Magic That Never Sleeps!

The Dark Eye RPG English edition Kickstarter on now!

The Dark Eye, the legendary German roleplaying game published by our friends over at Ulisses Spiele is heading to your tabletop, now in a brand new English edition!

Heroic adventure awaits in The Dark Eye's campaign setting of Aventuria! The heart of Aventuria is in the Middlerealm, an empire nominally ruled by the young Empress Rohaja, but in reality control lies with the regional lords and ladies of the region. Years ago, a province of the Middlerealm (now known as the Shadowlands) was overcome by human servants of the dreaded archdemons, and the region remains ever vigilant for signs of the return of the armies of the Shadowlands. You'll also discover regions of Aventuria that are the home to orcs emboldened by their whale-god Swafnir, jungle lands in constant struggle against the threat of slavers and manhunters, the lush northern elven forests, and the harsly cold Far North, where only yetis, dark elves, and a barbaric tribe of humans dare to live out on the ice.

The Dark Eye derives its name from the most intriguing magical artifacts in Aventuria—the Dark Eyes. These rare and powerful magical items allow users to view far away places and glimpse scenes from the distant past. Creating such an artifact calls for very powerful magic and a sizable quantity of raw meteoritic iron. Few spellcasters have ever mastered the necessary enchantments. When completed successfully, the iron assumes the form of an orb or an eye.

The unique, time-tested game system of the The Dark Eye lets you tailor your experience to your group. Be it a fun, quick dungeon crawl, elaborate storytelling session, or immersive simulation game, the game rules allow for depth and detail, yet are still fast to learn. You can try out the system in the free Quick-Start Rules, which also includes a short beginning adventure.

By joining in the The Dark Eye Kickstarter Campaign you'll be able to contribute to the new chapter in the legacy of The Dark Eye, and get access to exciting campaign rewards. Pledge levels and rewards include digital copies of the Core Rules and Witch's Dance adventure, deluxe physical versions of The Dark Eye Core Rules, and more!

Do I have to use the world of Golarion? May I create my own world?

Hey Robert,

The quick answer to your question is No, you do not have to use Golarion as the setting for you game. In fact you never have to use any published setting for any game so pick and choose what you like from any kind of trope and make your own world.

For the longer answer, The Dark Eye is its own stand-alone RPG system and is not compatible with the Pathfinder RPG rules. It also has its own setting associated with it that is different from Golarion. What it does share with other fantasy games like Pathfinder and Dungeons & Dragons is that it is a swords and wizards fantasy game where anything is possible.

Thanks

The setting is a mix of dark and gritty low fantasy with tongue-and-cheek humor that doesn't fit the rest of what they've built. It's just WEIRD. For some electronic assistance in getting to know their setting, try the Blackguards series of games.

"regions of Aventuria that are the home to orcs emboldened by their whale-god Swafnir"

You are mixing two different things.
The orcs have nothing to do with Swafnir. The orcs have Tairach and Brazoragh and their Orclands. Swafnis belongs to the viking-similar-region of called Thorwal.

Aventura is a cool setting to play with a very detailed history.

Is there anywhere to get a good overview of what kind of rules system is used? It sounds pretty interesting but I'd like to have some idea of how it works mechanically. A video would be ideal if one exists (I learn better through listening then reading).

The Kickstarter page has a link to a Quick Start download and there is a small English how to session on their YouTube channel
