If I could play in a D&D game run by anyone alive or dead?
I would play in a Ravenloft game run by none other than Edgar Allen Poe himself. It'd be one of those games where your CHARACTER might be passing his Horror and Madness saves, but YOU certainly aren't.
My second choice? Forgotten Realms run by R.A. Salvatore. I love his books.

James Earl Jones. Gotta love that voice. Henry Rollins would be cool, too. He's extremely intelligent and very animated.
Player: "OK, I'm trying to move silently past the red dragon towards the exit. Did it hear me?"
Henry Rollins: "Yeah, no problem. You're there."
Player: "Great! OK, I'm going to-"
Henry Rollins: "The dragon breathes fire on you, melting your skin and incinterating your bones! Ha!"
Player: "Hey! You said I got past him silently!"
Henry Rollins: "Sucker! I'm a liar!!! Ha, ha ha!!!"
Also, I think it would be fun having Bill Shatner as a DM. The guy's just cooky enough to make a great DM. Oh, and speaking of cooky... For a completely off-the-wall game that you never know what the hell is going to happen next I'd say Christopher Walkin.

Other than the creators of the game? Gygax/Kuntz/Arneson and all aside:
I agree with Matt_the_dm, Douglas Adams would have run an amazing campaign. Then again, so would Tommy Chong or Robert Plant.
Of fantasy authors I'd choose Tolkien, Harlan Ellison, or Stephen R. Donaldson.
Truth be told, I'd pay money to game with the Paizo staff. That's a lot of talent in one room. Hey, there's an idea to make some supplemental income. Offer up a weekend at the Paizo office for six to eight tourists at a time. Run this excursion only once a month so as not to interfere too awfully with already impossible editorial deadlines. Show the tourists the office, the work involved, and then run two gaming sessions, one Saturday night and one Sunday morning. Feed the tourists and give them drink (plus a humorous gamer shirt that marks the occassion), then send them on their merry way a few hundred lighter.
Then remember I gave you the idea and give me a freebie.

Truth be told, I'd pay money to game with the Paizo staff.
I am sure you would have to have a lawyer to negotiate copyrights for such a wild romp with the staff. They do this stuff for money.
I on the other hand make money to support my gaming. You are all invited to my compound for a marvelous weekend where all of your wildest dreams will come true!

Reading on, you'll see I suggested a price in the hundreds.
And as for attending one of your compound game tournies... I'd love to, Jail House Rock, but I guess my wildrest dream would be to have you sing the entire campaign in School House Rock parody.
Will we get a commemorative T-shirt?

Guys, seriously, is there any question??
Gary Gygax, you know the guy who created D&D?Who would be better, except maybe R.A. Salvatore for Forgotten Realms.lol but yeah there's aton of people who would be perfect,George Orwell, Howard,Anthony, But shakesphere?explain please...
EGG made my list--though some may have considered the choice too obvious to mention. I think a far shorter list would be "Who DOESN'T want to be DMed by EGG?"

I think it would be anyone but gary greygax, i've seen the poeple who gamed with him last yer after comiccon hee in toronto or whatnot and well the game was worthy for the fact they gamed withthe "maker" but otherwise not so much
who would i pick, george martin or terry brooks in the fantasy writer field, I'd love to play a game with George W., far too amusing even if we are fighting for victory bonds in the face of Al-queda
My Number one choice would be ShakeSpear, It will be entertaining to see the least

Hi All,
For an urban based swashbuckling game with magic: Steven Brust. His world is well developed and adventuring with Vlad Taltos would be cool. :-)
For a low magic, fantasy earth set either during the Crusades or during the Roman Empire: Thomas Harlan (check out Thomas’ Dragon short stories and his Oath of Empire series to see what I’m talking about).
For a Shannarra game: Terry Brooks though half the group would need to be descendents to make it work. ;-)
For high-octane space opera with everything but the kitchen sink (and maybe that too): Simon R Green using his Deathstalker universe.
For a cool sci-fi game: Frank Herbert for a game set in the Dune universe or William Gibson for a cyberpunk game.
For modern espionage action: JJ Abrams (Alias) or Nelson DeMille (Plum Island, The Lion’s Game, etc)
For modern day horror: Douglas Preston w/ Lincoln Child assisting (Relic, Reliquary, Feast of Crows, etc) or Brian Lumley using his Necroscope setting.
For a steam-punk game: China Mieville (Perdido Street Station and The Scar)
For modern action: Jerry Bruckheimer, just be certain to take a Fast hero with evasion for the inevitable explosion sequence. ;-)
For a completely off the wall Toon like game: Robin Williams, hands down. :-)
Love the thread,
Mark

-Just about any of the Paizo staff members.
-Stephen King
-HP Lovecraft
-JRR Tolkein
-Dave Arneson
-Adolf Hitler (I hate Hitler, but I'm curious to see what he would do as a DM.)

YES. I can picture Rollins saying that.
As for Walken... THIS IS NOT OVER.

I had heard that Roger Zelazney had in fact started playing some RPGs before his untimely demise. He wrote forever after and the Dilvish the Dammed series , after playing DnD. Which would explain the Elvin boots and cloak Dilvish wore.
Eric Wujik, either him running a game of Amber or TMNT would have been fun.
Anyone who had experienced something cool or unique. Mark Twain would be fun.
REH, Lovecraft might be interesting, but weird.

Glen Cook's my man. However, I'd ask him to tone down some of the most hardcore Black Company tendencies - after all, we would like to make it to a second session...
I'll sit in on that one. Heck, I could probably ask him - I think he lives a few miles from here. Wish I knew exactly where.
| Turin the Mad |
My good bud TheWhiteKnife is our DM. He does a great job.
But, after perusing the different campaign journals I think it would be interesting playing in a group with Killer GM or Turin the Mad at the helm. Those guys seem to run meatgrinder games and I bet it's a blast.
KGM and I are friends from when we were about 10 or 11. We still live relatively close to each other geographically, although the dread Real Life Monster greatly interferes with our ability to game with each other.
A rare few know to dread the two of us as players at the same table / in the same campaign. One of the KGM's current crop of players has had the misfortune of "handling" us.
MANY thanks for the compliment Spaetrice! Feel free to drop by the threads and post what ever floats to mind.
It is always fun to read stuff like this thread.
Heathy, I have to completely concur. If I could choose any one person as my fantasy GM, it would have to be Robert E. Howard for a Pathfinder / D&D game. The list of "close seconds" is extensive, but has largely been previously covered.
If I had to "settle" for some one living and famous, I would say Clint Eastwood. You just know that you'd only make a rules argument once - then get The Stare and just shut your pie hole. And the Gawds themselves help you if you interrupt him during flavor text readings ...

I'd actually wished that we could go back in time and see the games that happened with Cordell and Cook during the time where the Ptolus was getting its foundations made. I believe the Illithiad Trilogy was being sculpted at the time, too.
If I could say that if you are at all in the Central IL area, Mike Maholik (Washington area gamer near Peoria) runs a FINE Pathfinder game. More politics and intrigue than anything else.
