Where to bind magazines?

Dragon Magazine General Discussion

Does anyone here bind there magazines into hardcovers?
Where do you send them off to? I'm looking for no more than $60 a volume.
Do you know what method of binding is used (ie: notched gluing or oversewing).
Is there enough margin for oversewing?
Cheers guys,

well, you will probably loose a good 1/8 inch of magazine with about 1/4 to 5/8 being unusable. What is done is they line up the magazines as best they can and put them in a book vice; saw off the bind edge; then saw a crisscross or straight line pattern into the sawn edge; then put a type of string in those slots; then a binding glue is added then a type of book mesh which is clothlike; and attached to the hardcovers; mostly when I worked at the library during college this is how we repaired books or made collections like this; you could easily do it yourself if you go buy the binding supplies. Just try it out on some other magazines like National Geographics, as they seem to lie around everywhere, before you do the ones you want to keep.

There is an alternate, cheaper meathod of after binding; drilling holes in the sides; you loose more magazine this way; the cheapest of course is to take them to a 3 hole punch; some places have them big enough to do several hundred pages at once; and then put hole protecters on each hole in each page and put them in a loose leaf notebook; this is often the best meathod for dragon or dungeon magazines as notebooks will open flat and lay upon a table; alternately, after opening the magazines and separating the pages; you could put them in page protectors so you dont have to put holes into your magazines. This also has the benefit of having plastic protect your pages and you can often write on them with dry erase if you want or need to for gaming.

hope this helps.

Thanks for the info, it's much appreciated.
I think I'm committed to getting them bound as hardbacks though. I love the look of magazine volumes in libraries. Do you know where your library used to send their magazines to have them bound?
Cheers,
Sam

There are actually several local places in town that do it; I dont know of any chains though so wouldn't be much help for your area; you certainly dont want to ship them due to the weight and all. In our phone book they are right under the heading bookbinders; try to find one locally and save $$

here is two of the six posted that has a web addy:
nmbookbinders.com
WWW.atgbooks.com

glad to be of help.
