About Rasmus Fjolfsvang
Rasmus began this life delivered into the hands of a group of very devout nuns in a convent devoted to Wee Jas. This remote and ancient place was situated in the Redcast Mountain range bordering the elven lands of Lyranthul Kalana. Taken in by the Head Mother, Rasmus was seen more as a curiosity than as a son. His childhood was hard, his responsibilities at the convent grew each year. He received equal schooling as the young women joining the convent and learned much but was always viewed as an outsider. Harsh treatment became the norm and the strictest punishments were always levied on the “dark skinned boy”. Rasmus would have resented this inequity if he knew any other way. Instead, he would silence his tongue and smile broadly, persevering in his studies. He was drawn mostly to the teachings in the arcane and ethics, but found it hard to compete with the others in academics as the nuns required him to perform more and more of the physical labor. As a teenager, he was apprenticed to the only male presence in the convent, the blind gardener, Jean. This old horticulturalist adored Rasmus from the first meeting and relished this new solution to loneliness. Jean had a secret history as a fairly well known paladin before a Bulezau demon tore out his eyes. Unable to quest, Jean resigned himself to a quiet life in the mountains. Jean was a quiet follower of Heironeous and taught young Rasmus of the deity’s valor and just ways. Rasmus would supplement these teachings by spending hours at night in the convent’s large library studying the ancient texts. Most of the tomes were devoted to Wee Jas, but Rasmus always managed to find passages that spoke of Heironeous and his legend.
Jean also taught Rasmus the ways of war. Using the sword Jean had used as a young paladin in training, he taught Rasmus how to parry and counter. Rasmus learned faster than any pupil Jean had ever seen. It was almost as if he had been trained before. This and the fury with which Rasmus battled worried set Jean at unease, but their training progressed nonetheless.
When Rasmus turned twenty, Jean gave him three precious gifts, a chain shirt of good quality, a strong heavy shield bearing the symbol of his God, and a beautifully crafted helmet of deep blue steel. The chain and shield were old pieces of Jean’s collection that he had kept for nostalgia. The helmet had been commissioned by Jean for Rasmus and was of exquisite quality but, more importantly, would cover his devil tainted face. Rasmus was overwhelmed, not only by the generosity, but by the fact that he knew it was time to begin his own journey.
One week later, Rasmus said his overly polite farewells and stepped out of the convent gates, heading west towards Ildonia.
Despite his grey skin being tinted with red, his glowing red eyes, and the two short horns growing from his forehead, Rasmus emits an aura of calm and good. He smiles often and is soft spoken, except in battle when he cries out about the misdeeds of his foes. At times, his voice becomes otherworldly and the facts he relays about the tyranny of his enemy are crimes he has no personal knowledge of but are, nonetheless, very true.
