The Three Faces of Evil: editing errors

Age of Worms Adventure Path

I am starting the Age of Worms campaign with TFoE. This is my first Dungeon Magazine module and I have noticed alot of small typographical errors that make prep time a bit longer than usual. Examples: Greataxes list at 1d8 damage w/o str. mod., heavy flail dealing 1d8+str instead of 1d10, The citadel of Hextor tactics has all the room numbers off by one.

I am new to dm'ing, and while these are minor problems, it takes away from preparing for the complicated combat rules that will be tested that week by my spiderclimbing warlock and enlarge happy spike chain wielding swashbuckler.

Is this a common occurence with dungeon magazine? I am really enjoying the story and look forward to running other modules in the series.

Just wanting to know if future modules will require the same prep time.

Thanks in advance.

PhysicsWolf,

I have been buying Dungeon for around 10 years now and I can say that the editing errors in The Three Faces of Evil is the exception rather then the rule. I rarely see see any mistakes in the magazine and it, more often then not, correctly shows stat blocks for creatures even when the sources are incorrect. Such as the Mind Flayer Sorcerer where Dungeon gets the CR correct even if it is listed incorrectly in the Monster Manual. I would like to encourge you to keep buying Dungeon, it is great resource.

I'd like to think that issue #125's numerous errors is a fluke, and I'm pretty sure it is. We were working on that issue during the heart of the convention season, a time when we're just so busy that it (unfortunately) showed in that issue.

I would have to say, after playing all the way through to issue #128 (we just have the mindflayer left in #127) that there will be some prep time involved before playing. I know that I'm using Dungeon because I don't have time to make all this stuff up myself, and I agree, the story is very good. However, I was less than pleased with the stats for Telakin. His general stats are given in the appendix, but he doesn't appear as just a doppelganger, but as a wizard and a raging barbarin half-orc, for which no stats were supplied. As this is the death scene for the top doppelganger I would have liked the stats done out. I'm sure it was a space issue, which I understand, but still. I think if I had to start this whole thing over again I would wait for the hardcover edition when all the small items have been fixed and space is less of an issue. I know that I've found the Shackled City hardbound book to be excellent, and I'm looking forward to unleashing it upon my group sometime soon.

Also I wanted to ask about the encounter with the mindflayer as the party is leaving the doppelganger lair. He only stays for one round before retreating, but if the party get the jump on him and lets loose with a bunch of spells and such they are going to demand some XP for the encounter with him. My party all clamoured for XP as they figured they had driven him off. I'm loath to give them the XP for the mindflayer twice, or before he's actually dispatched. Anyone got a solution?

Well, since they didn't defeat him definitively, you can give your PCs some of the XP for defeating him now. If they complain about the small amount, simply point out that he got away, so they don't deserve full XP. Then, when they finish him off, they receive the rest of the XP award.

After some 'discussion' it was decided that I would just up the CR of the encounter, so instead of awarding them XP based on the Drow thralls being CR 5 I upped them to CR 6. Everyone was happy.

Thanks. My gaming group and I have enjoyed this module so far. We will definitely continue on with the series. It's good to hear that this is the exception instead of the norm.
