When will we start seeing The Bestiary?

Dungeon Magazine General Discussion

Subject says it all. This feature was announced several months ago and I have been eagerly anticipating it. I'm a big sucker for new monsters, so the sooner it starts appearing the better.

Issue #124's got three new monsters... well, 2 new monsters and an old classic updated to third edition (anyone remember the hordlings?). As for actual mosnter articles, they'll actually be appearing in Dragon for the most part—new monsters will appear in Dungeon only when they're part of an adventure in that issue.

Of course... new monsters have traditionally been my favorite parts of both magazines, so I'm doing what I can to convince those smart and talented Dragon editors to monster their magazine up!

so you like new monsters, eh? I'll see what I can do to put a few new monsters in my next few adventure proposals then. Of course, they will still have to have some relevance to the adventure. I'm not silly enough to believe that you'll accept an adventure simply because it has the dreaded Yoorgithilinorothax in it!

I just got #124 today, excellent monsters indeed. I love the Maure castle stuff (the monsters in the first instalment were classics).
I guess I will keep my eyes on Dragon for monsters from now on. Thanks for the update James!

I am comfortable with leaving the pure monster articles in Dragon. They seem to mesh well with the "Ecology of..." column that already runs in Dragon. I prefer to see page space and text in Dungeon used for adventure material.

I'd tend to agree though I would be willing to make exceptions for monsters that where critical to the plot. Especially if they were upgraded from an earlier edition.

Anyone know where the Quicklings are hidden? Do they just have a name change or are they completely absent from the monster manuals? I had assumed that they where absent until the other day when I noticed that the Fiend Folio's Yurian's are Crabmen and now I'm wondering if my favourite monsters are still there - just cleverly disguised.

Tome of Horrors from NECROMANCER Games has updated the quickling (for 3.0), and the Advanced Bestiary from Green Ronin has a quickling template, which can make all types of creatures quickling creatures. They haven't as yet appeared in any WoTC product to my knowledge (maybe on the web).

You might not want to answer this one James, but a few monsters created by minions of Kyuss have appeared in DRAGON over the years, and I was wondering whether any of them were going to return for the new AP? The Hound of Kyuss was one from 2nd Ed, and there was also some sort of multi-headed dragon monster with an M sounding name that was really nasty.

Also, Im betting that the avolakia and the ulgurstata will be making an appearance in the new AP. Just call it a hunch! ;-)

As in Hoardlings of Hades from 1st editions MM 2?? Cewl beans! I loved them and the tables for rolling up their various attributes… elephant trunk, bat-wing-like ears, etc, etc, etc… They were loads of fun because you almost never get the same hoardling twice (which is, of course, the point).

In addition to the source Phil L. gave, Quicklings are also in Necromancer Games ‘Glades of Death’ book along with some of my favorite… um, understated monsters from the depths of 1st edition .

The Banderlog…a big mentally aware baboon who’s preferred class is barbarian and main ability is slingin’ coconuts (okay, or rocks)?? Oh, yeah! I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again…Monkeys make everything better!
The Kech
The Korred…dancin’, laughin’ extra-hairy satyr-kin
One of my favorites of all time… Memory Moss (aka Obliviax) although it’s treated more as a hazard than a tiny monster.

Now, if only Stench Kine make it back somewhere! Sigh.

Hordlings are the highlight of the issue in my opinion. I still have about a half dozen or so left over from my first edition DMG. I just finished having my players make a ton of d6 and percentile rolls which may in the near future spell their own doom. Karma for the good roller. Very cool.
