Anybody know how many cultists are supposed to be in area 3 of the Citadel of Hextor?


This question seems to pop up every few months...

I used nine human 1st level commoners wielding longspears and wearing leather armor. They arrayed themselves to guard the passage leading deeper into the temple (readied action to set against charge), shouting fervently that the PCs are unlawfully invading their private sanctum.

They didn't last long.

That particular encounter occured after the party made lots of noise from fighting the skeletons, so I had nine of them (1 1/2 times the number of party members, beefed up to 1st level fighters) in the chamber. Six were setup in a 2x6 column five feet away from the door, while others were waiting near the walls out of sight.
The battle took awhile, and was still easily done thanks to liberal placement of summoned monsters and the ardents energy ray powers.


The EL listed is 3 and if you check the encounter with the skeletons in area 2 it is the same. An EL 3 composed of CR 1/3 individuals translates to 8-10.

I should crack open the DMG more often :P


Pathfinder Battles Case Subscriber

Personally I would make it 4 commoners and have them jump on the PC's blades shouting curses and prayers. There's plenty of tough fights in that area, no reason to sap more resources with a dozen cultists.

It would definatly make for an eye opening experience when they take their readied actions to impale themselves on the PC's blades. :)
