If I may chime in on the other hand...
The sulky teens who write annoying songs and bad poetry today will grow up all too soon. If they keep at their crapulent artistic endeavor (and are very lucky), it's possible they may become the inspired artists of tomorrow.
Furthermore, I envy them. It'd be nice if my biggest problem was still "I'm so misunderstood" and I look back fondly on the time when that was the case.
As far as I can tell, "Emo" kids are just Goth kids from my heyday who dress the same but listen to different music. It's not bad music so much as kinda derivative. But I only say this because I have the perspective to see that they're derivative, and it's one of the defining aspects of teenagerdom to lack perspective. As for their fashion sense, this is how I would have dressed in high school if my parents would have allowed it (we just called it "Goth" at the time). This is how I did dress in college (kind of a standout at the University of Idaho). And this is how I still dress now that I'm 30... at least as much as I can get away with (which is now nothing more extreme than a penchant for black attire).
I still find goth-chicks hot.
Once upon a time I would say, only half-ironically: "Black is what I wear on the outside because black is how I feel on the inside". Nowadays, it's closer to: "Black is what I wear on the outside because black is what was clean this morning."

"Black is what I wear on the outside so the bloodstains don't show"
I think I saw that on a t-shirt once.

Seconded. I don't see what's up with all the hate aimed towards them, teenagers dressing dreary and listening to angry music is nothing new- what annoys me is how fast people forget that they did the same damn thing when they were their age. My fiancee used to be goth, and zings me regularly with promises of whipping out the makeup for old times sake and yet never does. I hate her. :-P

Oh, that's right, I was in theater.

I was in theater, too, but I never got called *those names.*
I just got called crazy...

Yeah!! Cheer up you emo jerks! And all you gaming nerds, get out of your mom's basement and find a girlfriend!! You guys rolled a nat 1 on your diplomacy check! And don't get me started on LARPers, foam swords are for pansies.... What other groups of people don't we understand?
Yup, anyone want to bash the gays or the jocks? How about those cripples or the flaming liberals (myself included on the flaming liberal)?
I was too disgusted yesterday to post to this thread but it was a terrible day at the office and i've had a few beers, so here's a question for you all: Why in the world are you discussing this? Haven't you been picked on for being gamers at some point in your life? If not for being a gamer than something else? If one of these "emo" folks did you wrong, how about showing a little perspective and not generalizing the lot of them (whoever they are...i hadn't ever heard of the term until yesterday)?
If that's what everyone wants to talk about, so be it but, quite frankly, i'm dissippointed with many of the comments on this thread.
Carry on with the emo bashing.
As ever,

EMO is When referring to a person's personality and attitude, most definitions of emo hold that an "emo person" is candid about their emotions, sensitive, shy, introverted, broken-hearted, glum, and often quiet. Emo personality is also often connected with writing poetry, which addresses confusion, depression, loneliness, and anger, all resulting from the world's inability to understand the author.
Humn...interesting...it makes me wonder if Shake-spear(that's the coolest way to spell it) and the other famous poets were kinda depressed too. And why the heck do we study poems anyways...

Dude, most of us are just grown-ups having a gentle chuckle at teenage angst. I and many others have freely admitted that we acted pretty much the same way. We don't hate them. They're kids.
We're doing what people do when they see someone who takes themselves WAY too seriously. We laugh at them :)

It's good to study poems, man. It's a big part of what is great about being humans.

Relax a little. It is a very old tradition for the old to dislike the young. Think about it. You "hate" your younger brothers and sisters growing up. You made fun of the freshman when you were a senior. You made fun of high schoolers when you were in college. We all just finally grow up and look at a new fad and shake our heads and sigh. I think that most of us are just a hop skip and jump (then a broke hip) away from shaking are fist and screaming hey you kids get off my damn lawn.

Oh and I don't mind making fun of any and all people, plus I think the worst things that were said were that they write bad poety and are whinny. God they are so whinny.

Aw Ace, why is it that every time I start warming up to you, you've got to go and ruin it by posting stuff like this.
Here's the deal, we're (generally) all adults here. We all know that we are being a bit silly by posting angry little rants about emo kids. Most of the comments are in that silly vein. A few possibly go too far (though I'm fairly certain that the one you posted was intentionally over the top - c'mon man, he's posting on a D&D board and calling us nerds for playing D&D. He's either a serious troll or just making a joke), but for the most part it's in good fun. Cosmo stepped in to defend emo kids, and did so fairly eloquently. He got the tone back on track.
Then you go and post a self-righteous little snit fit about how we're being all mean and disrespectful, scolding us as if we're children. I apologize for not taking that scolding seriously, but, for lack of a better analogy, you're not my mom.
Remove the stick, have another beer, and chill the f!!$ out.

Yup, in many ways they sound like me when I was a teenager...which in itself makes whole "you cannot understand my pain" thing a bit silly. Been there, done that, t-shirt would be vintage item for eBay auction.
Besides, apparently Sunny Day Real Estate is regarded as proto-emo and I rather like their music.

I think Cosmo (I think it was Cosmo) put it brilliantly - teenagers lack the perspective that we ancient types possess. Certainly, when I had my angsty moments, my family ripped the piss out of me mercilessly - and I'm jolly glad for it, in retrospect. Self-pity, the stock-in trade of the emo, is an unappealing trait that needs to be beaten out of a kid (presumably figuratively in this day and age) - mockery is one of the best ways to do this.
And Ace, you nearly had Seb liking you - he doesn't normally like anyone - and you went and ruined it. Maybe you should write a poem about what has been lost.....

And Ace, you nearly had Seb liking you - he doesn't normally like anyone -
He likes me! Wow, whoa....ummm....
Anyway, Yes we all had our share of being maligned or made fun of. We either folded and conformed to the norm or we developed a sense of self and became who we are. Uncontested angst results in the angst-ridden "victim" trying harder and harder and doing more and more to gain attention to his plight which could end up being violent acts. By light-hearted ribbing we are giving the Emo-bags the attention they crave and validating the whole "noone understands me, mom, buy me My Chemical Romance's CD". Eventually they will get a grip on who they are and become unique individuals with, unfortunately, WAY too many piercing in really dumb locations.Ignore a child and they will scream until they are heard. Same concept here.

I was into Metal and everybody was freaked out by Satan and all; Black Sabbath/Iron Maiden #o't. Beast and all that stuff. Kids just gotta try and figure out how to freak out their parents. I am frightened of what my kids'll come up with.
That's why I got into D&D back in the Stone Age: we all heard that it would make us kill our parents and commit suicide, and said "Cool!" It didn't work, though, and we'd heard the same thing about Black Sabbath (every kid in school had a bootleg tape of that within weeks of the rumor appearing)... so of course we tried playing D&D WHILE LISTENING TO BLACK SABBATH! To this day, I don't believe there are any matricides, patricides, or suicides in our entire group, so that stuff must not be too bad for kids.

Dirk Gently |

One thing about emo is that it seems, at least in my town, that emo is not a "scene" so much as a label. Ask any kid if they're emo, and they're likely to say "no", regardless of how emo they seem to be. That said, there are some who buy into the label and make it their own, personal "scene" where being depressed is their cry for attention or expression of "individuality" (although how individual can you be by copying others?). Besides--everyone has their emo moments.

IMO, I think the "emo" kids today don't realize their parents grew up in a time where the bands were Alice Cooper & Ozzy Osborn. Seriously, after them, what parent is going to freak or be shocked by their kid wearing black eyeliner & mascara? All the rest is just teenage angst.
See, I was dangerously close to becoming emo at about age fourteen, but that was when I discovered The Metal. However, IF I became emo, your argument would not hold up for me, because my parents (aged fifty and forty-seven) listende to the likes of John Denver, Fleetwood Mac, Simon and Garfunkel, etc.
Sorry.

I've really never been attracted to goth chicks. Get a tan.
See, I'm quite the opposite. Goth chicks are like... my favorite EVER. When my wife wants me to do something that I really don't want to do (like fight off a horde of werewolves with nothing but a flashlight and harsh invective or, you know, mow the lawn or take her shopping or something), I will often come home from work to find her in the living room with this blood red lipstick on, knee-high black laced boots, a leather corset, and face powder on. It makes me die. It's so unfair.

I didn't say the parents listed to Alice & Ozzy, but I guarantee they knew they were around. My sister's son is 17, my sister listened to Loverboy, Madonna, Kenny Rogers, Alabama, etc. But if my nephew brought one of his buddies to the house & said buddy decided to wear makeup, my sister & her husband wouldn't blink an eye. More than likely, my sister would offer him makeup tips. (As for my nephew, he's coming thru the angst years nicely, we're so proud.)

.."emo persons" are likely to inflict self-injury, most often by means of cutting..."
So, if I had an EMO lawn it would cut itself? Cool. Where do I buy one? Wow, just think...no more lawnmower, no edging (being EMO would make it more than edgy enough, yes?), and the when the dogs take a dump on it, it just takes it another example of why it's justified in behaving that way? Amazing.
