It would.

With Nulonga coming up pretty soon, another question : Do I guess right that Nulonga would have to leave his body just prior to being stunned in order to prevent being trapped in it, if killed while stunned and hence unable to act ?

Nulonga's ability to leave his body to inhabit another dead body is something he can trigger as an immediate action, so technically, he WOULD be able to avoid imprisonment if he can take that action as he's being imprisoned. That goes for being stunned; he can trigger his death wish an instant before the stun occurs to kill his body.

It should be VERY difficult to prevent Nulonga's death wish from occurring. The only way to really kill him for good is to kill him when there aren't any suitable corpses within a mile; note that Wat Dagon is its own demiplane, and therefore you only have to ensure there are no corpses in the building in order to kill him forever there.

My recommendation is to allow Nulonga to trigger his death wish more or less at any point where you as the GM realize that he's doomed; if he gets stunned on round one and the PCs are going to be able to do anything they want to him for a round or more, that's effectively the same as being killed so he should just die there and then and pop into a new corpse.

The Exchange

So.

I was re-reading Solomon Kane last night, and I figured out where I'd heard Nulonga's name before.

Does anyone have stats for the Puritan swordsman? There's an awesome NPC for the players' paths to cross.

thanks, the problem is, this might effetively neutralize him, since my group has two fast close-combat characters with "stun for 1 round" melee options which will be hard to save against for him. Their reload times don't matter much under these circumstances, unfortunately... They don't care about Displacement much either..

Seems I will have to take Nulonga to the workshop for some re-tooling then..

Remember too that once Nulonga goes undead, stunning attacks won't have any affect on him anyway, so if he DOES face tactics like this, switching to an undead body's a sound tactic.

not much of an option - my players, knowing me (there was a necromancy-themed camapign some years back...*guilty grin*), always take care to decapitate and usually incinerate each and every coprse they leave in their wake, too.

The reserve feats from Complete Mage have been taken explicitly for this pupose ( I mean, who is not rather immune to fire effects in the Abyss and at high levels to boot ?), do I have to say more ?

Undead would not be an optimum body choice anyway, sacred weaponry becoming more and more popular hereabouts - combined with "pounce" and a full attack sequence... we are probably talking smoking mince-meat

Well...

Spoiler:
... that's why I made sure that there was a corpse in the "last room" for Nulonga to possess. He can hop into Vanthus's body even if the PCs have destroyed every corpse in their wake. And if the PCs have already GONE to the room with Vanthus's body, they'll basically trigger the final encounter anyway, in which case Nulonga becomes incidental.

That all said, it sounds like your party is tougher than normal, especially if they have open access to all of the additional WotC books. In this case, you should absolutely rework/rebuild Nulonga (and the other key NPCs as well), giving them access to the same books and options.

hehe, duly noted... I will use the next two adventures to take the measures of the guys' tactics, but currently they are ripping through ItM's "Divided Ire" like the Tarrasque on Amphetamines which makes me blanch at times.

In a way, I love it but with their current tactics, Nulonga will be not all that much more to them than a recurring speedbump.
Which, given his creepiness, that would be an absolute shame.

10 XP for Mr. Austin.

I also have a party that is tougher than normal due to party size and books allowed. I haven't rebuilt any of the NPCs yet but I think I'll need to soon. If anyone that plans to rebuild some key NPCs and wouldn't mind sharing I think it would make a great thread for those behind them in the AP. Then they could all be in the same spot for easy reference.

Another idea would be to start a best of the best (BoB) thread. When I ran RttToEE there was a message board on Monte Cook's site (still there too) where DMs would share information much like this board. If anyone posted something really noteworthy anyone else could suggest that it be posted on the BoB thread. If others agreed the informational parts of the thread would be posted there. The link below will give you an example of how the thread turned out.

Go to RttToEE BoB Thread

Most of the stuff posted involved tactics during battles, actions of key NPCs, etc. It was really a great thread and helped all of the DMs involved run a better campaign. Perhaps the same could work here.
