Pathfinder world - pronunciation guide?

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

Liberty's Edge

1 person marked this as a favorite.

As one who frequently butchers the English language - and yes, I am a native speaker ;-), I would be interested in a pronunciation guide for some of the place names, deities, new monsters, etc. in the developing Pathfinder/GameMastery world.

We've no plans to produce something like this yet... but feel free to post names to this thread. I'll be stopping by now and then and can certainly do up some impromptu pronounciation guides here...

Liberty's Edge

Let's start with the world itself - Golarion:

How do you pronounce it?

We pronounce it to sound like "clarion" with an extra "o" sound
near the beginning. So clarion -> colarion -> Golarion.

Liberty's Edge

How about our two regions:
Varisia and Thassilon?

Sorry to bring up an old post like this, but I can't find anything more recent.

I'm about to run Hollow's Last Hope, and my players have been asking how to pronounce Iomedae and Sarenrae.

Thank you so much!

How about these names? The asian ones are really hard for me to guess particularly.

"Ameiko", "Tsuto", and "Kaijitsu"

...and Shalelu Andosana

Assuming they use Japanese pronunciation (and my limited knowledge of such is correct), that would be "ah-MEE-koh", "SU-toh" and "KAI-jih-su". Kai pronounced like "eye" with a K on the front. The T in 'tsu' is silent (see: tsunami). Japanese words very very rarely have syllables that end in any consonant other than 'n', so it's usually pretty easy to seperate them.

I pronounce it "sha-LAY-loo AND-oh-sahn-a", but YMMV.

I'd say you're probably pretty close on most of them. I'd pronounce Ameiko as ah MEH ee koh, but it would come out sounding just like you said. :D The "t" in Tsuto and tsunami aren't silent. It's only because Americans are lazy do we drop the t. It should be pronounced TSU-toh (and TSU nah me).

"Ameiko", "Tsuto", and "Kaijitsu"

The Minkai ("japanese") names can be broken down into their component "letters" (using katakana):

Ameiko:

A------me-----i-----ko
(ah) (meh) (ee) (koh)

Tsuto:

Tsu----to
(tsu) (toh)

Kaijitsu:

Ka-------i-----ji----tsu
(kah) (ee) (jee) (tsu)

Down and dirty pronunciations:

Ah-may-koh

Tsu-toh

Kai-jee-tsu

The "tsu" is pronounced like the "tzu" in Shih Tzu.

Aurochs were real. They were European cattle (now extinct.) I believe the pronunciation is more like OW-rock (the first syllable sounds like "cow".)

Huh. I never thought of pronouncing her name like that. I've always pronounced it sheh-LIN.

But whatever works for you works for me. I'm the one who mispronounced necromancer for a long time. ;D

Yeah.. he pronounced "necromancer" as "TIM"

It was weird and confusing.

It's spelled Varisia, but it's pronounced "Throat Wabbler Mangrove."

When i kiss my girlfriend's neck, does that make me a necromancer?

Huh. So this whole time, you've actually known my little "side" profession, Mike? Speaking in "code"?

Gee, I thought I'd hidden all the bodies better than that....I guess one got up and walked away. ;-)

Indeed. That was your downfall, sir!

I looked but didn't see a pronunciation for Sihedron.

I always thought as funny the fact that most of English RPG pronunciations are very close to Brazilian Portuguese in sound :D

And here in Brazil most players and DM's try very hard to give an english sound to their characters... ::lol::

Uh, by the way, I meant syllable pronunciation, not word meaning.

Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.....

If necromancer isn't pronounced like "neck romance," what kind of crazy pronounciation are you guys using? Because that's how it's supposed to be pronounced.

Just pronounce it the way someone in the business does..

I.e. Doctor Orpheus....

please tell me at least most of you understand the reference....

I'm completely lost.

There's an alternate pronunciation to necromancer, and who is doctor orpheus?

Okay William.

Its that some people say

NEE CROW MAN SIR
others say

NECK RO MAN SIR

Dr. Orpheus is from the Adult Swim show 'The Venture Bros.' He is essentially making fun of the old comic character 'Dr. Strange', but being this melodramatic Dark Wizard with cosmic powers. I would strongly suggest it if you enjoy satirical animation.

Ah, . . . venture brothers . . . caught an episode of it once . . . very unusual. something about race bannon dying . . . and as far as the pronunciation of necromancer . . . that's just weird.

Hence people talking about "Neck Romancing" above. Not just for the undead and Vampires anymore.

I absolutely do. In fact, I believe there's a Dr. Orpheus quote in Skinsaw Murders!

O.o

I will redouble my efforts and look for the quote. If there is no quote...
I will likely then look again...NO WAY!

"Tag Sale, you're it!" That episode just about says it all about Dr. Orpheus

Resurrects thread
This may have been asked somewhere else or even answered on this thread already but I've not been able to find it. How do you pronounce Karzoug? Is it Car-zog?

Sovereign Court

I say Kar-ZOOG, in a bad Romanian acccent. I even roll the R a little and lift my brows enticingly.

Karrrr-ZOOG.
