Correct me if I'm wrong, but there hasn't been a Core Beliefs article about St. Cuthbert yet has there?

Nope only Boccob, Olidammara, Pelor, and Wee Jas.

Thanks. That's what I thought.

I have players who are a cleric and a paladin that are trying to decide between Pelor and St C for the STAP and I'm trying to help them with the research.

Are there any issues of Dragon anyone is aware of that does have some more information? I've already checked out the paladin article in 306.

Try the Living Greyhawk Gazzeteer. There's also a trio of 2E modules where Greyhawk's temple of St Cuthbert figures heavily (WGA1-3: Flames of the Falcon, Falcon Master, & Falcons Revenge). The modules include a cardboard model of the temple of St C.

Also, try the Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Cuthbert_(Dungeons_%26_Dragons)

i actually remember being a player in at least one of those falcon modules, and yes i remember a strong cuthbertian presence. in fact, i think the DM had a paladin of cuthbert NPC travelling along with us. :)

Well... purely from a plot-viewpoint, Pelor's probably a better choice between the two since there's more going on with Pelor this time around than with St. Cuthbert. Not a LOT, but some.

Those modules are single-handedly responsible for my poor opinion of St. Cuthbert. Those goofy giant beagles just did in any respect I might ever have for the guy.

Very interesting...I've only read through "Here there be Monsters" so I look forward to seeing this development. Thanks!

Heh. These weisshunds, as I think they have been called, are indeed somewhat cheesy. But otherwise, these three adventures were not that bad. The "stunted giant" running a tavern was a very nice idea, and the way the dragons were included was good, too. Some of the dungeons were not that good integrated into the adventure (I think of the derro here). The Paladin of St. Cuthbert was a central NPC of these adventures. As a whole, the Cuthbertians were too good to be true, they were modeled after an highly idealized christian (and pacifist) priest/monk role model. I personally see St. Cuthbert somewhat more agressive than that, and they ignored the cuthbertian factions for the most part IIRC (chapeaux, billets and stars - these were introduced in earlier GH products).

maybe this was a weird faction of st cuthbert?

Well, the high priest of St. Cuthbert was the one mentioned in the City of Greyhawk Box, one Eritai Kaan-Ipzirel. She is described to wear green robes (which points to her being of the star part of the priesthood), but nothing else points to details of the faith. Indeed, the whole adventure would work as well, if not even better, if Pelor was the god involved here. Another priest is described as caring for the poor living in a slum - again, this could be a Pelorian as well.
But this may just be another instance of Greyhawk details being summarily ignored or handled casually by writers - nothing new...
