White shepherds commonaly possess a trait whereby they bond very strongly with a single owner. When I eventually wormed my way into the heart of a white shep named Tanya, she went from ignoring me outright to chasing down a mastiff who growled at me when I fell down. I felt so honored.

whippet!

English bulldogs are also really cool. My younger brother has one of those. The big problem with them, from what he's told me, is that they can overheat very easily. If you live in a really hot environment, you have to really watch them sometimes.

Aye, I've got an English bull and live in Florida, so she doesn't go out except to potty, or in an air conditioned car about 8 months out of the year. Unfortunately, the OP mentioned a lack of drool as a pre-req, and most, but not all bulldogs are drool factories. My little girl happens to be an exception. She makes up for it in other, more odorous ways.

One of them bit me on the arse when I was 4. It came bounding up, I ran off like a little byoch, and it gave me the old arse chomp.

Yeah, despite my regular grumbling about him (due to his size and still being a big goofy pup) I will admit this is the best dog we have ever had. Very good with the kids, protective of the home, and the sheer look of terror he causes when he is charging at someone.

Plus, when he reaches full size I think I might be able to saddle him up and ride him to work.

I took a bite when I was four from a shepherd. I wept, and learned a lesson about how to approach a dog, I'll tell you what. After that, me and dogs were mostly all good... until an Akita tore my hand in half. That was a bad day at Black Rock.

I killed and ate it to overcome my fear. Oh, wait, that was G. Gordon Liddy with a rat.

Whippet good.

I took care of the three whippets who belonged to the New York Knicks dentist (he must have needed a bigger chair). They had a fenced in yard and I enjoyed chasing them around off the leash. Whippets can reach 32 MPH so needless to say, despite my track and field skills, it was a no contest. All I saw was doggy ass and elbows way up there in the distance, pulling into a different time zone.

I had a half greyhound, half whippet that one time I put his feed bowl on top of a dodge van for a second, he jumped up there and got his foreclaws on the roof and climbed up. He was dining on top of the world. Lil' bastich.
They're slower in the straightaway than a greyhound, but they're better for coursing rabbits because a whippet can turn on a dime better than a greyhound.
It's rumored that they were bred so a 19th century (British/whatnot) poacher could hold them under his overcoat and "whippet out" when he saw a rabbit; and hide the dog from the authorities. I don't know if this is true, though.

Me too!

Wait... what were we talking about?

Be careful! You may inadvertently summon the Firebeetle...

Before anyone says it, yes, I know that was tacky...

(lol) I didn't even think about the "hippie crack" connotations when I posted.

"Where the Red Ferns Grow" is another great dog/sob story. Bawled my eyes out in math class in 4th grade over that one.

That book traumatised me.

Oh yes, I remember it well. :|

On a completely unrelated note, dogs taste yummy.
Not that I had anything whatsoever to do with the happy--I mean, sad--ending.
