Based on Present Actions of Everyone
For Grael and Targ, Listen Check DC 20:
For Szaranoth, Spot and Listen Check DC 18:
Ingowil. She is screaming, “Stop Thief!”
Etellio joins Szaranoth in searching for Ingowil but the large volume of people hampers Etellio's efforts.
For Ingowil, Spot Check DC 15:

Szaranoth |

Active Aura: Senses
Spot (1d20 1=18)
Listen (1d20 1=13)
"Etellio! I think I saw Ingovil's hair through the crowd. If I'm not mistaken, she ran into that alley, pursuing someone. Quick. Follow me." Szaranoth lets go a whistle from his four fingers and then points in the direction he wants to take. Then he starts to makes his way through the crowd to the point, where he spotted Ingovil disappearing into the alley. I hope, we are not too late, not again.
This is really loud... take the index and middle finger from each hand, put it in your mouth and blow out hard (it is not easy, but it works and reaches far, even over a crowd).

Ingowil |

Spot check 14+2=16
Ingowil runns full pelt after the man and notices him turning into the alley. She makes to run into the alley, but is stopped by the awful smell. "Come on, people, give me my purse." She says exasperatedly. She steps forward catiously, looking into the dark alley.

Etellio |

"Etellio! I think I saw Ingovil's hair through the crowd. If I'm not mistaken, she ran into that alley, pursuing someone. Quick. Follow me."
Having heard the whistle and seeing Szaranoth dash off, Etellio follows him towards Ingowil's location.
Hmmm...what can I can do here...spell or weapon?

For Ingowil:

Szaranoth |

Running through the market (2d4+2=7)
Argh, all those people... move, get out of my way.
"Excuse me. Beg your pardon. Sorry. Please, let me through."
Apparently, Szaranoth has chosen a path where hundreds of people are milling about.

Targ, Szaranoth, Etellio and Grael emerge from the crowded square and meet up near an alley you think Ingowil was heading to. You look around and notice a man seated in the dirt in front of a red curtain. He is placing cards in a distinctive pattern one after the other. It is a Harrow deck. You notice that weird tattoos cover the man's leathery skin.
Noticing you for the first time, the man flashes you a smile. "Care to have your fortune read."

Targ the Unwieldy |

2d4+2=7
Looks like we're all going to get there about the same time...
Targ glances at the man. "Not right now, we're busy." He scans the alley and the surroundings, looking down the length of his crossbow.

Szaranoth |

Etellio |

Etellio gives the man a hard stare, and suddenly utters
"Movat apre, mentosi!" - hoping (on a hunch) it will rattle the man so we can get through.
If you understand Varisian...
Intimidate (1d20+2=20) if needed...
For Radavel:
If that doesn't work, he will try to see if he can jump through the curtain. Not certain what I should attempt here, so I am thinking a tumbling check (not trained - so let me know if that works).
Yay! Natural 20 - I hope it's good for something.

For Grael, Etellio, Szaranoth and Targ:
The fortune teller is surprised and shocked at the words of Etellio, allowing Grael to move pass him and tear down the curtain, revealing the alley.
For Grael:
For Etellio, Targ and Szaranoth:
For Ingowil:

Szaranoth |

"Hold!" Szaranoth shouts. "Any move to draw or use weapons will be regarded hostile! You have surrounded a deputy of the local sheriff and I'd suggest, you comply with what she wants. Other actions will lead to similar responses."
If things get hostile, I will switch to my Energy Shield aura, when it is my turn in the order. If they freeze, I will continue with giving them the options they have, i.e. giving back the stolen objects and enjoying the day out of town without getting arrested or stay in town, but in the brig, but food and drink from the festival will be supplied to them.

Etellio |

Seeing Ingowil surrounded, an old memory suddenly comes back to Etellio...something that clearly brings a flush of anger to his face. Glancing icily from the fortune teller to the men in the alley, he follows up Szaranoth's proclamation, coolly stating to them:
"Mofas l'agrad e'Desna par'ruebas t'ha trai mar fortun, campisi. Commendi rendicio, nosque enfanqo es'sacred fiestiva y s'ira!"
Varisian speak for:
Taunting the will of Desna for robbery has brought you ill luck, fellows. I suggest you surrender, lest you stain this holy festival and raise her ire!"
Intimidate (1d20+2=18)
If the Varisian speak is annoying, let me know...I'll go with a more conventional approach.
If it looks like confrontation is unavoidable, I'll start preparing a spell.
Targ points his crossbow right at the fortune teller's chest. "Now don't you think about running off anywhere.
Nice save...here I was worried we were all too busy staring into the alley and not paying attention to him.

Alex Martin |

For Radavel:
This may be for the discussion thread, but...
I am considering casting a sleep spell if combat breaks out.
Is there any way to target the three thugs in the alley w/o hitting Ingowil in the spell area? My only guess would be to center it on Ingowil since it is a 10' radius burst. Yea or nay?
Also, if I do decide to hit them with the spell, can I get all three anyway?

![]() |

For Ingowil:
The tension is broken when the knife man shouts at the men behind Ingowil, “Boys, sheathe your weapons and invite the good deputies to arrest this thief!” He points at Ingowil.
The men behind Ingowil obeying the bidding of the knife man and bow to Grael who is at the opening of the alley. One of them says, "We have captured this thief. Please take her away."
As if on cue, the fortune teller screams, “Yes, she is a thief! And a dangerous harridan to boot!” He also points at Ingowil.

Etellio |

Etellio glances skeptically at the knife man...
Well...aren't you clever...something's not right here...Sense Motive (1d20=9)
Instinctively, he looks around the alley and the men to see if he spots a hidey hole or perhaps a cut purse somwhere.
Bait and switch trick...?

Szaranoth |

Szaranoth smiles, but this smile is not the hearty quick smile, but a hard grim smile.
"I think you have missed a small detail, I also stated earlier. But to make things more clear to you. I have a red sash, my dwarven friend has a red sash and your 'supposed' thief...hm.. she has a red sash, too. Grab them, guys."

Grael |

Szaranoth smiles, but this smile is not the hearty quick smile, but a hard grim smile.
"I think you have missed a small detail, I also stated earlier. But to make things more clear to you. I have a red sash, my dwarven friend has a red sash and your 'supposed' thief...hm.. she has a red sash, too. Grab them, guys."
Grael sighs. "Very well. Men, we can do this the easy way, or we can do it the way that may end in a funeral."

![]() |

One of the men says, "Well she looked liked one running this way and that trying to find a hiding place. Just to settle this, you can search us if you want. But I bet you now that you will not find anything stolen in this area or on our persons. We are honest folk. For the record, we have sheathed our weapons even before you made the demand to do so."
The fortune teller parrots, "Yes we are honest folk. Just trying to earn a living."

Etellio |

Etellio still feels something's not right about this situation...like they are being misled...Grael must have seen something to cause such a stitch...
He glances behind them and back towards the square...looking for someone or something they might have missed escaping or avoiding us...
Barring that, he gives the alley a more thorough look if he can (I am assuming it is a dead-end alley, not an alley way that continues to another street).
