Dragon Lairs (Kings of the Rift)


Age of Worms Adventure Path


The group I'm DMing for has nearly finished Kings of the Rift, and they plan to go to the lairs of the dragons they killed to get their hoards.

Have other groups done this?

What suggestions do you have to make this interesting?

My first thought is that all these dragons are under orders from Dragotha, and it would be rather amusing if Dragotha has already appropriated all the treasure from their lairs and added it to his own pile (helping it to achieve the immense proportions as listed in the next adventure).

But then, I'm of the opinion that at this point in the adventure, the PCs should be more focused on stopping the Age of Worms than they are on making a profit.


Isn't there a section of the Wormcrawl Fissure called Brazzemal's Roost or something like that? Maybe their lairs/loot could be located there? It's not very well fleshed out as I recall but it'd fit nicely into the campaign.

There is: Brazzemal's Aerie. I'm suspecting my PCs will go there under similar suspicions of an unguarded hoard. In this instance, I'll come up with a "mate" for Brazzemal, still guarding a family. My idea is, maybe, a hellfire wyrm, with half-fiend wyrmlings...or something. Altogether, enough of a challenge to warrant a dragon hoard.

The idea of visiting the dragon's lairs could be both time consuming and rewarding. Prior to getting too deep into Wormcrawl Fissure, there's not really that stringent of a time frame. If the PCs desperately want to visit a dragon's lair, think of one you would like to make into a sidetrek, flesh it out with a decent--but reasonable--hoard, and if the PCs get greedy, and decide to visit them all, point out how other "quicker" adventurers beat them to those respective hoards. After all, where there are dragon hoards, adventurers can't be far behind.

How would they know where their lairs are? One of the dragons came from the Griff Mountains, another from the Nine Hells, one from near Wraith Keep, & Brazzamel from the Wormcrawl Fissure. What makes your players think the other dragons have lairs anywhere near a city full of giants who HATE dragons?


Pile all the "little" dragons' hoards together in Brazzamel's Aerie and go with the above, wonderful suggestion for guardianship of same. Make sure any of them who can cast 2nd level or higher spells know wraithstrike and breath weapon substitution spells at the minimum, to prevent one spell per character from thwarting all the baddies' fun. Oh, and the baddies' are likely to be wearing and using any and all useable items from those hoards - make the characters earn their swag.

EDIT: And let us not forget scintillating scales, to even out that pesky low touch AC as well.


If your players pursue that course of action, then the Age of Worms is over, IMO. The time from the recovery of the phylactry to the coming of Kyuss is intended to be a matter of DAYS. I doubt Kyuss will put his return on hold while the players travel the known planes gathering up dragon hordes. Personally, I would try to impart a sense of urgency in completing the remaining two adventures first. Once they've saved the world, then they can go horde hunting.


While any of the above comments are valid (and I'm inclined to agree with RatPunk), I would also add that at this point in time, the dragon hordes, even if found, might be inconsequential to the outcome.


Though it might be fun to hunt down those dragon hordes, I plan on making it clear that not only do the PCs have no idea where to start, but also that such an endeavor would be the equivalent of abandoning the Age of Worms in pursuit of treasure. I don't plan on allowing the PCs to claim those hordes, and I'll make that clear in some roundabout manner.
