Hey there Everybody,

I thought I would start a thread where you can give me some ideas for what you would like to see in future Item Card sets. Beyond the first two, we start to include some crazy items (like a unicorn's horn, a shrunken head), and I would love to hear what items you want to see.

I wouldn't mind seeing some unique items. By that, I mean items that have only one (or a few) incarnations. For example: a Dragonlance, a dragon orb, the Hammer of Kharas, Keryvian, the Artblade, a holy avenger, etc. For that matter, a setting-specific set would be pretty cool, too. Load it up with items unique (or at least flavorful) to a particular campaign world. I do like the idea of off-the-wall things, but the temptation to get grotesque is strong. A wide selection of jewelry would be nice... Rings, bracelets, bracers, gauntlets, gloves, belts, hats, goggles, cloaks, etc. I know I'm rambling a bit, so I'll stop now. I hope this is helpful.

-cultural/historical artifacts or religious relics such as goblets, tablets, documents (non-magical scrolls), holy symbols, pottery, etc.
-arcane foci
-specific material components (anything from gems to body parts)
-exotic weapons
I might post more ideas later.

-masks
-helmets
-crystals (think psionics)

One thing to keep in mind: as part of the GameMastery line, we're avoiding specific items that might be tied to any one system that would limit utility. So, for example, "the One Ring" is off limits, but "a magic gold ring with inscribed runes" is A-OK.

Thanks Vic, that is a good point I overlooked. Super specific items are out.

Ummm...the cool ideas got mentioned already...

Fighting with regular expressions and Apache's mod_rewrite module sucked out my creativity. :O

Oh, oh! Original holy scriptures. Imagine heroes finding and carrying ancient scriptures that are parallel to our world's Dead Sea scrolls or lost gospel of Judas!

More items:
-a golden idol in the shape of a head (gee, where did I get that idea from?)
-strangely marked stones
-items that just so happen to resemble similar artifacts found in various RPG games
-a rabbit's foot
-a monkey's paw
-squid-like tentacles attached to a rod
-demonic statuette (Pazuzu perhaps?)
-lovecraftian tome
-leather journal of some scientist, explorer, etc.
-deck of cards
-distinguished gold coins (think Pirates of the Carribbean or some sort of lucky token)
-maps of a continent, world, island, nation, building, etc.
-compass that doesn't point north! ;)
-any series of wind-up/clockwork/mechanical tools (I don't want to list anything specific, but Song and Silence has some greate ideas)
-mirror with runes along the frame
-dragontooth/claw daggers
-dragonskin leather bags
-dragonscale armor
-jars of unidentifiable matter
-meteoric rocks
-bardic instruments
-a horn (alas, poor Boromir)

Point taken. I apologize for my earlier suggestions.

-Musical instruments (think bagpipes of doom and despair!)
-Travelogues/journals
-Art objects
-Mount related items, e.g. barding, tack & harness, magic horseshoes
-Racially unique items, those with racial iconography or flavor
-Masterwork/magical tool kits
-Disguise/forgery tools
-How about a bag of holding or Heward's handy haversack sleeve/cardbox that you can actually put your other item cards in? No more arguing about what a PC is carrying and where...

Some of those are d20 specific. These cards aren't designed to be for any particular game system (note the lack of a d20 logo).

Material components for spells. That should give Gamemastery several series of decks for us to consume.

All the ideas posted are really great ideas (and I would buy them all up as they came out too), but how about something a little different, like modern sets!!

My group plays both fantasy and modern games, we currently use Item Pack 1 items and love them. We would love to bring this same feel into our modern game as well.

Just some thoughts,
Kevin

Goggles...lenses...glasses....all curously absent from previous lots but they seem to end up in every adventure

Helmets, masks, hats, shirts, vests...the weird clothing items...

Musical instruments. Give the bards their bones.

Double weapons...also present in almost every published adventure....

Figurines

Other jewelry that hasn't been done yet...brooches, bracelets earrings, armbands.

Not items but very possibly useful....familiars, animal companions, summoned animals.

Dorjes...if people don't like the selection of wands....

You're right, of course. At the same time, I think the backpack/trunk/chest/wagon team idea has merit, whether it's d20-magical or mundane and setting-generic. Unusual musical instruments (enchanted or otherwise) is also something I'd like to see.

I think someone mentioned exotic weapons, but I would like to be more specific. Of all the exotic weapons I think the most common ones are :

Dwarven Axe
Bastard Sword

So, I would like to see those first.

How about familiars?

Something I looked specifically for but did not find in the card lists...

keys.

Really cool looking keys would be nice.
Every dungeon has a spiffy key that the players find, right?

Paizo Employee Chief Creative Officer, Publisher

Keys is a great idea.

This is a very helpful thread. Keep the suggestions coming, folks!

I love the idea of spell components, especially the power components mentioned in Unearthed Arcana. If my wizard could have a page of component cards (the expensive ones, natch), it would make it much easier to keep track of!

Containers. Bags, pouches, backpacks, quivers.

Perhaps racially-themed items? For example, if you have a longsword, an elven longsword does not appear the same as an orcish one.

Dark Archive Contributor

Oo! Oo! I've got some ideas that will undoubtedly be unpopular! (Yeah, I know, what else is new?) :D

How about a blank card? Or blank cards (one for each of the different background treatments)? I know the coating makes drawing on the cards difficult, but that's for the DM to work out.

How about items usable in a modern/future game? Nothing obvious like an AK-47, but, you know, modern-looking backpacks or items that might be made of plastic?

And more items with an Asian look! The katana was nice, but give us more! Robes that look like kimono, monk weapons, a set of armor that looks like samurai armor, and so forth.

There are some wicked numchucks in the Relics of War expansion. :)

Liberty's Edge

A hand of glory (if that is not too macabre)

Paizo Employee Chief Creative Officer, Publisher

It's not too macabre. It is, in fact, coming soon.

--Erik

Liberty's Edge Contributor

Oooh, fun thread!!!
How about...

-a music-box, jack-in-the-box or other toys
-a cornhusk doll or other creepy dolls
-a tattoo needles and inks
-a shovel or other types of tools
-hanging windchimes
-seafaring tools like a spyglass or sextant
-a pipe
-a set of fingerbones
-dice
-a lock or a set of manacles
-a birdcage or a leash and collar
-a whistle
-a riddle or puzzle (you should do a whole deck of riddles and puzzles)

I second these ideas:
- instruments -
- crystals (maybe three that may or may not resemble certain shards from a popular settings) -
- nautical equipment -
- figurines -

And then maybe these:
- rope -
- flasks (alchemist fire, holy water) -
- lantern -
- mug or tankard -
- torch -
- waterskin -
- caltops -
- candle -
- bastard sword -
- rapier -
- kukri -
- hand crossbow -
- guisarme -
another:
- robe -
- scimitar -

That's all I can think of right now, but love this product. Hope we will be able to buy specific bundles of cards online as advertised in another forum.

Argh! I need it now for a hand of the mage. I'll just use one of the amulets or necklaces I guess.

Hey i think it would be cool to include cursed items

Who said the items aren't already cursed? ;)

I second the musical items. Also plenty of Crystals and Djorjes, crystal-laden armor, etc so we have something a little more "in-character" for Psionic Items, sorry, I mean "non-game-specific-items-charged-with-mental-power" ;) I dare say that for some they are a necessity.

Hello everyone,

This thread is really coming along great. I might not have to make any decisions on the next set at this rate. That said, I think everyone here will be pleasantly surprised with how many of these suggestions are already slated for one of our upcoming sets.

Jason Bulmahn

I'm sorry to say that I have very little interest in mundane item cards simply due to the fact that it would take years of regular releases to get close to a "workable" array of items; sure they'd have Thieves' Tools and "Backpacks," but how long will it take to get blanket, etc... besides, the $$ investment to get enough of them all would be *much* greater than it is for magic items and for (what I feel) is a much less interesting aspect of the game, hence, not worth the investment for me. I would also hate it if this product came out and it adversely affected the release of the magic item packs (which already seem to be having some availability issues... November?!).

P.S. reiterating my personal necessity of psionic-style items.

Some more macabre items:
-heart
-eye
-finger
-claw
-vial/bottle of blood
-tongue
-hair

I would defiantly like to see some items for the Shirt, Vest, Vestment Slot.

I would also like to see more Robes or Greatcoats and Long coats.

These items from There Is No Honor and The Bullwug Gambit are missing (several have been mentioned already):

Brooch, collar, rope, goggles, repeating crossbow, greatclub, slippers

Identification or travel papers to go along with the great/long/trench coats (black) for Eberron characters...

DeadHyena wrote:

Meh, I use scrolls for that. There's enough scrolls in my collection that can be used for such purposes.

These items are missing from Whispering Cairn and Three Faces of Evil (interesting overlap on the first three):

Brooch, goggles, rope, eyes, talisman

And as a personal request, more rapiers! There have been four in the Savage Tide so far (although the PC's aren't supposed to get one of them), and it would be a shame for them all to look the same.

I just wanted to drop by and thank all of you for posting your thoughts to this thread. We are _very_ interested in filling in all of the existing gaps (and coming up with some totally unanticipated cards, too), and you guys have been enormously helpful.

I am happy to report that the Item Card line is a success, and you should expect releases throughout 2007 and most likely into 2008.

Many, if not most, of the suggestions made to this thread will see release.

Thanks again.

I would like to second (or third) the suggestions for musical instruments & tools (lockpicks, etc.)
Also, how about the clothing/outfit packages, such as cold weather gear, courtier's outfit, artisan's outfit, cleric's vestments, etc.?
Lastly, how about item cards TEMPLATES? Item cards that can overlay other cards, such as "mithril", "adamantine", "darkwood", "silvered" & others that can be given with, say, a longsword card or a battleaxe card? (or a shield or armor card)

Kinda like the Hecatomb cards? That would be spiffy.

Cool idea. You might be able to achieve this with stickers.

Encounter at Blackwall Keep is covered, but The Hall of Harsh Reflections does not have these items:

Rug, mirror, morningstar, wondrous figurine (I'm looking forward to see what you come up with for these)

Champion's Belt is missing bastard swords, incense, and a magic spoon. Powder is a reasonable replacement for dust.

And Tides of Dread continues the rapier trend. One more on an enemy, and another on a Jade Raven. On the other hand, there is the Demon Fang for the Tooth of Ahazu. Well played, Paizo!

To build off the special materials ideas:

Dragonbone Composite Longbow

or things like:

Exotic Armors and weapons out of the Races books. (Mountain Plate, etc)

I completely understand that these are system independent item cards. However, it is silly to pretend that we don't want them to closely resemble items from the games we play. For that reason I will use d20 specific items in my discussion with the full understanding that the names may need to be changed (Waraxe instead of Dwarven waraxe, etc.).

I would like to see:
A ring with a feather motif (ring of feather falling)
A magic vest (vests of resistance are very popular in my game for freeing up that cloak slot, especially for Sorcerers)
A belt with a closed fist or bull motif (belt of giant strength)
A simple rope belt (Monk’s belt)
Gloves with a cat motif (gloves of Dexterity)
A headband with a book, fox, or eye motif (headband of Intellect)
Sturdy looking gauntlets (gauntlets of Ogre Power)
Dragonhide armor of various types - hide, banded, half-plate, and especially breastplate and full plate (this better be in Dragon's Hoard!)
A brooch (brooch of shielding)
More robes of various types
Potions with motifs that resemble common potions: bear, bull, cat, eagle, fox and owl for buffs, snowflake (cold), flame (fire), and lightning bolt (electicity) for energy protection, armor for mage armor, etc.

I would also like to see items for Druids such as a scimitar with a leaf motif, wooden armor, and a wooden shield with no metal accoutrements. A periapt with a woodland look would be welcome as well.

I like the idea of common spell focus and material components like a mirror or diamond dust. A holy symbol and sprig of holly would also be appropriate.

I also think that they need to recognize that there are armors that are simply superior in d20 and therefore more popular, specifically the chain shirt, breastplate, and full plate.

I'd obviously like to see at least one example of each weapon in the PHB (especially the non-exotic ones like morningstars and picks). I assume that the mundane items will be covered well by Adventure Gear.

A Rope Belt, A Robe with Eyes all over it, A robe with stars all over it... The list could go on if you just read a lot of the descriptions in the DMG.

I can't wait for the magic item compendium to come out. Not because I think it'll be useful as a book for me (I preach abilities, not items), but it may spawn more items card ideas!

Sure there are thousands of possibilities and I don’t mind a few really esoteric items like the severed hand or shrunken head. However, I would like to see them concentrate on the most commonly used items like gauntlets of ogre power, which almost any low level melee type will have, or the monk’s belt, which almost any mid to high level monk will have.

I would like to see close approximations for the magic items in the Dungeon Master's Guide as well as the forthcoming Magic Item Compendium.

I also echo the call for specific items from the adventure paths as well as other Dungeon adventures. Examples: The Sword of Aaqa and Lightning Sword from "A Gathering of Winds"

Thanks!
