An RPG Resource Review

5/5

This Compendium is more than just a repackaging of the first 11 One-on-One adventures (written for GM and a single player) into one convenient book, the opportunity has been taken to optimise all the adventures, originally written for Dungeons & Dragons 3e to the Pathfinder RPG.

It starts with a Foreword that explains the origins of this particular series - time spent in remote locations where you're lucky to find one other role-player, let alone enough of them to run a conventional game. Most of us have been in that situation - I recall being stuck on a cruise ship amusing the one other gamer I'd found by running AD&D adventurers based on Botaccio's Decameron which I happened to be reading at the time! But here is a collection of adventures specifically written for a solo character, and designed to be completed by a single character on his own. Each even has a pre-generated one provided, which ensures that any skills, spells or abilities the author thinks will be useful in the adventure will be available. Or of course, you can play your own character - each adventure specifies the most suitable character class and level, although most could be played by any character with a bit more effort.

Adventures range from 2nd to 11th level, and you'll find at least one suitable for virtually any class, although rogues get the lion's share - well, they ARE possibly the best class for operating solo, after all! Those who enjoy a good brawl need not worry, there are plenty of opportunities to engage in combat, while the adventures require thought as well as a strong sword-arm or ready spell book to complete.

While the plotlines of the adventures remain true to the original publications, a lot of effort has been put into the mechanics to ensure that everything works perfectly for the Pathfinder ruleset. And of course, the real treat is Adventure 6.66: The Pleasure Prison of the B'thuvian Demon Whore - the adventure that launched the series, now generally rather expensive on auction sites if you can find it at all. More prudish gamers need not fear, despite the title, while tongue-in-cheek all remains quite decent unless you really get carried away with the chocolate golem! All the adventures are fun, whichever side of the GM screen you are sitting, but this one in particular is a merry romp in an over-the-top Conan-esque style.

By their nature, most of the adventures are 'one-offs' to be run, perhaps, when you cannot get the whole group together for a regular session. If you prefer, however, each is provided with information to enable you to scale the adventure for a small party if you have more than one eager player. Also, as several adventures involve a rogue, it is possible to link them into a loose series - more 'adventures in the life of' than a genuine adventure path, but sufficient for several entertaining sessions nonetheless. Put it this way, this one is coming with me next holiday... something to keep my daughter entertained if nothing else!

Hey, look! It's the first non-Paizo print product to be solicited for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game!

Award-winning? What's the award?

Dark Archive

Sounds interesting !!

Hmm a tad pricey for a mod but still worth checking out I guess.

edit: DOH !! I did not realize there was 11 mods in this product ! Ok, makes better sense now !

Well, I don't know. Does anyone have any experience with the 1-on-1 advantures? Also, these are basically conversions. Will they also be including something new in with the 11 1-on-1 modules that will be offered for this price? OTOH, for 11 modules in one book, it just might be worth the price. After all, $32 is not that bad.

The Pleasure Prison of the B'thuvian Demon Whore won the silver in the category of Best Adventure in the 2006 ENnie Awards. (The gold was taken by The Shackled City Adventure Path.)

Given that you'd pay about double that for just the PDF editions of those modules—and the original suggested retail price of the print editions of most of those adventures was about $12 each—I'd say that it's a pretty good deal!

~thinking hard~ Hrmmmmnnnnnnnn..... ~My right hand taps on the table while my chin in in the palm of my left hand~ Well, I have read some of their other stuff and I like it. Lets give them a chance. Pre-ordered!

Hmmmm ...

Is Valar Project's Book of Erotic Fantasy a useful accessory for this?

I have, let me tell you a quick story.

Early 2008 or late 2007 I got a book from this company and they sent me an extra copy of one of the 1 on 1's. They told be just keep it which was fine I put it on the shelf and didn't think I'd ever use it. Iorny upon irony less then a four weeks later had a game where only one player showed. Usualy that means beer night, maybe reworking and clearing up your character sheet. Not that time, I remembered the 1 on 1 and it worked out great, even got some good story telling in as the character had to leave the group and the following game rejoin them. After that I said to myself I pick up this line eventually but the big sell out of companies ending lines during the Ed. Wars forced me to put them on the back burner. Luckly this product gives me the best of both worlds, all issues in one, and updated to Pathfinder.

Just so you know the 1 on 1's like the name clearly implies are a nich product. They are very effective and do a good job, but I do see them as useful when players can't show up. However upon seeing this product I can now see a situation where I can have the players be at a crossroads, perhaps getting sick of each other, or being split up against their will and having a series of solo adv. for each of them. Just to give them a history outside the group. Kindalike the question of what the War of the Lance heros did just before the reunited at the start of the Drangon Lance saga.

Hope this helps,

TTFN DRE

What are the level ranges for these adventures?

And what is the approximate release date?

One-on-one adventures will be great for my son Nerrat and I. I don't think the "Pleasure Prison of the B'thuvian Demon Whore" is going to be the one we play though. ;-) What else do they got?

Of the ones I have the lowest level one is 2-4th and the highest 9-11th of which there is two of the later. Most of the ones I have fall in the 6-10 range. All of them are 21 pages long in PDF format. Well all but the Pleasure Prison of the B'thuvian Demon Whore which is 32 pages and fairly amusing. It is also in theory made for Krunk the 7th level Barbarian, some of you might reconize the name from the youtube videos about the two guys playing DnD i think they are called Afraid of Girls or something like that.

Thats a list of all 11 adventures that come with the pack and Pleasure Prison of the B'thuvian Demon Whore. Since it says the first 11 adventures my guess is it has them all that are on that page except the Pleasure Prison. Or it might not have number 11, which isn't a adventure anyways.

blope wrote:

As I recal the adv. was for 6th level character, but my player was 8th, so I did a little adjustment, mainly adding a few encounters to fit the story, but it really wasn't an issue. As for the other modules, I think they focus more on levels between 6 and 10, but that's from memeory so don't qoute me on it.

Cool can't wait. I have Demon Whore and ran it a couple years ago, was a lot of fun. Gonna have to convert these to Golarion of course =p

These are print products, correct? I am seeing a Pathfinder Advantage discount being applied, so I assume so, but wanted to make sure.

The version up for preorder is print, yes. (Basically, if you don't see "PDF" or "Download" or some other specific file type in the title, it's a print product.)

I expect Expeditious Retreat will offer the PDF through paizo.com on or around the 13th, though.

Liberty's Edge

These were so super under 3.5 rules. This looks to be a good collection for pathfinder. Is there a more accurate date for the preorder? Thanks.

Not just that, it was written by the very "DM" from that video.

He's a hardcore Dungeon Master. He doesn't just write adventures. He BECOMES THEM!

ok just to know... is there any chance this product will appear in PDF?

I don't mind the price, compared with the original ones is a great price... but i need to play with the finances, and reducing shipping... and where i receive things I have some kind of limit... after that I am yelled and threatened with a Cease & Dessit spending :P

PDF is excellent to hide how much i buy :P

You could always downgrade it to a PG version and rename it "Funtime Detention Center of the B'thuvian Demon Naughty Lady."

Will this be in Paizo's warehouse before the 13th? Would it be possible to get this shipped to me with the PfRPG rules?

Our industry isn't very good about setting, communicating, coordinating, or following through on release dates. That's not a slight on Expeditious Retreat in any way—I'm talking about the whole supply chain here. There's just very little ability to coordinate anything for any but the biggest releases.

At any rate, I wouldn't expect any Gen Con releases (other than our own, of course) to be in our warehouse until after Gen Con... but sometimes you get lucky.

You kinda had me at Demon Whore. ;P

Have you all recieved an ETA on this item? I am just checking. Thanks in advance!

Looks pretty sweet.

I mean I know it's a conversion of existing stuff but the prices for 11 modules is nice and I wanted them anyway when they were 3.5e.

Any chance of a listing of the individual modules included?

No new info yet—their website still says August— but you can view the original modules here. And note that it's really 12 modules: 1 through 11 plus "6.66."

I was mistaken about that... it's 1 through 10 plus 6.66 for a total of 11 modules.

Liberty's Edge

Would there be any chance of a PDF compilation of the original 3.5 versions?

I like the idea of 1 on 1 scenarios, but the individual 3.5 PDFs are soooo expensive (a total of $69 dollars for the scenarios that are in this compilation, the PDF of which is only $18).

I am also curious about those. Has anyone played them ?

We have no plans to compile the 3.5 files. We're looking forward with Pathfinder.

So were these redesigned to allow any class to play? I remember them being focused for certain classes. Any plans on doing a new series?
