra attack post. Jolly good! (That was for you. I don’t actually say that. Nobody I know does, really.)

Well, personally, I hope it does lead them to take more risks and behave boldly. I like high action/adventure...not so much caution. If they all fight to become the "star," it could really spice things up!

hehehe...I did jokingly tell them that they shouldn't be suprised if you showed up for a session...you know, if you're in the neighborhood.

Dude...rock on! (Is that "yank-speak" enough?)
