When I've pitched them I usually write a very brief description of what about a monster I want to cover, maybe mention the sources I'd be drawing upon if relevant (to show I knew enough about the critter to warrent writing the article), and maybe an idea of why I thought the monster in question deserved to have an ecology article on them.
I just tossed queries for six critters the other day, but they'll likely be waiting till the next round of query bloodshed rather than the current round.
As for ELH critters... there's a risk I think of finding a critter that you think is cool and have cool ideas for an ecology article on them, but for whom there's hardly an audience for the article. Ecology articles on monsters that might never show up in X % of campaigns are probably less attractive than monsters that have cool hooks and are more likely to see play time in the average game.
I tend to pitch a lot of outsiders, but I have to keep in mind that realistically it's somewhat self limiting because there's only so many outsiders or extraplanar critters that are likely to get ecology articles written, rather than more mundane monsters. Still, if one or two get a green light, even at the expense of dozens of others, it's still a rewarding process.

well, looks like your approach worked then, Mr. Ecology of the Keeper. ;)
i've been wanting to query on this as well, perhaps to break up the monotony of the editors going "oh wow, look, BOZ and Shade want to do another set of monster conversions, how exciting" ;)
if i get my act together, i'll be sending that before the end of Feb at least. :)

we try. :) in the meantime, you've got our Creature Catalog website.
Of course, one of my favorite resources.
I've decided to just e-mail my query with each monster given a two sentence description of what I hope to do with it. And so we shall see if I will author any ecologies in the future...
