This is a pretty common piece of advice, but just keep checking Gamer Connection. The most common way to get into a game is to post an application to a GM's recruitment thread, but places go quickly - you have to be fast. Having a pre-made character and an idea of what sort of app you'd write is a good first step.
The "I need a group and DM" approach is potentially viable (I've seen it work once or twice in my limited time on the boards) but takes a lot more luck to bring together a group of players and a GM. Alternately, try looking around for other RPing sites - even if here is going through a dry spell, some other sites might be looking for players.
