Is Waterdeep a bad match up for Free City in FR AoW?

I was reading through the AoW overload, and they suggest Waterdeep as the location for the Free City. Size wise its correct, but it seems like gladiator combat is a huge part of an upcoming adventure, something that Waterdeep is decidedly lacking in.

The only city that has gladiator combat that I can recall is Hillsfar, is that a better match for the Free City?

Waterdeep is home to the Field of Triumph, a big amphitheater across the street from the temple of Tempus (war god). I think in it's original conception it was more a place for city celebrations and gatherings than a gladiatorial arena, but it's not too much of a stretch to make it match The Champion's Belt. More details in the conversion notes for #128.

Eric --

Just wanted to say Kudos on CoS:W and Blood of Malar. I know this is off-topic, but did you get your start in Dungeon?

Nope, the "Forgotten Deities" articles in Polyhedron, followed by Faiths & Avatars.

My previous Dungeon articles were Dungeon #69 - Sleep of Ages and Dungeon #73 - Eye of Myrkul.

Just to let you all know, if you are interested . . . Thay definately has gladitorial arenas, but using a Thayan city REALLY alters some of the background for running the Age of Worms, though it could be a challenge.

Westgate also has a gladitorial arena, and as a city that puts on a civil face for trade, but also houses some of the nastiest secrets in Faerun.

I don't feel an ancient Roman style gladiatorial arena is in flavor with Waterdeep either. I'm planning more of a general tournament with staged battles and merciful weapon melee contests organized by the church of Tempus. I'll have to review the religious holidays but I'm sure I can tie one into the tournament to create a grand celebration.

Dark Archive

I'm thinking of using Skuld in Mulhorand as the Free City, and making the gladiatorial games part of the Temple of Anhur.

Question - slightly OT - Are there any resources out there on Westgate? I find Westgate one of the most intriguing cities, and yet I know little about it, other than it seems to have an old eastern Europe feel to it.

Well, this information is free from the WOTC website:

Eye Of Myrkul..by the gods, that was my favourite Forgotten Realms adventure. All 5 of the Mere of Dead Men adventures were good but Eye of Myrkul was outstanding.
