You have a move action left this turn, yes? Do you want to take it now, or deliberately wait for the next round?

Either way:

Goblin AoO on Mitnal (1d20+3=5)

You move past him too fast for his swing to connect.

As for a description of the battlefield --

Here, wait. I can do you one better:

Mitnal ignores the goblin in front of him and dashes towards Gengar as soon as he hears Jessa's warning. He checks on his ally's condition and does anything he can to help him.

As the effects of his bless wash over the sheriff and the halfling, Kinmorn readies himself and once more takes stock of the fight, trying to determine whether to charge in with spear or, gulp, try to use his bow.

Well, Shantare just skewered her goblin, so you only have two goblins left to hypnotize -- yours and Mitnal's -- and neither of them make their saves....They'll be fascinated for 5 rounds

OOC: Yaay! My first successful area effect spell! I don't use hypnotism all that often, so I'm unsure if I completely understand the effects. It doesn't appear that the spell requires concentration or that I continue my gestures and droning incantation in order to maintain their fascination. It takes a full round to cast it, and after that, they're fascinated if they fail their save for a period of time (2d4 rounds, or in this case, 5 rounds). It also says I can make a single request of the affected creatures...provided I can communicate with them...and since I'm the only party member who apparently took Goblin as a language, that's a good thing. So, with that in mind, here's Jessa's next action...

Noting the blank expressions on the goblins' faces, Jessa relaxes, slightly relieved that the immediate threat has diminished. Out of the corner of her eye, she can see that Mitnal is checking on Gengar...and that Shantare seems unharmed. 'But what to do about these goblins?' she wonders, already knowing the effect won't last forever...but while it does, perhaps she can suggest a different course of action through her enchantment.

Speaking in goblin again, Jessa addresses her victims, "When you awaken, you must leave this place as fast as you can and don't stop and don't look back, because there's danger all around you...dogs and horses and men with spears! Flee and always fear this place!"

Once she finishes implanting those hypnotic instructions, Jessa joins Mitnal next to Gengar. Her expression softens as she sees his wounds. And Blackwing hops onto her shoulder as she kneels next to the fallen dwarf, peering down at him as well. She looks at Mitnal, lacking any skills in the healing arts and asks sadly, "Is...is he gone? Maybe we should find Kinmorn? He's a priest and a healer, right?"

"The dwarf lives. I will carry him to the priest," says Mitnal handing his warhammer and Klar to Jessa. He shoots an evil look at the hypnotized goblins and says: "A snake is always a snake even when it wags like a tail."

He looks at the stage where he last saw Kinmorn and begins heading in that direction with the dwarf in his arms.

Gengar doesn't feel anything. He's not even sure how long nothing has dominated his existence.

Then, somewhere far away, a dim smell or maybe it's a throbbing color becomes noticeable. To accept the fact there is more than nothing is to accept a tide of softly surging pain. Pressure and weight, form and presence. I am not dead the dwarf realizes.

I wish the world would stop rocking so much and let me sleep, he thinks.

An explosion of pain ignites his brain as he mistakenly tries to open his eyes. Before agony claims his consciousness once again he sees the world on fire and that big basketweaver so close...

Spot careens around the corner, barking madly. Ruano bellows an Outrider war-cry, directing Spot to the rescue of the outnumbered sheriff.

Spot snaps and snarls, but ultimately grabs nothing but air. Ruano takes a swing at a goblin noggin as he leaps from the saddle.

Fight with the Warchanter

Ruano, despite how it looks in the sketch, you can get the flanking bonus on those attacks with Spot's charge, which will put you both in slightly different positions that I drew, but the sketch is just for general reference. That said, Spot still doesn't hit, but you do. The goblin turns to fend off Spot's charge, leaving him open for a crack on the skull from you.

The sheriff takes advantage of your arrival to cut down the goblin to his left, felling it with one blow, and leaving the goblin in front of him, and the one you and he now flank, plus the goblins in the rear.

As you both make your way across the rapidly emptying square, you catch sight of the priest who was about to speak when the attack started running toward you. He examines Gengar's wounds and gives voice to what Mitnal already knows.

"He'll live. I can help him a little, but there are others who may need my help more." He whispers a quick prayer, and the dwarf's wounds lessen somewhat, enough to rouse him to consciousness.

Father Zantus cast cure minor wounds healing 1 hp, and putting Gengar at zero I believe.

Shantare:

After you run your goblin through, you make your way over to where Mitnal and Jessa are kneeling over Gengar. Mitnal picks up the dwarf in his arms and begins carrying him over toward the speaker's platform. Jessa follows after him. They leave behind them two goblins staring blankly at where Jessa was once standing, though they seem to be coming out of it.

Charging a goblin with a longspear (blessed): (1d20+1+2+1=20)
Damage from Longspear: (1d8+1=7)

Kinmorn, deciding to whittle down the goblin numbers before attempting anything with his bow, lowers his longspear and charges at the goblin that the halfling and his dog are fighting. With his spears reach, he thrust past Ruano to skewer the goblin.

"Thank you, Father," Jessa replies, "We're trying to find Kinmorn. Do you know where he's gone?" Her arms ache under the heavy load of Mitnal's warhammer and klar, but at least they're not as heavy as Gengar. She looks around the square, visibly upset and shaken by the carnage and destruction.

Once Father Zantus points them in the right direction, Jessa takes the lead...even sending Blackwing ahead to scout for their priestly friend. She fears something horrible may have happened to him, as well...and she encourages Mitnal to hurry along.

With every step, Jessa feels an angry wave of emotion building inside her. Some part of her wants to severely punish these goblins for violating Sandpoint and preying on innocents. She even contemplates using her strongest magic to inflict painful revenge upon them. But she also remembers the all-too-easy way her dagger punched through the goblin who attempted to jump on her back.

'That goblin represents the first sentient creature I've ever willingly killed,' she thinks, 'It would have killed me, too, if I hadn't. I've got to remember that. But thank Nethys I didn't have to slay those last two. I just hope that enchantment works long enough to drive them away forever.'

The pain subsides. Suddenly the sounds of chaos solidify into screams and running. There is an overwhelming smell of something burning. Gengar coughs and sits up. He opens his eyes and it all returns. Goblins! Jessa! Pain! Gengar jumps to his feat, wobbles a bit and then looks around.

"Jessa, lass! I am so glad to see you ok! No help from me, I regret, but still, my heart is lifted."

"Mitnal! Basketweaver...I think I own you my life." he says with a slight catch in his voice.

Gengar turns to see Father Zantus. "Thank you' god for me, kind sir..."

Then Gengar reaches into his pocket and pops a small hand full of goodberries into his mouth and reaches for his throwing axes.

Gengar chews up 6 goodberries to recover 6hp.

Gengar Whittlewood wrote:

Mitnal winces to hear this. In his tribe, to save someone's life (especially a non-tribe member), to intervene when the spirits call one back to themselves, is presumptuous and means to take responsibility for them forever. Anything Gengar does from this point onward that offends anyone, reflects badly on Mitnal. Anything Gengar does that pleases, demonstrates Mitnal's good judgement. 'No worries', thinks Mitnal, 'Gengar is a good man and I will not regret my decision.'

Mitnal grabs his warhammer and klar back from Jessa and looks for the nearest group of goblins and Kinmorn and heads in that direction. If Kinmorn is in melee combat with a group of goblins, Mitnal will try to come at them from the other side. As he runs, he pops open his basket of stolen fishcakes and tries to shower them with it.

Range attack with basket of stolen fishcakes: 1d20+4=13

I'm sure that I don't actually need to hit them but hit the square they are in ... this would be like a splash attack right :-)

Behind the Cathedral:

The chanting goblin with the whip takes a five foot step toward Ruano and attempts to take out one of his legs and misses, cracking the whip into the dirt at Ruano's feet. Although Ruano and Spot now flank one goblin, he's still more afraid of the big man with the big sword and focuses his attention on the sheriff, along with his companion, who steps to the side to again try to flank Hemlock. Though the sheriff is a competant fighter, he still has his hands full defending himself from two sides and the goblin who stepped to his left side takes advantage of an opening, scoring a hit to his ribs.

The goblin who had, until now, been satisfied to play with fire, realize that the attackers mean business, and drop their torches to enter the fight. One closes to flank Ruano and the other steps in to up the odds against the sheriff. Even as Ruano watches the new attacker coming, he fails to get his guard up in time and takes a vicious slash from a dogslicer. The goblin who steps in to attack the sheriff stumbles a little over the body of his fallen comrade and fails to connect.

Keeping it honest:

Whip goblin's trip attack against Ruano: (1d20+1=10)
Goblin attacks on Sheriff Hemlock: (1d20+3=6, 1d20+3=21)
Damage: (1d4=4)
Goblin attack on Ruano: (1d20+3=21)
Damage: (1d4=4)
Goblin attack on Sheriff Hemlock: (1d20+3=8)

In the cathedral square:

Mitnal wrote:

You saw Kinmorn run off behind the cathedral where the flames are coming from, with the sheriff and a halfling on a dog. They are at least a hundred feet away. You can hear their fight, as well as a few others around the perimeter of the rapidly emptying square, but you can't see them.

Ruano spins in place, trying to bring his shield between himself and the onrushing Goblin. He's much too slow, and still disoriented from leaping from Spot's back, receiving a bloody gash across his shoulder and upper arm above the shield.
He calls, "Spot!" to get the dog to cover his back. He still needs to help the sheriff. The momentum of his spin carries him back around, and he makes another attempt on the Goblin's back.

Club attack on the Goblin between himself and Hemlock.
Roll: 1d20 + 1 + 2 (flank) + 1 (bless) = 12 + 1 + 2 + 1 = 16
Damage: 1d4 = 4

Spot, defending as much by instinct as command, turns to face Ruano's new attacker, leaping at the bobble-headed cretin.

Spot's not clever enough to flank here. Her attack:

One remains fighting the sheriff, however, and feeling the blood rush of combat upon you, you charge that one instead, spitting him through the chest.

The goblin warchanter with the whip takes stock of the fight and realizes that she is the only one left standing on her side. Spitting a curse in the goblin tongue, she drops her whip and flees the battlefield.

The three of you (plus spot) stand for a moment catching your breath, covered in the blood of your enemies, as Mitnal (and probably Jessa and Gengar) come running up to join you.

"We're going to lose those church buildings," says Sheriff Hemlock. "We need to get a bucket brigade going."

Before he can say another word, however, a cry for help from over by the North Gate pierces the gathering gloom.

"Help! HELP ME!" A noble and his hunting dog come running down Church Street from the direction of the White Deer, chased by two goblins riding ugly, rat-like dog creatures, and almost a dozen more on foot.

"HELP! HEL--" He stumbles in the mud of the street and plunges face first to the ground, as one of the goblins rides up and cuts down the hunting dog with a blow from a large, cruel sword.

Kinmorn looks at the burning building, torn for a moment. But the moment is brief. The life of a man must come before that of a building he decides.

Then Kinmorn begins to move towards the mounted goblins.

OOC: Assuming we roll with our best initiative modifier, it looks like that would be Mitnal at +5...so our party initiative would be:

Mitnal's initiative roll for the party = (1d20+5=24)

Jessa's eyes widen at the sheer mass of tiny goblins chasing after the poor nobleman. She glances at the others as if to measure their chances of helping him together. And she takes some measure of confidence in seeing Sherriff Hemlock with them...though he does seem quite wounded.

'What can I do?' Jessa asks herself, mentally reviewing her spells for something that might even the odds. Finally, she hits upon an idea, but to make it work she knows she'll need as many of the goblins grouped together as possible. So she realizes it's probably best to wait for an opening and stay behind one of the bigger warriors.

"Awwwk...stay with Mitnal, stay with Mitnal..." Blackwing croaks in her ear. And for once, the bird's mistress agrees with him.

"I'm staying close with you, Mitnal..." she explains to the big barbarian, "If we can get a bunch of the goblins together, I know some magic that might knock them out. But I need someone to keep them off me..."

OOC: Jessa is essentially using her move action to go wherever Mitnal does, but intentionally staying behind him and out of melee. She's basically searching for the largest grouping of goblins and "rat-dogs" so she can cast color spray.

Male Human Cleric 1

Kinmorn, as noted, will cast Divine Favor. Is the bless (1 minute length) still in effect?

Male Human of the Shoanti Shriikirri-Quah Tribe Barbarian 3

Mitnal feels content with the fight so far. He's fought while maintaining a clear head and hasn't lost himself in grief, anger, or the fog of war. Smiling at Jessa, he wipes some of the accumulated goblin brain and bone from his warhammer onto his trousers and says "I'm getting pretty good at this pacifism thing."

Having unhooked his little basket full of stolen fishcakes from his belt while jogging over there, he loosens the lid and throws it overhand into the mass of goblins aiming for the spot right behind the dogs.

"We'll see if this works. Ameiko's fishcakes are incredible!"

Please use the previous attack roll

Jessa assumes Sherriff Hemlock, Kinmorn, and the halfling and his dog will likely engage the mounted goblin closest to them. Meanwhile, Shantare and nobleman seem to have a veritable army closing in, so she urges Mitnal and Gengar in that direction...always being careful to stay behind them. Once she sees the goblin footsoldiers arrayed behind the second mounted leader, Jessa recognizes the perfect opportunity for her spell.

Stepping past Mitnal to a position just in front of the rat-dog creature, she intones the words to one of her more powerful enchantments. A rainbow of colors appear, spinning and rolling in a complicated pattern of dazzling light within her hands. With one final flourish, she flings her arm in a wide arc launching the display into the goblin horde.

OOC: Jessa casts color spray (Will save, DC 14), positioning the area of effect so that it begins with the second mounted goblin, washing over him, his rat-dog, and then into the ranks of footsoldiers behind him. The spell has a range of 15 feet. Judging by the map, it looks like there should be several within that range. I'll leave it to your best judgement as to exactly how many. But Jessa intends to use her move action to close the distance enough to maximize the effect. And she hopes Mitnal and Gengar are there to mop up any goblins that try to stop her.

'Spot, sic...', Ruano begins to order spot to chase down the fleeing warchanter, trailing off as the goblin cavalry arrives. Suddenly he has bigger problems. '...him!' he completes, spinning round to point at the mounted goblin who just ran through the hunting dog. Spot rears up, then charges.

Ruano himself tries to think fast. What to do? There are too many of those goblins to face down one on one. Especially without his armor. Wait a moment. He's under the blessing of Old Deadeye! Time to do what halfings do best. He unbuckles his shield and drops it to the floor. I hate leaving things behind. I'll have to remember all this stuff later. His newly freed shield hand enters the large pouch at his waist, emerging not with a sling bullet, but with three smooth river pebbles. <Spirits of the Earth, Souls of these Stones, I call on you to smite those who would defile the beauty of Nature!>

Spot will attack the goblin dog that the indicated goblin is riding. She knows that if she can drag it down, the goblin will come with it. Also, she won't charge if she doesn't have to (she's wary of that long blade,) but she will if she has to in order to attack this turn.

Without thinking, without hesitation, the group leaps into action to protect the fallen noble. Mitnal tosses his fishcakes in a high arc, landing them precisely where he wanted. Gengar flings an axe at the nearest goblin rider, catching him in the chest. Ruano orders Spot into combat and casts his spell.

Jessa, heedless of the danger to herself runs right up in front of the farthest charging rider and casts her spell. In fact, as she completes the arcane ritual, her eyes get big as the goblin aims its cruel halberd right at her chest and she can feel the hot breath of the goblin dog on her face. Then a brilliant burst of harsh, colored light blasts out in a fan in front of her, causing the goblin, his mount, and the three goblins behind him to collapse to the ground.

She even has to take a small step back to avoid the limp mass of the goblin's mount as it slides to a stop at her feet, carried by the momentum of its charge.

Shantare Steps up beside Mitnal to strike at the remaining goblin dog, piercing it in the shoulder, but failing to bring it down. The unexpected arrival of blockers causes the goblin to pull his mount's charge up short.

Spot charges in to attack the goblin's ugly mount, grabbing it by the leg. The rat dog struggles to resist, but ultimately succumbs to Spot's viscious tug and tumbles over, spilling his rider to the ground.

Goblin dog trip resistance: (1d20+6=18)

Hemlock runs up to the fallen rider and cuts the prone figure down.

That'll help, Ruano thinks as half the goblins fall over in siezure fits. He drops his club to prepare his sling, hurling one of the enchanted stones toward the charging goblins.

Spot struggles with the overgrown rat she dragged down.

I didn't add any prone bonuses/penalties because I don't know if the goblin dog will still be tripped by my turn. If the dog tries to stand while next to her, she'll take her AoO.

Ruano does his damnedest to take down one of the goblins, but he probably missed.

Jessa's heart pounds in her chest as she starts to think about what she just did. Her eyes widen again as she realizes there are still goblins coming, and two of them are making a beeline for her.

Screaming a war chant in goblin that amounts to "KILL, KILL, KILL! STAB, STAB, STAB! BITE, BITE, BITE! CHEW, CHEW, CHEW!" they charge and attack. Their attacks interfere with each other, causing one to miss, but the other connects.

Goblin attacks on Jessa: (1d20+2=6, 1d20+2=13) Damage: (1d4=4)

A goblin charges Shantare and gets a strike with his dogslicer through her defences.

Attack: (1d20+2=15) Damage: (1d4=4)

Another charges Mitnal, but its attack turns off of Mitnal's Klar.

Attack: (1d20+2=8)

A goblin charges the sheriff and gets a lucky blow in, just nicking him.

Attack (1d20+2=16) Damage: (1d4=1)

Two more fling themselves at Spot in an orgy of battle fury and dog hatred, but neither of them manage to land a blow.

Goblin attacks on Spot: (1d20+2=4, 1d20+2=14)

It's dead. I'll apply the rolls to one of her new attackers instead.

Yep.

Charged with the power of his deity, and bristling with adrenaline, Kinmorn lowers his spear and rushes at one of the goblins doubleteaming the dog.

Attacking a goblin with a longspear(Charge+bless+divine favor): (1d20+1+2+1+1=22)

Mitnal looks on in stunned bewilderment as the goblins ignore the fishcakes he threw at them. He was sure at least the animals would pause to sniff at them if not the goblins themselves.

"By Gregor's Teeth! Try the damn fishcakes," he mutters as the goblins begin to attack passing the food without giving it a second glance.

He begins to feel anger welling inside of him. How come his plans never work? He's stayed cool, calm, and collected throughout this fight. He's fought with clarity of mind and of purpose. He's repressed the urge to howl in rage as these stinking, filthy, little creatures have attacked his friends and other innocent people. How come his plans never work? He was sure that Vender or Vinders or whatever the little man's name was would have fallen for his little trick with the coins. He was sure that the goblins would stop to eat some fishcakes. ... And now! Not only did he miss the opportunity to attack ... not only has he made a fool of himself in front of his friends ... but he's thrown away all of Ameiko's little fishcakes!

"TRY THE DAMN FISHCAKES!!" He yells unable to control his anger any further.

Mitnal flies into a rage attacking two-handed. If two goblins are close to him, he'll attack one with the hammer and the other with the Klar.

Attack 1: 1d20+3= (18) / Attack 2: 1d20+3= (18) /Damage 1: 1d8+4 = (8) / Damage 2: 1d6+2 = (3)

Fearing for her life, Jessa does everything in her power to back away. The fight clearly needs someone better prepared than she. After contributing her best spell, there's little more she can do. Blackwing takes to the air in the hopes of offering a distraction, but also stays out of harm's way.

"Mitnal! Help!?" she cries, focusing on nothing more than fending off any further attacks.

OOC: Jessa is using Total Defense as her standard action to gain a +4 Dodge bonus to her AC for this round, and then taking a move action to pull away from the combat and behind the other warriors.

Good. I didn't realize she'd killed it.

The Narrator wrote:

Yep.

Yeah, rolling a 3 will do that.

Just to help track, I have second round moves from Ruano & Spot, Mitnal, Kinmorn and Jessa. I still need them from Shantare and Gengar.

female human ranger/1

Shantare takes another swing at the goblin, although she is visibly weakened. Come on! She thinks. It's just a goblin!

Attack roll 12+2=14. 1d6+2=6 points damage.

Shouldn't that be +3 on your attacks with your rapier? 2 from strength and +1 for class. Not to be a nosy parker but ...

Male Dwarf Rogue 1

His first axe flew true! Gengar turns and sees the charging phalanx of singing goblins. He pulls his arm back and tosses his second throwing axe toward the closest goblin. He then reaches down and unfastens his handaxe, readying for the onslaught.

Atk: (1d20=4)

I don't know why I was spared my first death only to plunge to my second, but I vow to take a few more with me this time, the dwarf thinks bitterly. If only I had any skill with these silly things...

"Here they come!" he hollars with a laugh.

Gengar stays close to Mitnal and Jessa.

Battle map updated.

I'll update the round shortly.

Male, but you really don't want to know how to check gender on a beholder... Human. You just can't beat that extra feat and those extra skill points. Gamer 20 (specialist school - DMing)/Theater Tech 15/Writer 10/ Slacker 30

WHOOPS! I keep forgetting to put Gengar on there. Hang on, I'll take care of that shortly, too.

Battlemap updated again! Now with added Gengar! And fortified with Move Actions!

Also, those of you firing into melee (I'm looking at you, Gengar and Ruano), do not forget that you are firing into melee. Gengar, are you sure you want to fling that axe, whose final attack result was actually zero, in the direction of your friends?

ETA: Ruano, you may not have realized all goblins were in melee by the time you flung your stone. You too can reconsider, but your attack roll wasn't bad enough to actually endanger your friends.

Even with the fire-into-melee penalty, it's still better than my melee attack. Worst that can happen is I miss.

Ooh! I take that back. I just checked the math on Gengar, and I believe he included the check penalty. His ranged attack is +4 with the bless. My bad.

So, that throw is also a simple miss. No danger to any friends, but it does go sailing right past Mitnal's face, within a few inches, before continuing on harmlessly past the skirmish line..

Mitnal turns and shoots a furious glance at the woman ready to raise his warhammer against her. He seems just aware enough of his surroundings to redirect his attention to the goblins. As the fight proceeds, she can hear him singing angrily, trying to drown out the goblin's war song with his own.

Don't call my name in battle - it's not wise
Do not distract me when you see a new soul in these eyes.
For when the War God fills this flesh I wear,
I am no more your friend, I am the spirit of the bear.

Don't call my name in battle - stand away
For I will never hear you, but another creature may.
It never sees a friend, but only foes -
Just count the bodies flying where this taken body goes.

Don't call my name in battle - wait the time
Until I fall and rise again, with eyes you know are mine.
And then perhaps we'll rest and talk of home
But you'll not be surprised to see how much I walk alone.

Mitnal slams the goblin in front of him with a hammer blow, killing him instantly. His Klar swing injures one of the goblins threatening Jessa.

Gengar throws his axe and steps up to where Jessa and Mitnal are standing. Ruano flings a stone from his sling. Both of them miss.

Jessa, defending herself intently, steps back out of the fray and behind the other warriors. The goblins threatening her try to take advantage of her retreat, but fail.

Goblin attacks of opportunity: (1d20+2=7, 1d20+2=13)

Shantare takes down the goblin in fron of her with a rapier thrust to the eye.

Spot attampts to take down one of the goblins facing her, but fails to get through its defenses.

Sheriff Hemlock cuts down the goblin in front of him, adding to the pile of goblin corpses now littering the road at your feet.

Sheriff's attack and damage: (1d20+11=14, 1d8+7=10)

Kinmorn charges forward to defend Spot, wounding a goblin with his spear point.
