The Whispering Hotel

Age of Worms Adventure Path

I started doing the AoW campain with my group of friends last month, and we have just started the second installment. However, while my group was going through the Whispering Cairn, my brother (who normally doesn't play, but he was in town over break) suggests that the Cairn would make a good hotel or resort with a but of a tuneup. The beds are allready in place, the facilities need an elemental to be bound to them, but they are in place, some work on a elevator, and something to make the "Challange course" a little less deadly. However, my group thought the idea was awesome, and are now trying to impliment it. Any help on how I could handle this (either stopping them or letting them do it)?

Well stopping it is probably best. How many guests do they expect to get at a hotel that is a burial ground? I would say have the talk around Diamond Lake be unfavorable when news of it's contruction gets out. Also I don't think it's in an overly optimal location for a hotel being an hour out of town. Or the option is letting them do it and then have it ruined when Ilthane shows up. I think the whispering sounds throughout it would prevent me from staying there.

Liberty's Edge

It wouldn't surprise me if Allustan asked to be "let in as a silent partner" who could get things organized (hiring laborers, drawing up plans)while the characters are out doing other things. Meanwhile, while they're gone, he uses it as a cover to get the excavating done to the undiscovered area found in "Gathering Winds." Allustan is Neutral, after all. I don't think he would be above using the players' idea to further his own research.

When the characters get back, they might be concerned that everything they were building was ruined by the dragon, but what they find is that hardly any refurbishing has been done at all, because Allustan was too busy getting to the portal.

Once they rescue him, he may have some 'splainin' to do...

I suggest you let them do it. Retool the campaign to one of managing a hotel in a remote location where the main attraction is a walk through the nearby mines. Have them clean it up and recraft the elemental showers then start booking some guests and maybe even some events, perhaps a gaming convention. Really push the minutea of running the place. Challenge them to market the hotel and provide superb service to ensure repeat business, maybe they can even expand into a chain of fantasy hotels.

Okay, hopefully they get bored of running a hotel instead of adventuring but if sim-hotel is what rolls your dice go for it.

You left out a few key parts

Have the PCs hear some crazy rumours about the Free City being turned into a festering pit of undead with thousands of wights running loose.
A black dragon shows up and gives them 1000gp for helping her cause.
Worn infested Zombies become such a hinderence that the PCs are forced to provide protection to their guests to and from the hotel. A few guests don't make it and business starts to drop off.
Finally, as their business venture stands in ruins great green worms, the size of castles, descend upon them and devour the world.
Then ask them if they really want to play Hotels & Bellhops or Dungeons & Dragons?

The Exchange

All it would take is one spoiled rich-kid rogue-wannabe getting past the lantern locks and blown off the ledge to his death for the place to be closed down, and the PC’s hunted for a while. PC’s always do the unexpected, the same with NPC’s. Every so often, the traps reset themselves, too, which can lead to unexpected consequences.
