STAP Minis and Models

Savage Tide Adventure Path

Hey all,

I was curious what success people have had in finding appropriate miniatures and models for use in Savage Tide. I saw the "Ravaged Pride" here on Paizo, and would purchase it (even though the reviews are somewhat disappointing) but it has been on backorder for quite some time now. Has anyone found an appropriate model for the Sea Wyvern elsewhere?

Also, I started going through the adventure path, noting all of the monsters and I'd like to purchase as many of the actual D&D minis as I can so we have minis that match the encounters pretty well (I realize this could get somewhat expensive).

Anyway, I was just curious how other people handled these things and if they had any suggestions.

Thanks!

Hey Jowco, I'm the one that wrote that review, and to be honest you could spend your gaming dollars on a lot worse then the ravaged pride. I'm not disappointed in my purchase. It's not a bad product, but I feel that they could have done far better, and it's possible that they might already have a better product on their web site.

check this out for example: Flip mat

Also do a quick search of these forms, Tatterdemalion drew up a wonderful deck plan and posted it Here

Hope that helps.

I'll be using the Maiden of the High Seas.

Probably not the right size for the Wyvern but too cool not to use!

I have a crested Felldrake for guttugger in LD hideout.

bullywugs and lizardfolk

I used a Treant for the Mother of All

Fiendish T-Rexs

Nightwalkers for later in the stap

the big blue behir will sub in for the mashers

I will use the Bulette on a larger foam base for Emraag

there are gargoyle, harpy, succubus (and several other demons available), Large and Huge giants.

an aspect of demogorgon

a Deathknight mini

I even had a little kobold mini for Churtle.

wish I had more of the demon ones

Cheers!

Have World Works still in business I'm getting nothing at their URL any more?

Looks like their front page isn't working. You can get to the rest of it via cached google pages: LINK

(Thanks to Bacris on enworld for the tip)

From experience, my highest recommendation is for:

Pirateology model Ship (Swiftbuck)
(here's a picture of it assembled)
This model is perfect for miniatures. Plus it's cheap ($7), sturdy, light, and easy to assemble. Note: I left the lower sails off my own model to make it easy to move miniatures around the deck. I also drew a grid directly on the deck.

Other good models that I've used:
Brown Best-Lock ship
Black Best-Lock ship
Mega Bloks Flying Dutchman
Klutz Pirate ship building cards
Mega Bloks Vorgan Ice Fang Ship
Mega Bloks Empress
Weapons and Warriors pirate ship

If you can provide a list of the monsters, I can provide a list of miniatures for them. I started at HTBM, and I've had to be pretty creative with Dreamblade an Mageknight miniatures (among other things). However, singles can often be obtained fairly cheaply (I can provide a list of online stores if desired).

I recommend miniaturemarket.com as a good place to pick up reasonably priced singles for minis for the campaign. I ordered a lot of minis from them over the past year to use in this campaign and so far have done pretty well. Some critters have been hard to get good minis for. My purple worm mini has come in really handy- mother of all, mashers, Bilewretch, Xeramat, and a number of other things that I can't remember off hand. The kopru have been tough to get minis that have a good resemblance. I picked up a few Quori minis from Eberron setting that are in the Unhallowed set, to stand in for kopru behemoths and they do a good job. I've tried to stalk up on demons. I have a pair of mariliths, a balor, glabrezu, pair of hezrou, couple of bar igura from the new set, a pair chasme, a vrock, succubi, a couple of babau, demonic lasher (demo gorgon from Reaper) etc... All those nasties have served me well. I picked up some plastic dinosaurs from Toys r us, and got some use out of them in Here there be monsters and Tides of Dread. I have had trouble finding things to make good skinwalkers or Olman warriors.
I'm also struggling to get minis for some of the huge sized demons later in the campaign.

So far I've had pretty good minis for most of the things I've used. Its going to be annoying not to have a good huge sized demogorgon mini for the end of the campaign.

Didn't miniaturemarket.com go under? Do you have a link?

Are you being serious?

Thanks Matthew, I was being serious, a few of the miniature sites I used to visit went under in the last two years, and I could have sworn that miniaturemarket was one of them. I even did a quick google search and didn't see it. I guess the site was down (or my computer was having connectivity issues) when I tried to connect this morning. So naturally when I couldn't connect and I didn't see a front page with a google search I just assumed the worst. Everything is working fine now though . . . odd.

Bebilith: Starwars Acklay (which is even on an actual WotC Huge base)

Retriever: Acklay or huge spider
Nalfeshnee: King Kong (huge) or Haunter of the Pits (gargantuan) action figure with wings glued on (taken from feathery bird figures available in craft stores)

note: these are not just ideas... these are what I've been using. I do most of my modifications with a knife and a hot glue gun (both from the $1 store), and 3" disks wooden (for huge bases) can be found in most craft stores.

I'll be using a 6" tall Iskar action figure, but replacing the head with two mandrill heads (from plastic animals figures) and replacing the arms with toy octopus arms.

The base figure is only $1 here

Dark Archive

For Vanthus I recommend the Ascendant Hellsword from the first Dungeons of Dread preview on WotC. You can see said miniature here...

http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/mi/20080131b

There is also the Barl-grua mini from Deserts of Desolation for Olangru and his mates. The Ascendant Hellsword would also work well for Cold Captain Whyther. For Khala there is a reaper mini that is their equivalent for Demo that is pretty good, although I think the aspect of demo figure from archfiends is better for Khala as it has a more "scaly" appearance than the reaper version. For Orcus they are doing a gargantuan "legends" figure due out in march that is pretty good. For Iggwilv I would look at the Elf Warmage from D&D minis or something similar.

I will post again if I can think of anything else.
