3.P or... 4.P ?

4th Edition

Dark Archive

Erik in his post about Paizo's conundrum right now was talking about the possibility, if the company stuck with 3.5, to release a new set of 3.X core books that would integrate with the rest of the Pathfinder/GameMastery universe and feel.

Wayne Ligon, later, was talking about the possibility to work on something integrated to Pathfinder akin to Monte Cook's Arcana Unearthed.

Which made me wonder...

What if there was a Pathfinder 4.P RPG ?

See, what I dislike with WotC's 4E at the moment is the whole "let's milk everything" marketing, PR, digital initiative, redesign monsters and basic feel of Fourth Edition.

But what if the rules themselves rock? Provided there's an equivalent to the OGL and/or d20 License, wouldn't it be possible to produce something akin to Arcana Unearthed with alternate classes, races and such that would depict the particular feel of Golarion just like AU used the Diamond Throne as a "default" setting and basically help the dungeons and dragons we love to survive while riding 4E's wave at the same time?

If anything, this could be used just like AU, as an alternate source of house rules for particular games. It would only enrich the 4E experience, appeal to those who dislike Wizards' approach, and would plant the seeds to make Paizo more independent in regards to a fifth, 4.5 whatever edition?

How do you guys feel about that?

To be helpful, I think it would be best if everyone who replies set aside the comment "but they don't have 4th edition rules yet". The only way to engage Benoist on this idea is to assume they either do get them in time, or they do so later.

That assumption aside....

I think it sounds really interesting, and constructive. I read Wayne's original post, and he got sidetracked a little the first time, but when he came back and explained what he really meant.. It had some merit to it.

The gypsy spellcaster class for example. Madame Mvashti has three classes- but what if she belonged to a class all her own?

I also like how Golarion is a default, which makes it completely marketable to Pathfinder folks, but since it's only a default, it's also marketable to anybody.

Anyway.. I think it's fascinating. Love to hear more, since it's only brainstorming.

If the rules rock and the SRD allows us to publish in a way that doesn't compromise our business (both things I currently expect to happen), then it is quite likely that Paizo will use 4.0 as a basis for most of its products.

I don't yet have confirmation of either of those factors, but I am told it is coming.

In that event, does it mean you'd think about publishing a 4E Pathfinder variant PHB or something similar, Erik?

That would be outstanding, if it came to pass. I own Arcana Evolved, and thought it was of such incredible quality as an alternate PHB & campaign setting, I'm playing in it now. I earlier thought I would be satisfied w/ a Living Golarion Gazzetteer, modelled after the Living Greyhawk Gazzetteer (one of my all-time favorite D&D books). And I believe there's one coming out next year. But a variant PF PHB would be equally awesome, and a great way to bring new players into the game. If the theory is there will be a critical mass of players using 4th ed, why not at least get them to use Golarion as their default setting?

While I always run campaigns in my own homebrew, I think this is a great idea. I'd buy a copy just out of academic interest (as I did with the FR and Eb settings).

That makes me very happy. I have not lost confidence in WotC in part because of your reassurances.
