Jonathan Roberts cartographer for Kobold Quarterly, Sunken Empires, and Coliseum Morpheuon, presents another Fantastic Map: "The Bandit's Hideout." Take your adventures into the wretched hive of scum and villany beneth the earth. This map originally appeared in Kobold Quarterly #9.
This two multi-page PDFs allow you to print out the battlemaps at a 1 square=1 inch scale and they are also available in printer-friendly light grayscale versions. Fully printed, this map displays both an upper and a lowerlevel along with an isometric JPG image so that you can easily orientate where PCs are located at in the caves.
The pack also contains high-resolution Jpegs of the map with and without grids for you to print out as a poster map, or for use in your virtual tabletop of choice The file also contains maptool campaign files set up for quick use in the 4.0 version of the world's most popular roleplaying game and its 3.5 thriving spiritual successor. The Maptool files require Maptool 1.3b84 or newer to work.

This map pack comes as both with a 19 and 33-page pdf, each with 1 page front cover, 1 page how-to-use, leaving 17 and 31 pages, respectively.
Let's start with the lower level:
We get a one-page version of the map, complete with grid and 8 pages blown-up versions of the map (including grids, of course)for use with miniatures as well as a b/w-version blown-up version of the map.
We also get the 1-page overview-map on the upper-level as well as 16 pages of blown-up versions of the map, again in full-color and b/w.
The lair is in itself interesting, as it is located in a cavern featuring a waterfall and features the stunning level to detail I've come to appreciate from Jonathan Robert's work. Even better - poor Europeans like yours truly get the whole maps in A4-format as well.
The Fantastic maps line also provides jpegs of the overview maps, with and without grids as well as full maptool-support.
What really made my day with this installment of fantastic maps, though, was the additional isometric version of the bandit's lair that is provided in a separate jpeg: Damn, I love it. Perhaps because it conjures up some pleasant memories of grognardian days of old for me, but I love it and its inclusion proves that this already excellent line seeks to go above and beyond.
Conclusion:
The maps are stunning and bookmarked, the support is extensive and for several formats and the isometric bonus jpeg is just great. I could whine about wanting a blown-up isometric version of the map in addition to the top-down ones, but that would be criticizing for additional, awesome content. This installment went even further than other ones and thus I'll happily, gladly give it a full 5 stars - Jonathan Roberts has once again provided an interesting location that is far cooler than the rather generic "Bandit's Lair"-title would lead you to presume. Highly recommended!
From Jonathan Roberts comes yet another gorgeous full color map scaled for miniature use with all the trimmings the others in the Fantastic Maps series possess, black and white low ink printer friendly maps, Maptool files, etcetera. There is also a note that refers to the adventure in the Kobold Quarterly #9 this lair was designed to accompany, for those in need of an adventure to run.
This map comes with an upper main lair layout and a lower area as well that overlap in the third dimension. As an added bonus, there is an oblique cut-away view of the layout of the lair and how the two sections are connected that is visually stunning. I love the artistic additions that make this look more like a natural, yet augmented limestone cavern with a flowing stream through the center of the complex. There are lots of little details in this lair, from a wench for heavy cargo to a fully dressed-out animal carcass cooking on a spit and more, that provide all sorts of in game high jinks for players and the game master. And, once cleared out of the current residents, wouldn’t this make a nice adventuring party lair?
I love a good map, a map that I don't have to try to redraw in full color, bonus. I rate this at 5 of 5 stars for this nice tool.
