Damn. This is sad, sad news.
Thank you so much, Gary for the lifelong outlet, friend, and confidant that is this wonderful game. I say without hyperbole that my life would not have been nearly as rich if this wierd little 'game you couldn't fully win' came into my life when I was 8. You have brough me so much fun and hours of burning though, and I cannot thank you enough. You have brought me some life-long friends I wouldn't have made otherwise.
I'll keep passing the torch and others will, too. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I too believe that Gygax is lounging in a padded chair in a luxuriously appointed apartment of the Old City, playing chess with Gord and Mordenkainen, while sipping fine wine from Celene.
Rest in peace, Mister Gygax. You brought many of us countless hours of joy and camaraderie. Your mark has been left on this world, and you will be sorely missed.

I met Gary Gygax on a cold day in Lake Geneva in August 1985, right before the first Gen Con in Milwaukee. Gary brought a skull mug of vodka, and we talked about game writing. It was the first conversation of quite a few I had with Gary, all of which added to my abilities as a game designer.
The list of things-that-would-not-be-true about me if not for Gary is staggering: not this game design career, not this house, not this wife, not this summer convention schedule, not this, not that. Pretty much everybody I work with in the game industry is writing the same list in their heads. That, much more than any printed word, is a legacy that everyone should envy.

The Empty Chair
Eulogy for a Gamer
There is an empty chair at the table this day,
A hallowed place where a friend once played.
The roll of his dice my ears long to hear.
Or perhaps it would suffice if he should suddenly appear,
With character sheet in hand, and a bag of Cheeze-doodles to share.
All his friends would stand, as he sat in the empty chair.
I hear his voice a-callin’, and it ties my heart in a knot.
For he cries, “Though a comrade has fallen, you must play for those who cannot.”
We conquered worlds on the run, he and I in the name of fun.
And as others may come and go, I make both friend and foe.
But what I long for most is our past, now long a ghost.

This is really sad news. Not only has D&D given me decades of tremendous fun, but I have met many very good friends through the hobby who I would otherwise never have known. Gary gave us not just a cracking game, but an incredible shared experience in the form of many of the earliest adventures and supplements. When gamers meet, drink beer and swap war stories about the infamous Caves of Chaos or the unforgetable Temple of Elemental Evil they do so because of him.
I'll sorely miss him.

Mr. Gygax
With you a part of me hath passed away; For in the peopled forest of my mind, A tree made leafless by this wintry wind, Shall never don again its green array. (By George Santayana)
I want to thank you for the things you have started. Inside jokes, staying up late with friends, long time friendships, finally feeling somewhere to belong. You made many lives more fulfilling and I thank you again for that.
May You Continue to Find Adventure

Oh all the money that e'er I had, I spent it in good company
And of all the harm that ever I've done alas it was to none but me
And all I've done for want of wit to memory now I can't recall
So fill to me my parting glass, good night and joy be with you all
Of all the comrades that ever I had, I'm sorry for my going away
And of all the sweethearts that ever I had, I wish you one more day to stay
But since it falls unto my lot that I should rise and you should not
I gently rise and I softly call, good night and joy be with you all
Oh if I had money enough to spend and leisure time to sit a while
Well there is a fair maid in this town who solely holds my heart beguiled
Her rosy cheeks and ruby lips, by own she holds my heart enthralled
So fill to me my parting glass, good night and joy be with you all

"Remember the clear light, the pure clear white light from which everything in the universe comes, to which everything in the universe returns; the original nature of your own mind. The natural state of the universe unmanifest. Let go into the clear light, trust it, merge with it. It is your own true nature, it is home."- Tibetan Book of the Dead

I don't think I realized how much I took it for granted that this was a hobby whose founders were still with us and active until I heard the news of Gygax's passing this morning. I never followed Gygax to any of his post-D&D projects, but still, it feels more like the end of an era than the mere loss of one man.
Farewell, Gary. I'll come up with a memorial anagram for you for my game.

I have a feeling that this loss may take some time for me to fully process. Right now I'm not even sure how to react. But I must say Erik Mona expressed our loss very beautifully. It truly brought a tear to my eye.
Thanks Gary, for the countless memories.

I've just recently started running a D&D game, for the first time in well over a decade (running RotRL, natch), largely for the purpose of teaching my best friend's 12 year old child to play, as she has been dying to try the game since she was about 9m so suffice it to say, EGG's influence will continue to be felt for generations to come.
My players this weekend will all be playing with black dice.

I have posted up in many places I haunt about this sad day. I have scoured the internet looking for info on his passing. It strikes me as something truly grand that so many people from so many different walks of life are speaking out about the profound impact that one man, Gary Gygax, had on their life. From Forbes to Salon.com people are coming out and announcing their their gratitude to him for the endless hours of enjoyment the got from our game, D&D.
I too am grateful for the friends I have made across the gaming table, the words I learned to spell (I have dyslexia) that I would have never had the motivation to do so, and fun.
Rest In Peace Gary,

I'm so glad I got the opportunity to thank you in person last year at Gen-Con. I hope that you are off on your greatest adventure now. I've got two gaming sessions coming up this week, one of which will take place, apropriately enough, in your creation, the free city of Greyhawk. We will raise glasses in your honor. Godspeed Gary!

~reads a post by someone over at another forum~
"This was something that Gary had to do.
It was in preparation for the release of 4th edition, so he can roll over in his grave.
Just kidding. RIP Gary."
~grins and laughs~ I know he would have liked that joke. You will be missed, oh great DM in the sky!
