Rasmus Fjolfsvang |

"With my dark skin, red eyes, and full armor, I don't do much casually," Rasmus thinks to himself. He pulls his cloak up higher over his helmet and stays to the side of the street. He also distances himself, about 10 yards, from the elf, knowing that they are not always welcome in the town of Barren Falls. A dark horned figure and an elven male may be too much for the guards to ignore. While walking, Rasmus turns to Guudwyn asking quietly, "Where did you study your faith, my good friend?"

Guudwyn Valoenus |

Turning to Rasmus, "I grew up in Crag. There is more to tell, but not here. When we have found sanctuary, we will pray and talk together."
Closing up the folds of his cloak, Guudwyn gives himself a quick look-over to determine that his armor & weapons are nicely hidden. Seeing that one-by-one his companions are merging into the crowd, he esimates his timing and follows.

I remember having read somewhere the mechanic for 'blending in' but I'm not sure where among the 50+ books on my shelf. Historically I have simply used a hide check with a lower DC based on crowd size.
As you make your way out of the alley, you can see that the daytime traffic has resumed its normal pace in your absence. Entering the main road and moving west towards the inn you see vendors hawking their many wares and feel the bustle of the small town around you. There are two (as opposed to the typical one) military patrols on the street. One is coming from the outpost to the east and the other seems to be stationed at the intersection where the disturbance occurred. Neither seem to be a current direct threat to you. Most of you blend in without so much as a glance. Rasmus garners a few curious glances but no more as those who look closer pull their children tighter to them and move quickly by. As you pass the Sequester on your right, the woman who was before standing is now sitting in a rocking chair on the porch, smiling at the crowd as they move by. Passing cobble way on your right and Temple Road on your left (with the forbidding shadow of the the temple itself a constant reminder of the true nature of this land) you approach your destination. You enter and are greeted warmly by Krellish, the proprieter. Xanros and Guudwyn have seen this dour dwarf with a scar across his forehead before, but the others have not. The inn is as previously described. Krellish looks as if he had a long night and was awakened earlier than he would like. You think it likely this is a common state for him to be in. After greeting you, he asks, "Will you be needing that room for another night gentlemen? Or possibly a couple more?" In a somewhat quieter voice he continues, "I heard from one of the messengers that there was a disturbance up the street a bit. Any of you know what's going on out there?" He grunts and continues, almost answering his own question, but still clearly looking for information from you, "Hmph. Probably another of those 'recruiting missions' from the temple, I suppose. Or maybe Kordrin Braxtor is up to no good again. Who knows? Anyway, I suppose I can ask Flavian when he comes by."

Xanros Duskwalker |

Xanros weaves in and out of the crowd, his nerves are shot and soon his head starts to hurt from trying to watch all the potential hazards in the busy square. Should of taken the back allies to get my gear Xan thinks, but could not have done it with everyone with out being seen.
We will be out of the crowd soon, Xanros's eyes going from the guards to some merchants and finally the women he saw earlier. Wonder what her deal is? Xanros takes another quick look to see if he notices anything and then continues on.

"I am not sure if I will need my room or if we need more for right now, we probably could use a table and some drinks" Xanros tells the dwarf. "As far as the commotion in the street there seemed to be a lot of panic but I didn't get a very good look." Xanros turns to the group, "I will check on my stuff and meet you down here in a minute." he turns and heads up the stairs to his room.

Rasmus Fjolfsvang |

Rasmus doesn't introduce himself to the dwarf. He was an outcast in the convent and imagines, quite correctly, that he would be seen as even more of one in this town. This realization leaves him with a feeling of helplessness, an emotion to which he is not accustomed. He secretly laments the fact that he was born this way, with no knowledge of its cause.
Meandering along the walls of the tavern, he notices a vacant table and claims it. He sits with his back to the rest of the patrons; his helmet and cloak remain on, hiding him from the outside world and it from him. When a waitress passes by, he orders a "spot of tea", an item he retrieved for the Head Mother on many occassions. Rasmus places his order in a much less commanding tone and without the accompanying smack to the back of the head. From beneath his helmet, he smiles wearily as he makes his request. Occasionally, he turns his head and attempting to conceal his intent, listens to the conversation between the short bartender and the shorter illusionist.

Crimson Conquest DM |

Krellish replies to Xanros, "Feel free to have a seat. I'll make sure one of the wenches gets over there right quick." Waving a hand impatiently at one of the serving girls and at the same time noticing Rasmus taking a seat he says, "That table should work just fine. Let me know if there is anything else I can get for you."
The table Rasmus chooses is large enough for perhaps 8 to dine at and is pulled out slightly from the southern wall. He sits on the northern side of the table with his back to those nearby. He hears some whispering as he sits, but the wiser voice in his head tells him it is likely not about him, but his paranoia states otherwise. The serving girl approaches somewhat cautiously, more because he makes an imposing figure than because of his appearance. That said, once she arrives at the table, she speaks confidently as if she has dealt with many strange sorts over time. When he orders a 'spot of tea' she looks downright stunned, but manages to hide it quickly. She mutters something about being able to do that and that she'll be right back. To her credit she arrives with the tea, albeit in a mug, as the others arrive at the table.
Xanros finds his visit to his room uneventful and is able to join his newfound companions at the table quite soon.

Gather info would be a longer term issue and among the townsfolk or entire tavern--typically over several hours, but I get the idea.
The burly dwarf looks unalarmed by the described events. "Bah, simple magics. Not so much as could stand to the blade of a good axe."
In response to the Gimble's question, he looks around as if to see who might be watching and says in a somewhat surprised tone, "You don't know who Kordrin Braxtor is? Well, he is none but the eldest son of Baron Braxtor himself--the man who fancies to run this town. And he's a racist, lazy, loudmouthed, cowardly son of a cur if'n you ask me. And he's always hiding behind his 'guard' detail." Realizing he has reacted rather strongly in the presence of people he knows none to well he controls himself and says, "ahem, but let's say you didn't ok? Not that I have anything to worry about." He says the last somewhat more confidently. Clearly he feels at home in his own extablishment.

It seems she was doing the same in return and you notice her smile ever so slightly as your vision connects. You both look quickly from one another and continue about your business.
As you looked you noticed no symbols resembling those you had seen. That said while she is dressed as a simple innkeeper, she clearly holds herself with more confidence than you would expect. While appearing relaxed, she seems also like she is, for lack of a better term, coiled and ready to spring into action. You notice a slightly out of place bulge on her right thigh under the flowing coat she wears.

Xanros Duskwalker |

Xanros throws his backpack over one shoulder and walks out of the room. From the top of the stairs he can see his companions took a table in the back next the the wall, good out of the way.
Xanros walks down the stairs and heads over to their table, nods to Rasmus and take a seat facing Rasmus with his back to the wall. Xanros look quickly around the room developing a plan in case thing go bad.

Xanros catches the smell of Ramus's tea in the air, "Not much for the strong stuff? I try to avoid it if I can, dulls the senses but a little mead never hurts." As the serving wench walks over he says "Could I have some mead for me and my friend here." As the girl leaves to get it Xanros adds to Rasmus "Don't worry it isn't that strong and you should like it."

Spot check if it applies 5 + 6 = 11
Looking around you see 4 obvious exits from the room: the front door, the stairs you just came down from the second floor, a door behind the bar on the south wall about 15' east of your current location that you would guess leads to a kitchen, and a door on the east wall leading to an unknown location. There are no windows on this floor though there were two that you know of on the second.

Rasmus Fjolfsvang |

"Thank you, my friend, for the thought," Rasmus smiles as he says to Xanros, "but I must admit, albeit embarrassingly, that I have never before tasted the beverage you just ordered for me. Not much around at the convent at which I was raised. Perhaps, I shall try a taste."
Rasmus' spirits rise now that Xanros has joined him. His loneliness dissipates rather quickly once company arrives. "So, Xanros, where do you think we should start our search. I must say, I know not enough of this town...any town, for that matter, to speak decidely about a course of action."
When the serving wench returns, Rasmus orders some fresh fruit and figs, once again unaware at the apparent oddness of his request.

Guudwyn Valoenus |

Guudwyn walks into the Axe & Anvil with the rest of his companions. The dwarf greets them and some of his companions reply. He feels that no comment is necessary so does not speak just nods his head to accept the invitation. Then he picks up on some information that does interest him.
The burly dwarf . . . looks around as if to see who might be watching and says in a somewhat surprised tone, "You don't know who Kordrin Braxtor is? Well, he is none but the eldest son of Baron Braxtor himself--the man who fancies to run this town. And he's a racist, lazy, loudmouthed, cowardly son of a cur if'n you ask me. Realizing he has reacted rather strongly in the presence of people he knows none to well he controls himself and says, "ahem, but let's say you didn't ok? Not that I have anything to worry about." He says the last somewhat more confidently. Clearly he feels at home in his own extablishment.
'Baron Braxtor & his son Kordrin', he thinks filing those names to memory, 'so these two are the main causes of the woes of Barren Falls. I must find out more. Their deaths will cleanse this place.'
Guudwyn comes out of his reverie and joins Rasmus at the table he has chosen. When the waitress arrives, Guudwyn does take a silent offense to the word wench, he orders a light meal of bread and cheese and graciously accepts Xandros's offer of mead when he arrives.
Then he turns to Rasmus, "Shall we stay here and plot our next course? It seems the dwarf is no friend of the powers that be. Have you thought about our next course? I will be happy to aid you in your quest, brother. May our longswords cut sharp and swiftly." Then Guudwyn thinks, 'Rasmus may just be the type of person that I am looking for. Maybe fate has intervened. I must find out more about his heritage though. I have never seen the likes of his race before. I must find a delicate way to inquire. Not that it matters. He does follow the Invincible One. But it would be helpful to know more about my companions, and since I am helping Rasmus, I should start with him. Maybe he is a ...'

That will be part of it. As a result,
For Guudwyn:
The serving woman returns with the mead, asks if the others would like some, and pauses a moment when asked for the fruit. She then chuckles a bit and says, "If you want fresh fruit you might have to run to the market to get it, but I'll see what we have. This is more tavern than restaurant and meat is the normal main course." Though amused, she takes care to not be overly insulting. She seems simply to be surprised with the order which is at such odds with the pseudo-seediness around you.

Gimble Turen |

"Thank you. Like I said I'm new to the area and don't know much of the powerful locals."
I then walk over to the table where Rasmus and Xanros are sitting and in a whispered under tone ask "What now? Do we leave town, look for a cult of Pelor (said with a sneer), or try to take down the Baron and his son?"

Xanros Duskwalker |

"What now? Do we leave town, look for a cult of Pelor (said with a sneer), or try to take down the Baron and his son?"
Xanros smiles at Gimble's obvious dislike for religion, he nows how he feels. What did the gods ever do for him, his parents are still dead and whole countries are killing and torturing people. Although he has to admit that healing prayers are kind of nice in pinch.
Xanros clears these thoughts while a small shake of his head, "Before we decide to assasinate the towns leader maybe we should try to find out if anyone is even looking for Rasmus. He might have not even been in that temple, he could have been half way across the country before he appeared here."
Xan leans back in his chair and scans the room out of habit for any danger and then leans in again. "I am sure the commotion in the square this morning will blow over unless it was part of a bigger scheme, in which case we should be able to find out whats going on"

Rasmus Fjolfsvang |

"That is a very good point, Xanros, that I had not considered. I just assumed it was somewhere in this town as I was on my way here. The room I was tortured in was free of fenestration, as I am guessing most torture rooms are." Rasmus smiles. "Gimble, I heard the bartender mention 'recruiting missions for the temple', did he elaborate on this? I believe, despite our little friends apparant distaste for religions, we should track the Pelor worshiper. I am leary to start posing too many questions to the locals for fear of some retribution from more powerful citizens of Barren Falls. Also, as Xanros said, it may be premature to pursue the Baron and his son. I haven't even been privy to any crimes they have committed and I never attack innocents. Gimble, my friend, despite my adoration of the great Heironeous, I too have my reservations about organized religions. I respect others' beliefs however."
Rasmus hopes that his last statement eases his criticism of churches in Guudwyn's eyes. He may have let his years spent at the convent devoted to Wee Jas color his view of organized churches as a whole. He reminds himself to be fair and open in his judgements of others.
"Back on point, do any of you have any reservations about seeking out the Diran? Can anyone think of something that could be more beneficial?"

Guudwyn Valoenus |

As the illusionist sits down, Guudwyn has mixed feelings toward him. 'A conundrum I have here.' he thinks. 'He is willing to stand against the Baron, who is a definite enemy of mine, but he bears negative feelings toward the worship of Pelor.' Then Guudwyn starts thinking about the motives of his companions and potential consequences of their actions. 'If these followers of Pelor, assuming there is more than one, have a sanctuary for their prayers, they may be able to provide information or even assistance. I am not sure though, that I fully trust my comanions. If I cannot trust my companions, would it be wise to lead them to this potential sanctuary? Would the Children of the Sun even give us sanctuary? Would I want them to divulge their secrets? Their secrets would be safe with me, and I believe that I, and they, could trust Rasmus. What about the other three? I know nothing of Gimble and Boehler. Xandros has become a good companion, but there is vengence in his heart. If his revenge has a price, and my enemies can meet that price . . . Well, I know what dedication to a cause is like. Maybe only Rasmus and myself should look for the shrine to Pelor. We could gather any information that they are willing to give, then meet back here.'
As Guudwyn ponders these thoughts, Xandros speaks, shedding new insight on the predicament.
"Before we decide to assasinate the towns leader maybe we should try to find out if anyone is even looking for Rasmus. He might have not even been in that temple, he could have been half way across the country before he appeared here."
"Wait, maybe I have another idea. Rasmus, you mentioned that you went through some type of dimensional portal? Xandros is right. You could have come from anywhere. You may not even have an enemy in Barren Falls. Maybe we could go back to the place where you arrived. I could summon my divine energy to see if I can detect a magical presence" Guudwyn looks at his companions for thoughts, hoping that he can keep the followers of Pelor out of this so they can keep their secrets.

Gimble Turen |

"While it is true that I have no love for the gods, any of them I will not betray a companion. Reliable allies are too few for them to be discarded. However, if you wish I will remain here and pursue other goals while you and Rasmus seek out these religious fools. I also agree that we should look for any residule magic where Rasmus appeared. I too can look for the ethereal tendrils such a spell would leave behind."

Guudwyn Valoenus |

most of my last post was Guudwyn's thoughts noted by 'and'. Guudwyn only spoke the last few sentences noted by "and". In my PbP responses, I tend to put the character's thoughts down just to add story to the campaign and flavor to the character. I apologize for any misunderstanding.

Xanros Duskwalker |

Maybe we could go back to the place where you arrived. I could summon my divine energy to see if I can detect a magical presence" Guudwyn looks at his companions for...
"Going back to where Rasmus first appeared would be a good start. I don't think we should involve the Pelor followers yet, like you said they could help us but right now we really don't need help. We just have a strange mystery but on real enemy yet."
Xanros looks a the group and his gaze stops on Gimble "If we do find out that the enemy we face is more powerful than we can handle I say we put our feelings aside and take what ever help we can."

Rasmus Fjolfsvang |

"Very good idea. Xandros, Boeler, and I could stay back in the alley through which we escaped while Guudwyn and Gimble search the area for residual magic. Perhaps the door I came out of also acts as an entrance. This would be a very direct route to my torturers."
Rasmus takes his first sip of mead, ever. At first, it burns his black tongue with the acidity of the alcohol. Then, towards the back of his mouth, the bitterness of the drink hits. He doesn't dislike it as it is reminiscent of the tea Jean used to make from the acorns of the Eastern Black Oaks that lined the grounds of the convent. What Rasmus finds fascinating is the color the rich malts have given the ale. A deep reddish gold with bright highlights, the color of the finest spring heather. Mead does have its redeeming qualities after all.

Gimble Turen |

"I shall have no issues taking help from wherever we may find it. While I may no like them, I won't refuse theri help. Its like my gradfather used to say "Even if you don't like someone you can still take their money." He was a wise man." I begin eating what am I eating?, already considering the next step.

Rasmus Fjolfsvang |

Rasmus sips his tea, eyes his mead, and wishes he had a pomegranate to eat. An apple would be delicious as well. Then his thoughts turn towards his companions. I have just met this interesting group and they seem trustworthy but I have no idea who they are. The healing they've given me marks them as inherently good, but I have no idea of their pasts. Swirling one dark finger around the top of his mug he ponders how best to introduce the topic.
"Gentlemen, before we leave this establishment, perhaps you would feel more comfortable if I told you a little bit about my past and origins. I know that you have already agreed to assist in hunting down my captors, but I am sure you would like to know the basic information about who you are helping. I know that my appearance is somewhat...unexpected and that it can be unnerving to some. But before I relay my short story, I would be most rude if I failed to ask of yours. I believe that this out of the way table in this establishment would be safe enough to share some of our histories." Rasmus looks around to see if anyone is paying any attention to the group. spot check 11+1=12 "I know some of this may be sensitive material, but I believe we will be more secure if we all shared a little. I, for one, would like to hear more from Boeler as he has been particularly quiet since we first met. Who would like to begin?"
Rasmus looks around nervously to see if his words have offended any of his new acquaintances and wonders if his lack of socialization has doomed his journey from the start. He smiles somewhat sheepishly as he waits for the first to speak.

Crimson Conquest DM |

what am I eating?[/ooc],
As it is still early for lunch, the serving girl brings beef steak, chicken eggs, sharp cheese, and some mush. For those not eating meat, she also manages to find some fresh blueberries that were just delivered to go along with the eggs, cheese, and mush. The steak is tough, but edible and the rest is basic fare. The cost is 2sp per person.

Guudwyn Valoenus |

But before I relay my short story, I would be most rude if I failed to ask of yours. I believe that this out of the way table in this establishment would be safe enough to share some of our histories." . . . "I know some of this may be sensitive material, but I believe we will be more secure if we all shared a little. Who would like to begin?"
As Rasmus enjoys his meal, Guudwyn ponders the wisdom behind his words. 'Well, if these individuals are to be my traveling companions, then I will have to learn to trust them. Besides, I believe my secret is no more.'
Swallowing his latest bite and washing it down with some mead, he says in a low but steady voice, "I will begin. My name is Guudwyn Valoenus. I also" nodding and smiling toward Rasmus, "worship the Invincible One, Heironeous. I Travel from Crag, and my mission is to spread his word."
Guudwyn reflects on sharing this information. With an inward sigh he thinks, 'I may have said too much, but they would have discovered as much during our journey. This is what they now know. They do not need to know the rest.'
Guudwyn then thinks back to his teachings when he was a small child and recalls what he was taught regarding important secrets. Then, just realizing he overlooked something, he exclaims, "The child." Because of their quick departure, the boy's actions and unusual behavior slipped his mind. "We still do not know why that child was acting so strange, or why that child was there at the same time as you," he nods to Rasmus, "appeared. I believe that it is too much of a conincidence to be just that. Can anyone else add more information regarding the boy. It would be wise to sort through all of our information before returning to the scene to perform our magics." He looks to his companions as they eat their meal. Then he adds, "But we should not tarry either. The spells Gimble and I possess do have time limitations to unmask any magical emanations."

Guudwyn Valoenus |

"I am, as you have probably deduced, a wizard specializing in Illusions. I grew up in a small Gnome village a long way from here. I journey in search of information to combat an enemy that is best not spoken of and the freedom from my personal demons. I would prefer not to go into further detail."
Guudwyn listens to Gimble relieved to hear that he has a conscience and is attempting to become a better individual by meeting his personal demons head-on. The improvement of oneself is the first step to salvation. Salvation for one brings salvation to many.
Then he nods his head towards the gnome with understanding in regard to the importance of secrecy.

Boeler Widsend |

He looks up at Rasmus who is nearly double his height.
"My name is Boeler Widsend I travel with Gimble How did I meet him?to learn the knowledge and wisdom of the monks of old. I would try to help anyone in need and that is why I stand before you." "However,"
He looks around sternly. "I frown upon injustice and thievery and anyone who follows that path will not find me beside them." His face softens.
"but for now I must trust you."

Guudwyn Valoenus |

"I frown upon injustice and thievery and anyone who follows that path will not find me beside them."
Guudwyn smiles in acknowledgement of another excellent companion.
"Well met, Boeler. Our hearts seem to follow the same path" Guudwyn says graciously.

Rasmus Fjolfsvang |

"I, as Guudwyn, am pleased to find such good travelling companions. Surely we will be stronger together than alone. I am also honored to meet another faithful to Heironeous. It is through his blessing that I was found by you in that street. I believe the chances are slim that I would have exited on that road near any as honorable as the four of you, especially in this town."
Rasmus pulls back his cloak slowly, takes off his helmet, and smiles broadly. With a dark hand, he brushes back the even darker hair off of his forehead.
"My story, despite my rather dark appearance, is a short one. I was an orphan who was reared by the ladies in a convent devoted to Wee Jas in the mountains to the east. I was lucky enough to be taught by the gardener, the only man in the exclusively female establishment. His name was Jean and he was a heroic Paladin of Heironeous until a demon took his eyes. He trained me in the ways of battle and equipped me in his old gear. As you can tell by my obvious naivete, I left only days ago and this is my first trip outside the grounds of the convent. You may have noticed that my appearance is not consistent with a man of my faith, I understand that. Honestly, I know not why I look this way. It is the bane of my existance. I believe that The Invincible One has given me great power and that this darkness I outwardly emote is the challenge he has chosen for me to overcome. Be assured, my heart is pure."
Rasmus nervously rubs his hands together as he speaks, realizing that this is the first time he has told this tale. He anxiously looks to his newfound companions for their reactions.

Xanros Duskwalker |

Xanros nod as he listens to his companions tell their tales and when they finish he adds "As some of you know I grew up in a Dreskana military academy. For several years I just cleaned in the school but when I was old enough I trained and join the Dreskana Daggers, a squadron specializing in reconnaissance. For the last ten years I have been serving in the Dreskana Army as a scout and was released from active duty just last month."
Xanros look at his drink and subconsciously puts his hand to his chest and then continues, "I headed up here to deal with some things in my distant path and ended up here."

Rasmus Fjolfsvang |

"What I know of the child is very little. His face bore the expression of a man possessed, focused on none of his surroundings. In his hand he carried something metal and round. His parents watched him walk away and then left themselves. It was a very strange situation."
"As far as our next move, I think we should stick to the proposed plan and try to find residual magic from the dimensional door."

Rasmus Fjolfsvang |

Rasmus calls over the serving lady and pays the tab for the entire party, including a large gratuity, mentioning that it "is the least I can do." let me know the bill amount, please. He then stands and places his helmet back in its rightful place over his head. "Let's be off, then."
Once in the busy street, Rasmus reiterates the plan for Guudwyn and Gimble to go into the street while the other three stay back in an attempt to look nonchalant.
Under his helmet, Rasmus smiles a great smile in anticipation of taking the first step towards finding his captors and proving his worth to Heironeous. Vengeance is not his main goal, but stopping any evil is. Certainly, the thing that gave him hundreds of cuts, for no apparant reason, is a worthy target for eradication. He glances over his shoulder at his companions and nods subtly, acknowledging the fact that they will be a strong force indeed. This evil should pray to its wicked gods for solace...it, however, will find that there is none to be had.

Guudwyn Valoenus |

As Rasmus pulls out his coin pouch, Guudwyn puts his hand on his forearm, "You are new to civilization. There are a few good things to know. Hold on to your money. You never know when you will need it. Also, never display that you have any. Especially in a town like this." Then he pats him on the shoulder and walks out the front door. On the table where he was sitting is 2 silver pieces.
As he gets outside, Guudwyn, with hand on hips, takes in a deep breath and exhales. He has a mission, a goal. This makes him very happy. He smiles at the sky.

I believe it is mid to late morning. Depending on the strength of the aura from the dimension door, if we wait too long, we may not be able to detect any magic
It is only about 11am--late morning. There is still plenty of time for adventure in this day. :)
As a note the auras per PHB would only still be present, assuming it is a spell, if it is of overwhelming (diety level) power. Not to say that there is nothing to be learned by this course of action, but pointing out a fact.

When Rasmus gets to the location, he seperates himself from the rest and looks for a location with some amount of privacy. When/if he finds it, he lowers his head and prays to Heironeous for guidance on this path they have chosen.
Rasmus casts "Omen of Peril" ,CD p.171. Base Chance for correct reply=71%.
After he receives his vision, he lowers his head and rejoins Boeler. Rasmus believes, most certainly, that Xanros is accompanying them but not visibly. He thinks to himself, "With my dark skin, I should be able to hide as well as the elf. Perhaps this armor, while valuable in combat, is not made to be stealthy."
From around a corner, Rasmus keeps his red eyes on Guudwyn and Gimble, noting the extreme difference in size between the two.
