Personality
Spoiler:
First and foremost, Targ is an individualist. He doesn't like rules and authority, which drove him from Janderhoff in the first place. He strives to be a survivor, relying on no one but himself. But he knows that not everyone has that luxury, and so he tries to help those who cannot help themselves. In a larger sense, Targ has dedicated his life to protecting "civilization" (i.e., the common folk) from the dangers of the "wilderness" (i.e., dangerous humanoids, giants, and beasts).
Background
Spoiler:
Originally a native of Janderhoff, Targ left home at a young age, feeling more at home in the trackless wilderness of Varisia than in the cramped warrens of his native city. He spent some time wandering the Cinderlands and Storval Plateau with the Shoanti tribes, and it was among them that he gained his nickname.
At a large gathering of the tribes, Targ and his companions happened upon a young Shoanti boasting of his great strength. This massive young man, with flaming red hair and arms the size of tree trunks, claimed to be able to throw anything. He demonstrated his prowess by throwing knives, axes, earthbreakers, and even heavy rocks and tree trunks. The young man offered a challenge to the gathered spectators that there was nothing not rooted to the earth that he could not throw. Targ immediately stepped forward, planted his feet and challenged the young man to throw him. The young man stepped forward confidently, but found that he was unable to even budge the stalwart dwarf, much less throw him, to the amusement of the spectators, who immediately dubbed Targ with the honorific “the Unwieldy.”
Targ then traveled east to the Fogscar Mountains, where he cut his teeth fighting the goblin hordes ensconced there. Recently, he has heard rumors of goblin tribes massing around the area of Sandpoint, and so has headed there in hopes of adding more goblin teeth to his belt.
