if you smite a creature and drop it do the bonus from smite add to subsequent cleave attacks?

In a word, no. The smite ability only applies to a single attack made by the character each time.

You could, however, use a second smite on the cleave target, or not use smite on the first, and then use it on the cleave.

the short description of cleave in the players says that it is a follow through attack. so i figured same swing same smite.

Don't confuse the blurb with the actual benefit of the feat. It is a separate attack not one huge swing. If you have multiple smites, there is nothing in the description that says you couldn't use another smite attempt on a cleave.

A cleave is when you kill an enemy and there is another one close enough that you can immediately attack it. The next attack is a separate attack and requires another attack roll. Therefore the benefits of smite wouldn't carry over. At least in my campaign. In yours you can make it if you want. That's the great thing about bein DM.
