Demonomicon sources?

Dragon Magazine General Discussion

A question for James Jacobs and Erik Mona (as well as anyone else wanting to chime in):

On the EN messageboards I asked for suggestions of other sources of "Demonomicon type" information of the lower planes. I was given a good list of Planescape sources and I'm in the process of buying them one by one. What do you think are the best sources for additional RPG reading material?

you're welcome. ;)

It's difficult to go wrong with Planescape, honestly, although be prepared to roll your eyes a few times. It was the mid-90s, and style sometimes trumped utility. You have been warned.

If you're looking for lower planar sources, I'd suggest picking up the following, roughly in this order:

Faces of Evil: The Fiends
Hellbound: The Blood War
Planes of Chaos
Planes of Law
Planes of Conflict

Also, the various Monstrous Compendium appendices are always worth a read, and a lot of good information is subtly tucked into the monster write-ups.

Honestly, you might also want to pick up an ESD of the original Monster Manual 2. The information there is sparse, but there's a lot of it, and it forms the baseline for the evil denizens of the D&D multiverse.

Bad, bad, bad editor in chief... besmirching Planescape like that. Tsk, tsk, tsk.

Where would 3rd edition be without the wealth of material Planescape churned out? Sometimes I think 3E could use a little more style and less utility... just a little.

Oh, I think third edition could use more style and less utility every single day, but that doesn't mean I want to see the phrase "bone-box" in every third column.

That's because your just some leather headed prime. Some factol is gonna creep up and close your bone-box for you, berk!

I have to admit, as much as I liked Planescape, it was hard to beleive that every faction and station in life would have the same slang. Street level warrior for hire? Planescape slang. Erudite Sage that has spent his whole life reading different languages and dealing with other scholars? Planescape slang.

yeah... that did get a little old. ;) you see much less of it in the last year or so of Planescape.

Awwww, C'mon.... What's a bone box, berk, barmy, or basher between friends??? It's exactly the Cant that made Don Cheadle's character in Oceans Eleven my favorite!!! I actually knew what he was talking about:)

I'm sorry. I don't speak "Fanboy". (Sorry. I had to say it. Please forgive me.)
