For those that don't know, White Wolf and CCP (The Makers of Eve Online) Teamed up a while back. One of the things that is coming out of that team up is a new MMO based on the World of Darkness!

No details Have been released yet.. But I am extremely excited!! The World of Darkness has always been my Favorite RPG.

By the way... this is old news..but since there really has not been an official announcement and only a call for Developers it is hard to find.

Grand Lodge

That sounds fun. I'm curious to see what that's going to look like.

I sensed this in the Force when the company buy occurred...Excellent. :D

Well since development just started.. it will be a few years down the road.

Dark Archive

I'm a little dubious about it being made by the makers of Eve, but the World of Darkness setting is just amazingly chock full of cool character concepts.

Unfortunately, they'll probably set it in the 'new' World of Darkness, which, IMO, has half the flavor and is 75% less filling. I don't cotton to any 'World of Darkness' that doesn't have Sons of Ether or Followers of Set in it!

And by "teamed up" don't you mean "when CCP bought White Wolf?"

;)

True that... but I never saw that as a bad thing...

I was very happy when that happened.

I was neutral, but I saw it as a better buyout than Hasbro buying WotC. At least it's a game company buying a game company, in this case, like when WotC bought TSR.

I have heard many good things about EVE Online.. and I was really hoping for a MMO based of WoD, so I thought this was a good fit..

But I also thought...

Good, atleast is was not Hasbro or Atari that bought them out *My 2 least favorite companies at this point in time*

Dark Archive

I'm still on pins and needles waiting to see what Cryptic manages to make of a Marvel comics-based MMORPG. I'm a big fan of City of Heroes / Villains, but they could really, really mess this up, if they aren't careful.

So many MMORPGs out there I'd like to at least try, and me without the power to summon endless duplicates of myself...

Liberty's Edge

It will be interesting to see if they do "New" WoD (likely), "Old" WoD (unlikely), or Monte Cook's WoD (HIGHLY unlikely, but the version I'd most want to play in).

Nothing on this Earth would make me more happy than a well-executed WoD MMO.

I have a lot of faith in CCP and White Wolf and know that the MATERIAL will be some of the most incredible stuff to ever grace the genre.

I also know, however, that I will inevitably encounter characters named 'Bludsucka' and 'Fangz.' Sometimes, MMOs make my eyes bleed.

I'm not sure if WoD lends itself well to an MMO, but if they catch the atmosphere well, it could be fantastic.

So I got my hands on a..'Document' Describing CCPs Buisness in great detail and its plan for the future, dated July 2008.

World Of Darkness, though it does not go into great detail of the video game itself, is all over the document.

At the time of this document the developers for the game were using the same technologies used on Eve-Online. They estimate the potential Subscriber base to be 2-3 times that of Eve-Online *Which I think is ambitious*. They had a planned release date of 2010 *no Month mentioned*, but that date can and most likely will slip.

No other details of the MMO for WoD where mentioned in the document.

*Edit: The comment 'but that date can and most likely will slip' Is all me... The document does not say that.

Interesting, most interesting.

IF they capture the atmosphere of the setting, and provide for a large feel - not just ONE city with a few parks, WoD is going to have to be ambitious in scope. Fortunately, they have a LOT to work with, since WoD has been around a healthy amount of time.

It will be VERY VERY interesting if they decide to host WoD on a single shared world as is the case with EVE Online. I rather like it, but if they make a hash of it ... well, let us hope they have spare servers available as a back up measure...

Well most games I have played/ran, the whole story was all in one city... So I will not find it unusual if the MMO was to..

True - but one story will not keep a player busy for terribly long I expect.

you can have multiple stories in one city..

I am curious weather they will make a fictional city.. or use a Large city from RL.

too small... you will need a city New York size...

that would be a MAJOR!!!! dramatic license..

Greater Reyjavik population 200,000
Greater New York Population 20,000,000

though most likely they will not really go into the human vs Vampire population guidelines in the MMO.. Too many players..

Pshaw, details, shmetails ... ^_^ Just having fun :)

There are a large number of cities viable for it though, and it doesn't HAVE to be a U.S. city, either - as suggested above - a fabricated one or any major city. I'd probably be MORE interested in a major European city as the back setting, then having fun driving the wrong way down the road and getting fragged for cultural screw ups.

But hey, we'll see I suppose. :)

Aren't there millions of subhuman 'cattle' in the tunnels of the Reykjavik Underdark? I remember one escaped recently but no-one believed his story.

Wonder what happened to him?

<googlegoogle>

Ah, that's ... odd, he fell into a volcano ... at midnight.

:-)

Strange how the cattle wind up dead, eh?

Anyone know if this project still lives?

Grand Lodge

Its still in heavy production. Look for yotube videos of this years EVE fanfest where the dev's discuss the game and why they were delayed. They've been tight on releasing info but the general gist is it'll be all vampires at first, witht he other denizens later on. Theres permadeath if a Prince calls a bloodhunt on you, and Princes are elected by other players.

Sounds like it's turning out really cool. Might be an MMO that I can actually get into! Thanks Maccabee.

After persistent rumours of the game having been cancelled, I read a recent (recent as in early 2012) interview with CCP' CMO claiming that they have a staff of sixty people working on the game. So, I guess they are giving it some pretty serious attention these days.

Grand Lodge

The first actual look at the game will probably be Q1 2013.

Dragnmoon's powers of prognostication are well-documented!

The 2010 ETA was prior to Monaclegate as I recall. Very nearly the entire Atlanta office was sacked as a result.

I’m very interested in this and I’m looking forward to its release. Unfortunately it’s still in development and will be out in 2015… maybe.

This is a very tricky genre to do with an MMO since typically there are few vampires and supernaturals running around. And the trappings of MMOs will quickly break immersion (I can already see names like Edward, Bella, Jacob, and Count Chocula being used).

I’ll play as a vampire, but I’m honestly much more interested in playing as a werewolf, hopefully with the “Werewolf Apocolypse” rules (the new WoD sucks, why did they change it?)

I think CCP will get it right though, they’ve had tremendous success with Eve Online (even though I’ve never played it). If it doesn’t get cancelled.

It's going to be Roleplay heavy i bet.

As long as you consider throwing cars around roleplaying :P

Sovereign Court

Yeah, because that is the crux of the world of darkness. Ridiculously ripped supernaturals flinging cars at each others...

And hiding katans under trenchcoats. Don't forget katanas!

Sovereign Court

Sorry. Forgot.

And juggling dumpsters and outrunning the 8:15 from Sacramento.

I love that sentence.

Grand Lodge

They've pulled so much manpower off WoD to work on EVE I've stopped caring anymore. The information coming out is so sparse and the team so small that 2015 is highly unlikely.

Stable and working MMO that gives a steady stream of revenue is better (for CCP) than hoping for a success of a game based on a setting that would be more suitable for a MUD than anything resembling typical MMORPG.

Sovereign Court

MUD?

I'm very impressed with the technology and tools they've created to build this game.

I watched the entire EVEfest 2013, and they've had lots of sandbox play between employees, even 2 years ago.

I think this game will be out in late 2014 or early 2015, or it's not coming out at all. And if it's not coming out at all, that will probably be announced this May at their EVEfest.

At some point I think they also need to be open to other public capital helping them with funding, once their tools are done. That or 3rd party companies/fans that create stuff in game using their tools.

I disagree that it's better to focus on EVE than to branch out to the vampire genre. Every good company needs more than one product and needs to look to the future. EVE will not last forever, eventually they will need to make an EVE 2 or another product.

Also, if they do the mechanics right, a vampire MMO could be great. But yeah, they're going to need to be innovative and it can't be like other MMOs.

While I'm excited about the prospect of a World of Darkness video game, I find the choice to implement it as a MMO game very dubious. The kind of short attention span gaming encouraged by MMOs just doesn't fit the setting, I feel. The gameplay of MMO includes things like farming, collecting and trading loot, and other kinds of grinding. That's not what playing in WoD is about, for me at least.
