Greedy players question (spoilers!)

Rise of the Runelords

Spoiler:

My players agonized over whether or not to sell the skinsaw cultists masks. Clearly evil items. Greed eventually overcame them and they sold them. I even described some gaunt sinister man in dark dingy robes who made the purchase. :)

One of my players asked me if there was any talk on the forums about other groups dealing with this. Did other groups sell the masks or destroy them?

Well, my players haven't made it that far, but there have been a couple things mentioned that I've seen and intend to use.

Spoiler:
The party could sell the skinsaw masks to a good-aligned church to either consecrate or destroy, or to a church of magic, university or the Pathfinders for study. That way, the players can make a profit and eat it too. Or something like that.

Apropos of nothing, but I've also decided to explain where the masks came from, via tying "Hook Mountain Massacre" a little closer to "Skinsaw Murders". Justice Ironbriar's jurisdiction includes the remote outpost of Turtleback Ferry, and he's been turning a blind eye to Graul activities, and even making Mammy an honorary member of the Skinsaw Men, in exchange for her using her Craft Wondrous Item feat to make all those skinsaw masks.

Our PCs burned them, except for Aldern's (a long story). This particular player blows away more treasure than anyone I've ever met: either he burns it, or he keeps it rather than cashing it in. The PCs have a rule that they never sell anything Thassilonian, which is really hurting their budget. They won't even spend Thassilonian currency....the groans when I described the dragon-hoard as "a mix of every currency from Thassilon onwards" were heartfelt, because now they have to *sort* 300,000 coins. Heh.

A canny party might make the GM's head hurt by selling the masks and then tracing them (Locate Object) in hopes of finding more of the cult. My player is considering that with the giantish weapons taken in Sandpoint: so, who supplies weapons to giants around here?

The locate object cult flushing idea is pretty good. You have to wonder how careful the cult members would be if they saw the masks for sale. A smart cultist would intimidate/charm a catspaw to purchase the mask for its "artistic merit" and then steal the mask from them, thereby avoiding the suspicion that might come from directly purchasing the mask.

I'm sure the giants make all their own weapons. Most of them are running around with relatively simple weapons like clubs and maybe hammers. And there's the guy with a Pick for the x4 crit, which is just mean.

Used "catspaw" in a sentence for the Win!

Disenchant them for Strange Dust, maybe lesser magic essences. Thats what I do with all my eronious magical items.

In that vein, sacrifice them on altars to your diety-of-choice in exchange for favor with 'the boss' that you can cash in for miracles and blessings. :)

Or, less sarcastically, do exactly that. Turn 'em over to a good temple in exchange for future healing services. Raise Dead ain't cheap. Best to start socking away for it early.
