Rise of the Runelords

Liberty's Edge

Our Warpriest died retaking Rannick, and after meeting Razmus in the Valley of Broken Trees, the players fell in love with the character (I played him almost like a wiser version of Draxx from Guardians of the Galaxy).

Since the player in question didn't want to make a new character from scratch, he asked if he could play Razmus.

I accepted.

I have several questions, seeing as I've never actually had a Large PC before, much less a Hill Giant (and now we're starting FotSG for more fun):

-We're a four-player group of intermediate players. Would having Reach and a crapton of damage (Razmus nearly one-shotted Barl Breakbones) necessitate reworking encounters?

-Would Magic Items have a different cost by being sized for a Large character?

-How do you think the people of Sandpoint would react to the three known heroes (They're all well-respected citizens) dragging along a freaking Hill Giant with them?

The magic items cost will not be changed TOO much, just the cost for size large base items.

I wouldn't worry much about the encounters - its always easy to add a couple of low end mooks to the mix to draw fire.

He's gonna be pretty effective for a lot of it I suspect, given the amount of combats agains giant enemies should leave plenty of room for size large characters, however, reach won't mean QUITE as much offensively against the giants.

The giant is unlikely to be particularly welcome in town, but then there is not much size large places for him to go to in town anyway, I would present that fact and see how the players try to work around it.

Thanks.

After a certain point, and to help with the town...

Reduce Monster - Sorc/Wiz Level 4. 1/hr per level. And Dismissible.

Sandpoint issue solved (sort of) - it might make him more welcome. And just set up a special house for him during those times you can't have him running around with a Reduce Monster spell active.

I would let him feel sharply that he is a monster in most peoples eyes, to be honest. With the Storval Plateau not too far away, most people will be extremly wary about a giant in their village, no matter how well liked the heroes are. Depending on the NPCs disposition, some might shoot first and ask questions later, if at all.

Size will be a problem, too - no riding animal, at least nothing you can buy regularly. Just how much does a hill giant eat? Judging from their weight, given as 1,100 pound on average, I´d say at least five or six times as much as a human. A horse needs about 10 to 20 pounds of food a day, depending on size and workload. I´d guess that a hill giant would need as least as much, probably more (keeping that brain running needs a lot of energy).

Another thing is game balance. Regular NPCs have a CR one level lower than their class level. Judging from that, Razmus as written (CR 10) would be roughly equivalent to a 11th-level PC of one of the standard races. Is he equal to a 11th-level fighter? I think he might be a bit more powerful than that. And look at gaining levels - you should probably see him as a 10th or 11th level character for gaining new levels, surely not 3rd level.

CR 10 as written would be roughly equivalent to a 10th level PC, not 11th level ---- regular NPCs don't have PC wealth, which increases CR by one.
