From what I've read above I get it, that none of you guys has checked the PTOLUS setting...
Man, that is the best thing ever!!!
I also like Eberron more and more and love to read about Greyhawk. I DMed FR for years and I still can't understand why everyone is saying it's HIGH MAGIC?! Guys, it's only as much High Magic as the DM allows it to be! That said, the world of the FR are a nice place to adventure in and there are some really cool places to explore and visit. The power groups are mostly nicely done and I NEVER used on of the iconics.

Personally, I wouldn't even know how to use the iconics, except possibly as plot hooks. Actually having them let rip and save the day? Sounds a bit silly to me. The setting has plenty of space for the party withoutout any extraneous help.
And I've also noticed that some of the FR NPCs seem to be getting wasted in the canon. Maybe it has always happened, but there does seem to be a bit of spring cleaning going on.

![]() |

The biggest problem I have seen with FR, and Dragonlance, and for that matter Star Wars or Bab 5 RPGs, is the expectations of the players. I don't have the ability to have my Sunday night game have the same plot strength as a professionally written and edited book (movie, series, etc.), let alone series.
As a result, the players always seem a bit disappointed to only be in a "normal-sized" adventure, as opposed to some epic.
It is just the expectation created by the canon, and not the canon itself that hurts

That's probably about the best explanation I've seen for the negative connotations FR seems to have at times.
Personally I never ran into the expectation of canon during my FR games. The one I DMed about 18 years ago was when the Realms was still relatively new as a campaign setting so there wasn't a proliferation of canon beyond the boxed set and a half dozen novels. A few years ago I was a player in an FR game set in the Dalelands, but none of the other players knew much about the Realms, not having read any of the books, etc.

Who else played alternity.
I own a minimum of 2 of everything. Three of the Limited PH. : ) Sadly, I have more GMG than PH? Not sure how that happened.

Yeah, I do think sometimes is the expectations, and not the actual canon, that gets in the way of what people think of any given setting. Honestly, I can't remember off hand, but it actually says how many peole live in Faerun at the begining of the FRCS . . . there are millions of them. Waterdeep itself has over 500,000 during the summer trading months . . . how likely is it that any one person will run into Khelben or Laeral at any given time?

Man, there have been so many...but I have to say RIFTS is at the top of list (somewhere). I love love love love love the setting (the rules system is for another discussion). Brodkil, the Coalition, Millennium Trees, Splugorth, the Yama Kings, the Angel of Death, the Cyber Knights, Psyscape, Nxla, Dog Boys, Ley Lines, Ley Line Walkers, Bursters, the Lone Star complex...such fun stuff!
FR, Eberron, GH, and Pathfinder/Golarion are all equally fantastic. To paraphrase James Jacobs, they all scratch a different itch.

As a DM, Ravenloft was my favorite. I love the feeling of paranoia built into that setting, and being a fan of Hammer Horror, loved to incorporate some of that mystique into my adventures. Plus, I'm a sucker for vampires, undead, and lycanthropes...
As a player, it used to be the Realms (until all them books came out). Played many a campaign there and enjoyed it. After the books came out and completely took the "Forgotten" out of the Realms, it became Greyhawk. Lots of fun areas with a diversity of climates. It suits any kind of campaign you'd want to play.
Non D&D world: Whatever world Traveller was set in. Man, that was a fun setting that was very flexible to work with. And, of course, the 1920s Cthulhu Campaign world...

The GW miniature game, or do you RP in that setting?
Yes, after playing Necromunda we really got into the setting and I ended up using the Warhammer rpg rules system to do a Necromunda roleplay game.
It was one of our most exiciting, mean and down right nasty campaigns ever! All the PC's were either bounty hunters, psychos, exiled/wanted gangers or general cold blooded killers! I was greatly influenced by Mad Max films and Preacher comics and all kinds of stuff like that at the time. :)

Sounds very cool. I once played around with a Necromunda and/or 40K setting using the Alternity rules, but it never got off the ground.

For published D&D campaigns, no question: Planescape. The art, concepts and the feel of it entranced me from day 1
For non-D&D published game systems: World of Darkness (old edition). A lot of craftsmanship went into that game. The El Paso Chronicle I was a part of was a two-year oddysey that turned my character into a necromantic-leaning Tremere who went on (with his troupe) to battle a Sabbat Methuselah in a hidden crypt below Mexico City ..good times..good times
For TSR settings of any stripe: Gamma World. Love that gonzo mutant madness.
Nostalgia? Early Greyhawk, where a lot of the default campaigns were put in the early 80s, just 'cause I kinda felt that was the place. (and the maps were hella cool)

Pathfinder is now in first place. I can't wait to see more next year.
Greyhawk is running dragon neck to dragon neck with Pathfinder.
I'm reading Hamunaptra and its coming in third and I'm thinking of mixing it with Al-Qadim pdfs I found.
I like Aerth from Goodman Games, well anything pre-4E.
I like Dragonlance, but Post SAGA system/Third Edition.
I also like Kara-Tur. I wish Paizo would do a far eastern/oriental setting. Oh pleeeeeaaasssseee. I promise to buy more products and give up my first born daughter too.
Forgotten Realms was at the top, well anything prior to the Shadovar. WotC has wrecked it with 4E to the point where I treat anything after 1372 DR as a parallel universe.
I also like Star Wars D6, but I don't think that counts in this thread.

well I use a homebrew Forgotten Realms, where a few things are tweaked to my liking. In this Homebrew..Planescape and Ravenloft exist...
soooo
1) Forgotten Realms/Planescape/Ravenloft ;)
2) Harn
3. Glorantha (the original from Runequest)
That being said...I eagerly await Golarion (Sp?) I havent played any games in the setting yet...but I am certain with the acclaim everyone on the boards gives the setting...Ill be loving it. I eagerly await the Campaign Setting Book, and plan to get many of the campaign books that have info about it...

Shadow world: The Iron wind was just the greatest at the time.
I loved parts of Grey Hawk which makes me anxious for Second Darkness.
I really liked the original Forgotten Realms and still think it was one of the best at the time but then it became convoluted and just plain uber-detailed to the point a Gm couldn't do anything with it and quickly lost appeal.
Never cared much for planescape but I did pull a lot of good ideas from it. Same with SpellJammer.
Ravensloft was fun but only with a good GM.

Freehold DM |

1) Homebrew. Gotta love Freehold first.
2) Spelljammer, especially the Dungeon magazine re-imagining. Never gets enough love.
2) Dark Sun, tied for second, but listed after Spelljammer because of the massive amount of love it gets
3) Dragonlance. Loved it all, from the Legends Series to the current Amber and Blood series. I thought Saga was a good idea, but it was forced onto the setting- I'd love to see it in another setting all it's own.
4) Pathfinder. And I haven't even played it yet.
And rounding out the top 5...
5) Greyhawk. Cuz Lilith would bake me into a cookie if I didn't mention it.
For non D&D settings...
1) d6 Star Wars. Yeah, you heard me, d6. In this case, the oldest is still the best.
2) Lone Wolf. I was raised on these choose your own adventure type books and read and play the tabletop with relish. I love Magnamund.
3) Legend of the Five Rings. Once you get past the arrogant gits who really bring the series down and try to scare new people away from it, it's a great setting.
4) Old World of Darkness. The Sprite to D&D's coke. Still love Hunter and Werewolf.
5) New World of Darkness. Don't care for the uninspired rewrites of Mage, Werewolf and Vampire, but I'm loving Scion and Changeling and I can't wait for Hunter: The Vigil.

I'm not sure if the original poster intended the list to be purely fantasy-based campaign settings, but since the thread has gone in every direction, I will follow suit.
The list formatting can create some funkiness as it tries to conform itself to the profile picture so if it comes out unreadable, you have my apologies (and I've tried to put enough text above the list to push it below the level of the picture):
- Greyhawk
- Shadowrun
- World of Darkness

Forgotten Realms for characters such as Storm Silverhand, Arilyn Moonblade, Danilo Than.
Greyhawk for Iuz and the Tomb of Horrors and all those other great dungeons.
Dragonlance (for novels, not for play). Planescape for the artwork and the ideas.
Scarred Lands for a world without a trillion gods.
Oh, and for lots of violence, a visit to Rifts Earth and the land of MDC.

1. Birthright
2. Dark Sun
3. MystaraFavorite setting I could never manage to convince my players to try
1. Taladas .....
did anyone ever use the Time of the Dragon boxed set?
Ah, Taladas, quite the place. Yes, I did have the Time of the Dragon set. I even went as far as to create a PC, a half-elven Tamirnesti warrior who eventually ended up across the ocean and became a Solamnic Knight.
The other settings were pretty darn cool too (and I especially loved the Gazetteers), and don't forget about The Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk and Ravenloft as well as the Scarred Lands.

In no particular order:
1. Dragonlance - the majority of my original group grew up reading Dragonlance, but none had played D&D before, so I figured what better way to introduce them to the game. We started when the Campaign Setting was released for 3.5 and everything naturaly wrapped up just as 4th edition was announced.
2. Ptolus - if there's one setting we would all love to return to...
3. Pathfinder - need I really say more?
4. Eberron - We loved it because it was so different, esp since Dragonlance was our main setting.
5. Warhammer Fantasy - it took my group a bit to adjust to the tone and setting, but once they did we all had a blast
6. Warhammer - 40k - see above
7. Star Wars - I'll always have a soft spot for d6, but I love Saga

Yeah, I loved that box set. I dm'd a campaign there. We didn't get that far. I think we stopped at 8th level.
My personal favorite back in the old days was the Forgotten Realms. It just got convoluted over time though. The old gray box was the bomb.
What I like now:
1)Greyhawk-call me a heretic but I didn't like it until Holian and Mona.
2)FR
3)Dark Sun

Tier 1: Awesome. Love 'em to death.
Dark Sun, Planescape, Al-Qadim, Golarion, Ptolus
Tier 2: Big fan, occasional quibbles here and there, but still like 'em a lot.
Spelljammer, Forgotten Realms (pre-4e), Council of Wyrms, Birthright, Midnight
Tier 3: Worth playing, but not my favorites. Definitely worth mining for stuff, if nothing else.
Eberron, Greyhawk, Ravenloft, Diamond Throne (AU/AE)
Tier 4: Oh HELL no.
4e Forgotten Realms, any edition of Dragonlance (death to Kender!)

Forgotten Realms
I love reading it. Hate playing it, all the PC's I've ever played with/DM'ed for in that setting want to meet/kill/generally irritate D'rizzt/Elminster etc. and sulk until they get to. Annoys the heck outta me.

Let's see...
1) Dark Sun
2) the old World of Darkness
3) Ravenloft
4) I haven't played in them yet, but I like the concepts of both Midnight and Ars Magica's "Mythic Europe"... I look forward to trying those out soon.
That's about it. "standard" fantasy settings (such as Golarion, FR, Greyhawk, and so forth) have never really interested me... my default setting is a homebrew I've been working on for 17 years now, so every adventure I run starts out there...

![]() |

1. Greyhawk since I could walk. ;)
2. Planescape - tied to greyhwak, of course.
3. Ravenloft - for that "disposable PC" kinda mood.
Over the years I have more and more assumed the mantle of DM for my friends. I've run several 1st, 2nd and 3rd edition campaigns in the above settings. Currently, I'm finishing a Ptolus campaign (which was fun, but not as great as the aforementioned Big 3).
I have a high magic bronze age homebrew that has received extensive work, and a little playtesting, that my group loves. I'm planning to make it a 3P campaign world once Paizo releases their fansite guidelines. Its been a labor of love, and i expect it'll be my new number 2 once I retire Ptolus and put it into full swing.
I said #2 because nothing tops Greyhawk.

For D&D campaigns:
Golarion - Just loving the development
Eberron - love the setting, plays well and all the NPCs are lower level
Other worlds:
Barsaive - Earthdawn still rocks as a system and a world
Star Wars D6 - never gets old
Torg - the best multi-genre heroic system

Lenarior |

First place would be a tie between Fading Suns and Dark Sun.
Though I have to say that I don't realy like rating the different settings as I might think differently depending on what kind of mood I'm in.
Other settings that are pretty brilliant: Ravenloft, Earthdawn, Call of Cthulhu (gotta love the real world), Forgotten Realms, Mutant Chronicles and I shouldn't forgett Golarion.

Andreas Skye |

Mystara forever! (at least when it was called the Known World, I am showing my age)
Glorantha
Ptolus
Golarion is coming strong now.
I love Blackmoor and Wilderlands look interestingly... wild, but never got a chance to put a campaign together.
Most of my gaming was DL and FR, got over them, although the original 3.0 FR and DL books were quite good.
