Seconded. When I read the Ecology of the Kobold I thought "this is what all ecologies should be like." And then ecologies got longer.
I don't think they've actually gotten longer (except perhaps for the kobold article). I believe that authors are still bound by a 3000 word limit in the guidelines (about five pages in the magazine), but they have greater flexibility now in what they can include. It would not surprise me, however, if Wes sometimes specifically asks for a longer ecology article from authors he trusts and has worked with before.

I have just recently begun playing D&D again after almost a decade. I really like the newer systems. The ecology sections are wonderful although I haven't yet collected enough back issues of Dragon to compare formats. This brings me to my question. I would like to collect back issues beginning with the issues that included ecologies. What issue # was the first with the ecology section(even if it was not yet a monthly occurance). Also, what issue # began introducing articles for 3.5. Any help has my warmest thanks.

Kudos on the revision to the Ecologies format. I had lost interest in the ecologies for a long time (the last I remember reading completely were the mummy and the troll), but the last few have recaptured my interest. The kobold, kraken, and now lizardfolk were all fantastic!
Now, if you could just bring back the occassional variants (like with the troll and mummy articles, or the fantastic chapters in Lords of Madness), I'd be eternally grateful. If you need extra space, I'd recommend dropping the "vs." portion. I can't recall ever seeing any positive comments on its inclusion (although five positive comments will probably follow this post). :)
