In praise of the campaign arc

Dungeon Magazine General Discussion

Title is tongue in cheek :)

I just wanted to say I love these campaign arcs. I find them infinitely useful. In the "old days" I never ran one single module. Sure I owned a lot and ripped off ideas left right and centre. But I never played one. I would always prefer making my own from scratch.

Fast forward 14 years.

Now I work more time than I am at home and have two little kids as well as other family commitments I have ZERO time to make a adventure from scratch. I recently did do this since I had two weeks off. It literally took me two weeks to write it. I spent nearly every waking hour on it. Sure most of that is because I am a perfectionist. But its the same method I used as a kid.

Since I run a game every 2 weeks it would be impossible to do that consistently. So the campaign arcs make my life a LOT easier. So thanks Dungeon. And thanks to whoever thought of the idea.

As a suggestion. I would love to see an epic level adventure arc. I know not many people play epic level. Hell I stop all my campaigns at 20 and always have. Not into epic so much. But this is more because it’s damn hard making an epic campaign. Would love to see the folks at dungeon try their hand at it. Maybe level 20 to 30. More importantly I would be interested in seeing how the professional adventure writers handle it.

Something along the line of killing a tarrasque which can only be done with the wand of Orcus. Or running a kingdom ala the old 1e adventure Warlord. Sorry not very creative for the 20+ stuff. This is why I would love to see how other people handle it.

By the end of the third campaign arc there are going to be a lot of unemployed level 20s around. Give them something to do Paizo!
