Of the early yeahyeahyeah Beatles:

Dont Bother Me

Help

Twist and Shout (cover) but thats because of Ferris.

Ive Just Seen a Face in a Simon and Garfunkel vein.

then the mind expansion project takes hold of the fab four.
I love most of Rubber Soul. My favorite (non-compilation) album by them.

Norwegian Wood

In My Life

Run For Your Life scary song!

...and 'Eleanor Rigby' has been played WAY too much and covered by way too many ppl, but I still like that one...and the sentiment behind 'Taxman' is pretty much right on. 'Tomorrow Never Knows' is AWESOME!

Day in the Life the two best half songs joined together perfectly! I still like the 'how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall' line

The white album gets a lot of play. 'Back in the USSR' is a damn good song, but my favorite track off that monstrosity is:
Glass Onion

The guitar work on Happiness Is A Warm Gun and Savoy Truffle are awesome.

'Birthday' is awesome too.

...and although 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' is pretty dam amazing, I want to put my other favorite track off the double LP is Blackbird. This song is one that touches my soul.

Im skipping Abbey Road for a minute

Love I Me Mine and 'Across the Universe', though I did NOT like that movie.

Abbey does have the fun little ditty Maxwells Silver Hammer.

and then back to the one I think you should pick for your top-5 Beatle tune. Something is one of my all time favorite songs. Frank Sinatra said it was the greatest love song ever written.

My favorite Beatle was George.

"I've Just Seen a Face" was the one I had to cut to make five.

George was my mommy's favorite, too.

Favorite album is a toss-up between Rubber Soul and Revolver, even if Ray Davies thought the latter was rubbish.

Edited Addendum: Back in my used record store clerk days I got to read a lot of music mags for free, and, somewhere around 2003ish or so, SPIN ran an article about THE BEST BANDS OF ALL TIME, and, of course, The Beatles were #1 under the tagline "Your mom knew her shiznit." It also had a pretty good line in it trying to explain the Beatles phenom in 2000ish terms for the millennials: (from memory) "Imagine if NSync, after five years, had put out OK Computer" (or was it Kid A?)

...Ray Davies?!?!?! That man NEVER has a contrary opinion. heh.

I was in a record store in KC (Streetside R.I.P. *cry*) and was holding a non-priced 'Revolver' mono album in my grubby little hands that I spotted behind the counter. I asked the guy what he wanted for that one since I didnt have a copy on vinyl. He says '300$' and I quickly but gently laid that puppy on the counter and walked over to the used bins and got a 27th pressing or something for five bucks :)

I forgot 'Here Comes The Sun'. Thats another one I automatically hum when Im feeling blue. Though sometimes I slow it down for the GhostBC cover when Im feeling evil.

I went through a decade-long "If it aint METAL its crap!" stage and actively mocked all these pop bands.

Obviously I couldnt narrow it to 5 on the Beatles...Lets try Stones next?

...or The Who? or Yardbirds? ...or Dio? Though I dont know if I should link to just EVERYTHING that guy did. heh

Now, the Eagles would be easy for me. I bet I only like 2 songs by them. :) Though Jackson Browne and Joe Walsh solo stuff could fill out the 5.

heres a couple tracks for the weekend

Ronnie Foster - Love Satellite

SKYY - Call Me

Con Funk Shun - Ffun

Sun - Pure Fire

Indeep -Last Night a DJ Saved My Life

and the real video for Kids freaks me out! I actually thought the face painted people were the real band. Plus it has those people just dancin like they just dont care...

Yeah, it's wicked rad.

Getting further and further away from the Swedish tunez, but...

[Again, off the top of my head]

Favorite Stones tracks:

Let's Spend the Night Together

Favorite Who track:

Armenia, City in the Sky [bubble bubble bubble]

Favorite Yardbirds tune that shows up in a filmsnob movie:

The Train Kept A-Rollin'

My favorite Stones video.

Vive le Galt!!!

Oh yeah, I forgot:

In another moment of synergistic weirdiosity, after the Black Friday Wal-Mart protest, before watching the Mumia movie (see: Bride of Government Folly, if you dare!!!) my comrades and I had a big argument over The Beatles over a bowl.

Comrade Stefanie was on my side, even if Paul was her favorite.

Comrades Danny and Kate talked a lot of ignorant bullshiznit and I was much meaner to them than I was to Comrade Kirth.

Then we listened to "Tomorrow Never Knows" and Comrade Danny shut up.

Later, I had to apologize for being so mean.

Vive le Fab Four!!

[touhou]-Mamizou's theme: futatsuiwa from sado ~remix

We also had an argument about who was better: Bob Dylan or Phil Ochs?

"Are you f@~!ing crazy?" I asked. "Yeah, sure, Phil was the better left-wing activist, but that has nothing to do with music!"

Bobby D forever!

I don't know if it is my favorite Kinks tune, but this one always makes me cry, even if it is pretty far from anything that I believe in.

And, the original "Train" which I maintain rocks harder than The Yardbirds' or Aerosmith's version.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

That was ace.

Here's a version by Arizona Swamp Company with a boss riff, which they might have nicked from someone else. Not sure.

Late to the Beatles-fest, but my top five faves are:

1) Strawberry Fields Forever
2) And Your Bird Can Sing
3) Rain
4) Paperback Writer
5) I'm Looking Through You

My favourite Who track is 'The Kids Are Alright', my favourite Kinks track is probably 'Days' or 'See My Friends', my lucky stone is topaz and my turn-ons include zebra stripe prints and a negative quantity of coleslaw.

Because I'm now getting prog withdrawal symptoms, here's Mack Sigis Porter - Sunday in Neon Lights

I think my mum preferred John.

"Negative quantity of colesaw" hee hee!

Mayonnaise is disgusting.

From the Books Thread: My favorite Donovan track.

Now, I swear, no more posting (well, no more links anyway) until I catch up.

Edit for Limey: WARNING: DONOVAN LINK!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Favorite Stones: Midnight Rambler - live
Favorite Who: Bargain
Favorite Kinks: Hard to pick -- maybe Father Chistmas?

And, yes, mayo is indeed disgusting.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Favourite Who: Pinball Wizard
Favourite Kinks: Waterloo Sunset
Favourite cover of a Kinks song: Kirsty MacColl - Days

Beatles Top-5 - Today at least.
1. I Want You (she's so heavy)
2. I'm Looking Through You
3. A Hard Day's Night
4. Hey Jude
5. Eight Days A Week

I don't have a Stones favourite. They're good, but I've never really gotten into them, so instead something quite different: Edwyn Collins - A Girl Like You

The Sound of Young Scotland!

Oh gods... I'd managed to repress the memory of this. Darn Germans.

"I'm Looking Through You" seems to be quite popular with the Paizo crowd.

[Breaks resolution again, but I finished the first Swedish post (The Wannadies link is unavailable in the US), so: I'm Looking Through You: The Halloween Version]

Yeah, it's alright

That one was a big hit at the hipster dance club I used to frequent back when I was hip and had better things to do with my time than hang out on Paizo.com all day.

Favorite Britishiznoid Invasion band other than the ones already mentioned:

The Zombies

Just heard "I, Me, Mine" for the first time. Great song -- this might be Beatles #5 for me, if I like it as much after hearing it again.

Favorite part of the Fab Four argument with the comrades:

"After 1969, the Beatles went downhill fast."

"Yeah, well, seeing as how they broke up in '69....dumbass."

lolz. Of course the first few solo records were pretty damn cool too. George shot out a quintuple LP of stuff he had ready to roll but not allowed to put on a Beatles record (two LPs worth still unreleased). First McCartney and Lennon solos were sweet too...and then the 'other Beatles' --Badfinger and ELO. They took up where the fab four imploded.

and this scene is such a perfect use of 'Baby Blue'. Dont watch the link if you havent finished Breaking Bad.

Poor Ringo gets no respect.

In addition to "No No" (more for me!)

It Don't Come Easy
Photograph

Best explanation for the break-up of the Beatles I've ever heard: After five years, John finally met somebody he liked more than Ringo.

Space - Magic Fly

My Mine -Hypnotic Tango

Flirts - Passion

Two minutes into Space and I've already favorited this post.

EDIT: Rest of the post is pretty awesome, too. [Shimmies]

After a long weekend of Beatles, returning to what I love the best. Here's a kick-ass live track with Carlos Santana on guitar:
Mountain Cry
I could listen to this from now until forever and never get sick of it.

Duke Ellington on the necessity of shop stewards.

Also, Bud Powell on pirouetting (sp?) pagans

And Chico Hamilton, RIP

Raow! Raow!/Like a dungeon dragon!

In other news, I was amused this morning at work to watch one of my co-workers (middle-aged, Puerto Rican, female) try to dance a jig to The Fairport Convention.

"It's Irish music, right?"

Eh, close enough.

A young Haitain kid bellowing along with Mellow Yellow in a thick Creole accent.

He also got a huge kick out of Sly and the Family Stone making use of the "Frere Jacques" melody in "Underdog."

More Beatles tunez for Kirth

And classic rock question for the thread: who does that "Can't you see, can't you see, what that wo-man's been doing to me?" song? Skynyrd?

Nevermind.

And then the All Clear sounds and it's safe to come out, picking over the wreckage of our homes as the Donovanwaffe retreats back over the North Sea.

Those Tribe Called Quest videos were fantastic, so thankyou DA and DN. Lots of fun sample hunting, too, since I haven't been at work, which has led me to Weldon Irvine and the Michal Urbaniak EDIT: Band.

Also, a very good Malaysian record by Hussein Ismail and Siglap 5.

And one by a band from Singapore called The Bee Jays *snigger*. There appear to be a few bands called The Bee Jays, one of whom does erotic versions of Bee Gees songs. Good work, chaps, but no links for you. Standards must be maintained, and we don't want to over-excite the goblins on a weekday evening.

Funk for Fridays

Little Milton--"We're Gonna Make It"

James Carr--"Pouring Water on a Drowning Man"

Leon Haywood--"I Want'a Do Something Freaky to You

Ike & Tina--"Mojo Queen"

And one I posted in the Gender Politics thread: Eddie Floyd--"I'll Take Her"

Nice! Ill post some more funk tomorrow. Its too dam cold...though thoughts of Miss Tina warm the cockles of my heart (or something).

I was going to guess either Grand Funk or Manfred Mann on that classic rock lyric.

Sovereign Court

Favourite Stones track is probably this one, which probably marks my card as a sentimental duffer.

I've been listening to all of my accoustic metal with proper metal vocals lately. It's pretty awesome.

Mind you, the originals are pretty good anyway

This also turned my mind to my favourite split EP of recent years.

My brother told me that, given my dislike of the Beatles and love of Mototorhead et al., I should try Beatallica. I was nonplussed at first, and, on the whole, slightly underwhelmed.

Blackened the USSR. This is about the only one of Beatallica I like.

Hee hee! That was amusing.

That live footage is pretty neat, but Miltie really needs to learn to sing into the mic because, imho, you don't get the full-on gospel roar in such glorious lines as "IF WE HAFTA STAND IN THE WELFARE LINE!!!"

Like so.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Love that Leon Haywood track too...sounds like something Dre would sample.

D Train - Youre the One for Me

Billy Preston and Sly Stone - Cant She Tell

Kenny 'Jammin' Jason and 'Fast' Eddie Smith - Can U Dance

The Congos - Fisherman

GeraintElberion- Love the original Nostromo track (thanks for the new band to dig around in). Usually cant get with the symphonic or unplugged renditions of METAL tracks!

as far as loud and mean songs, recently Ive been listening to:

Prong - Snap your Fingers Snap your Neck

Machine Head - Davidian

Megadeth - fff

Voivod - Warriors of Ice ***EDIT: Voivod has a new record out. hmmm. merry xmas to myself :)

...speaking of xmas. My favorite holiday song!

drunken_nomad wrote:

Prong's Beg to Differ was released during them.

I worked in the warehouse for a prominent area record store chain for a year and I had a female supervisor named BJ.

For a class enemy, she was rather fetching.

Addis Black Widow - Innocent
Addis Black Widow - Goes Around Comes Around
