The Sands of Akiton by GM Quirk

Game Master Quirk, Private Eye

SLIDES

I am possibly looking for one or two more players to join a brand new original Starfinder 2E PbP campaign. This group already includes players who have been playing together using Starfinder 1E for quite some time. We occasionally enjoy welcoming a new player.

Let's start with the setting, then I'll toss out a few ideas for character creation.

AZURITE HOLLOW is a small mining village 20 miles southwest of Khefak Depot on the planet Akiton. A collective of Hylki and ysoki miners called Twin Clans Extractives first began mining here following the end of the thasteron boom many years ago. The town, while nowhere near as big as Khefak Depot, has grown to nearly 500 individuals, most of who work in the mines, though there are a number of transport and logistics personnel, engineers, guards, and hospitality workers in Azurite Hollow.

Azurite Hollow has produced significant wealth for its residents. The blue crystals that come from the mine are used in several industrial and military applications, notably for sensor equipment.

YOUR CHARACTER

You are most likely a hylki human or a ysoki, though it is possible for other races to find their way to Azurite Hollow as temporary employees, consultants, security, or as an entrepreneur. It should be noted that currently only ysoki or hylki clan members have ownership interest in the mines.

ME

My name is Alan, and I have been an online and in-person GM for STarfinder since the game was brand new oh so long ago. I'm excited about 2E, though it may be that I'll be learning some of the rules as we go. I anticipate starting our campaign with a couple of simple encounters just to get our feet wet and let you as players get a measure of your characters.

SUBMITTING A CHARACTER

You don't need to totally flesh out your character. An idea for a class, ancestry, and background is a great start, and if you can write a paragraph with some specific ideas that detail why you're in Azurite Hollow I'd be most pleased.

Please plan on posting 4-5 times a week, perhaps slightly more if we are in a combat encounter.

Good luck! I'll be posting just a bit more about Azurite Hollow, the people who live there, NPC's you might not like very much, and rumors from the desert soon.

Hi, Alan. Drake here.

I played a starfinder 1E briefly a few years ago. I have not looked at the 2E rules set yet, but will peruse them and come up with the basics of the ABCs to throw my hat into the ring.

I have read through most of the past two pages of discussion tab on your Threefold Conspiracy campaign.

Sounds like it will be a very fun campaign.

Those characterizations of this campaign could come to pass. I have the first several months of this mapped out, at least loosely.

Excited to see your submission.

Here she is. :)

I would probably lean towards a martial character this time (though an Akashic Mystic still looks fun!). Murderbot might be a fun inspiration. The Western vibe also had me looking at Corpsefolk a bit too.

I went with Ikeshti for ancestry, as no one indicated creating one and they are native to Akiton.

As the potential akashic mystic uses the occult tradition and the potential witchwarper would use either the arcane or occult tradition, I decided on mystic using either the divine or primal tradition. I went with primal tradition. (elemental connection)

Working with the theme of the campaign setting I went with a type of 'Calamity Jane' character (spells that can cause foes to become off-guard and to remove the off-guard condition from herself and allies (as well as give brief immunity to being off-guard).

Kala Jayne does not like others laying their hands on her, which can cause a one-two combo (Puff Up reaction & sigiled scales injury echo) as well as bit of her scales coming off when someone grabs/hits her with unarmed strike or a non-reach melee weapon (next ancestry feat taken will be Shed Skin).

ABC's, skill, spells, gear:

Kala Jayne

Ancestry:Ikeshti
Heritage: Thorny Ikeshti
1st-level ancestry feat: Sigiled Scales ==> aberrant force ==> injury echo

Background: Final Survivor ==> Terrain Stalker ==> rubble

Connection Skill: Nature
Connection Cantrip: recharge weapon
1st-level Connection Spell: shifting surge
Initial Epiphany Focus Spell: elemental weapon

If one or more of your elemental epiphanies are active, you must select the elemental trait you chose as part of casting those spells. Until the end of their next turn, the target's next Strike deals damage based on the chosen trait (your choice), rather than its typical damage type: electricity or sonic for air, bludgeoning or piercing for earth, acid or slashing for metal, fire for fire, bludgeoning or cold for water, or piercing or poison for wood.

Spell Repertoire:

Cantrips (connection cantrip plus 4 of choice):

- recharge weapon

Finding the hoverboard helped her survive whatever killed the rest of her brood and the brood-minder.

note: I copied and pasted hoverboard type-up to notes section of PB (Starfinder) character sheet, as it does not come up as gear item (and custom items for Starfinder on PB has not been added as a feature yet).

Let's give Kala Jayne a little screen test, allowing for at least a possible reason she finds herself in Azurite Hollow...

The L7 Bar and Grill is always a friendly place to stop along the road between Khefek Depot and points south. Situated in a safe mining town just a few hundred yards off the road, L7 can always be counted on to provide great food and reasonably priced beverages to miners and travelers alike.

A lone ysoki steps through the door. He's bedraggled and possibly stressed out. His uniform indicates he works for the mines. He's obviously had a long day. After ordering a beverage and taking a long drink from the bottle he's been served, he turns to you. "Not sure I've seen you around here before. Welcome to The Hollow. Glad you stopped. I'm Sandy, and I'm the town manager. What brings you to these parts?"

I'm very interested as well if you're considering a second new player. I can maintain the daily posting rate and have finished APs that spanned over 7 years in PbP. I'll post a rough build and background this evening if you're still open to a 2nd player.

I'm uncertain what direction we'll go, whether I will pick one or two players. You will certainly receive the same considerations as any other submissions.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

The Etymology of Kala Jayne's name:

player's etymology: 3 reasons:

1) Calamity Jane (The 'unluck' she can cause while others are near her.)
2) Jayne Cobb from Firefly (For the spelling of Jayne (instead of Jane), which was influenced by players' discussion about the new campaign having a 'Firefly' feel.)
3) The Hindu goddess Kali is closely associated with destruction and, by extension, the chaotic, transformative, and often destructive forces of nature commonly regarded as calamities. While she is fundamentally viewed by her devotees as a loving Divine Mother, she embodies the "grim realities" of life, including death, time, and, in her specific "Samhara Kali" (destructive) form, acts of nature such as famine, floods, and epidemics.

character's etymology:

1) During her and her brood-mates' rearing, their brood-minder, Voss Vertassh, would give his charges names depending on what they acquired during scavenger-training days of the wrecked starships close to the location of the hive. Jayne and her small group of bonded brood-mates explored one of the larger shipwrecks and found long-decomposed bodies wearing small armored coats with filtered rebreathers. The room they found the bodies in was some type of classroom in a larger starship wreck, each with a name tag identifying the owner. The corpses not needing the armor any more, the ikeshti group each removed one and put it on - the name tag on Jayne's is 'Jayne'. The name tags on the armor her bonded brood-mate brothers acquired are "Crusher" (male), "Sisko" (male) and "Wildman" (male). The name tags is what their brood-minder, Voss Vertassh, named each of them.

2) During the past decade while her, Crusher, Sisko and Wildman have frequented Khefak Depot, the locals give her the moniker 'Kala' (working with 'kala' is the Akitonian word for calamity). She Kala Jayne's background story spoiler for why she earned the moniker.

Kala Jayne's background story:

15 years ago: Kala Jayne hatched from her egg in an ikeshti brood 60 miles southeast of Khefak Depot (and approximately 63.25 miles east-southeast of Azurite Hollow),

10 years ago: Jayne and her bonded group of brood-mates find armor with name tags, and their brood-minder, Voss Vertassh. names each of them, matching their names to the name tag on the armor each of them wear.

The past 10 years: Crusher, Jayne, Sisko and Wildman became congregrants who were scavengers as well as occasionally making the 3 day trek to Khefak Depot to trade and gamble. Over the course of the decade...

Each of them acquired their own hoverboard.

Crusher (experimental ikeshti with gill sheath biotech augmentation) became the 'brains' and medic of the group (envoy with Through Desperate Times leadership style).

Sisko (desert ikeshti) became the 'charmer' and gambler of the group (operative with Skirmisher specialization).

Wildman (inured ikeshti) became the 'muscle' and hothead (enters the rivener state) of the group (soidier with Close-Quarters fighting).

While the males were gambling while Jayne was not with them and things got heated and turned into a brawl, their foes did not have any 'unlucky things' happen to them during the brawls.

While Jayne was with the males when Sisko's gambling turned into a brawl, their foes had 'unucky things' happen to them, earning Jayne the moniker of 'Kala' (working with 'Kala' meaning 'calamity' in Akitonian).

The past week...

Upon traveling back home from Khefak Depot with supplies for Voss Vertassh to share with their kin, when they arrived home Voss Vertassh was gone and their home was half-caved in, with most of their other brood-mates dead from the falling rocks. The four of them searched for their brood-minder and the rest of their kin, but instead discovered the cause of the devastation to their home - a glutton worm and in the chaos of trying to survive...trying to use their hoverboards to flee from the beast's ongoing destruction, the ground beneath Crusher, Sisko and Wildman caved in (giving Jayne the impression from the depth of the new crater, that her bonded brothers perished from the fall). She managed to get away, hiding among rubble to avoid the attention of the glutton worm, heading west-northwest for three days...arriving for the first time in her life to Azurite Hollow.

Kala Jayne's screen test:

I'm Sandy, and I'm the town manager. What brings you to these parts?"

Jayne does not appear to have heard the words, her mind still processing the trauma of losing all her brood-mates, her brood-minder and her three closest siblings. Then realization the ysoki had asked her the question, responds without turning her head to look at Sandy, "Surviving."

She turns her head to look the ysoki in his eyes, as tears start to fall from her own, "They're all gone."

In response to the look on Sandy's face she elaborates, "The largest gluttonworm I've ever seen destroyed my home, killing my brood-mates. We tried to find Voss Vertassh."

Sandy's look of interest spurs her to continue her tale of woe and she wipes the still-flowing tears from her eyes before continuing, "Our brood-minder. We could not find him among the rubble our home had become. Crusher, Sisko, Wildman and me looked for him, but we found the beast instead. We tried to get away but the worm caused the ground beneath my brothers to cave in."

Her slow-falling tears become a fountain as she starts to sobs, "My brothers are dead." She puts her head down, forehead touching the table, as her body heaves from sobbing slow down and stop.

She lifts her head off the table, and looks back at Sandy, "I'm sorry for the sob story. This place is the first civilization I have come across since they died three days ago."

She stands up, swipes the mucus away with the back of her right forearm, then extends the arm for an invation to shake hands with the self-proclaimed manager of the town, "I'm Jayne."

Her Lore skill from her background is Gluttonworm Lore.

On her Pathbuilder (Starfinder) character sheet, the Sigiled Scales feat adds 'Arcane Cantrips' as the title for the innate spell header the feat gives you (which is either divine (the gods) or occult (aberrations) with no option for arcane or primal innate spells from the ancestry feat, and on Pathbuilder apparently no where to adjust the header from 'Arcane Cantrips' to 'Occult Cantrips').

Bombadil's initial character submission. I'll probably use a program for the full build like HeroLab, helps keep everything in line and the BB code export is handy

Ancestry - Ysoki
Class - Operative
Background - Taxi Driver

Azurite Hollow wasn’t nothing like Khefak Depot, but after Bickle wrecked his cab options for work were limited. No one wanted to hire a Ysoki with a crash on his record. Driving the mine transport was easy work. The pay wasn’t great, but the mineshafts were comforting in an odd sort of way, maybe some ancestral memory of warrens and tunnels. And he could always grab a beer at the L7 between shifts. The miner’s living quarters were shabby and cheap, perfect for saving up a bit of scratch to get a new cab and get back to driving in a real Depot. If he had to wash down the mine dust with a few suds until then it wasn’t so bad. Things had been worse, and the blue crystals bringing wealth to the little community could potentially make things a whole lot better. Opportunity was always just around the corner.

Hey, gang, I'm one of the players from the previous campaign, rolling over into this one. You guys are ahead of me, I'm still trying to parse SF 2e.

Anyway, GMQ, I'll pitch you my idea here. I'm thinking an ikeshti mechanic/scavenger. He's back on Akiton after trying out unsuccessfully for the Starfire Legion. (He left boasting about doing great things and now has a heap of humble pie on his plate that's too big to eat.)

Ikeshti will be awesome because it's an Akitonian species with lower social status than ysoki.

What happened to the engineering skill? I can't find what replaces it for handling tech items that aren't computers, building stuff, or repairing things. Is technological wizard no longer a concept in SF?

Hi, therealthom.

For engineering (crafting/repair/recall knowledge) in SF2E, use the Craft skill.

In addition to the Craft skill, you will need a specific feat to create certain things:

Serum Crafting to create medicinal items.

Magical Crafting to create magic items.

Tech Crafting to create technological items.

@therealthom (& GMQ):

As you are creating an ikeshti, would you like to be from the same brood as Kala Jayne. Timeline-wise, she and her broodmates were hatched 15 years ago, and the ones that survived the 5 year rearing period have had the past 10 years to do stuff.

This post of mine describes the specifics of where Kala Jayne's (and potentially yours) brood home location is/was and other details, such as the name of the brood's brood-minder: Voss Vertassh.

If your character is (at least 5 years older than 15 years), another possibility is you could have been part of an older brood that Voss Vertassh was the brood-minder for, even potentially one of his biological off-spring (there is currently no set timeline for how many years ago Voss Vertassh won his fight to the death with the biological mother of the brood Voss Vertassh is the biological father of, which was the first ikeshti brood he reared), and your ikeshti could have left home before Kala Jayne and her bonded brother brood-mates were taken in by Voss Vertassh (as unhatched eggs/newborn hatchlings or juveniles that did not aleady have their own brood-minder (such as clutches that the biological mother won the death-fight against the biological father, or maybe their original brood-minder (and biological father) died, went missing, etc.).

You could also be younger than Kala Jayne, being an ikeshti hatchling (or unhatched egg) from another clutch (which the biological female won the fight to the death with the biological father of your character's biological brood-mates) that Voss Vertassh added to the hatchlings he reared.

If your character is between 0 to 5 years younger/older than Kala Jayne and her bonded brother brood-mates, then there would be anywhere from a few months to five years that both your ikeshti, Kala Jayne, Crusher, Sisko and Wildman were are part the juvenile ikeshti being reared by Voss Vertassh during the same time period.

Read the spoiler I included for GMQ in this post for more info regarding brood-minders.

@GMQ (& therealthom):
I was not particurlarly envisioning Voss Vertassh as being Jayne's and her bonded clutch-mate brothers' biological father (though depending, on whether therealthom wants their ikeshti mechanic/scavenger to be connected to Voss Vertassh or not, I am not opposed to the brood-minder being her (and some/all/none of her 3 bonded brothers, Crusher, Sisko and Wildman) biological father.

how ikeshti males become brood-minders

After 5 years and 3 feet of growth, ikeshtis leave their brood-minders and band together with other adolescents of various ages. After 10 to 20 years, ikeshtis begin to rut, becoming voracious, violent and single-minded in the urge to fight and mate. If they find a willing partner, they mate and give birth to a large clutch, then fight each other to the death. If the male wins, he becomes a brood-minder. If the female wins, she becomes a congregant. Those that fail to find a partner grow ever larger and more aggressive, becoming the bestial riveners.

From starfinderwiki:

Brood-minders quickly regain their prior knowledge and personalities, but their temperaments become somewhat phlegmatic and standoffish, driven by strong urges to manage as big of a brood of young as possible, sometimes killing weak ones to make room for stronger candidates. Brood-minders live a solitary life, herding their broods.

From SF1E AoN:

Brood-minders quickly regain their prior knowledge and personalities, but their temperaments become somewhat phlegmatic and standoffish. They are driven by strong urges to manage a brood of young ikeshtis. They have no instinctive preference for their own young and seek to add newborn ikeshtis to their broods to the limit of their ability to control and guide them, even killing off the weakest young to open up space for candidates who show more promise. Brood-minders live a solitary life, focused on leading their broods to food sources and keeping them alive.

I updated Kala Jayne's geared up HF minis to include her hoverboard and duffel bag.

Jahn Soter

Ancestry: Human (Versatile Human)
Background: Hustler
Class: Envoy (Through Desperate Times)

Jahn is a sour-faced middle-aged human who's spent the last decade or so moving around Akiton to get out of his famous cousin's shadow and return to anonymity.

Growing up in a small Akitonian town similar to Azurite Hollow, Jahn did odd jobs throughout most of his childhood into his teenage years, until a plague swept through. He found himself effectively apprenticed to the local medical clinic as a runner for supplies and "volunteer" nurse, watching his parents get brought in and pass, followed by his aunt and then his twelve-year-old cousin, who was the only one that actually recovered. Thus, Jahn added "parent" to the list of jobs he was forced to take while completely unqualified for as his own mental health spiraled. The arrival of an outlaw gang that effectively took over the town didn't help matters, and Jahn was forced to tend their injuries from the raids they went on as well as those of the townsfolk they brutalized. Arcalinte was the only reason he hung on, feeling obligated to not leave him to face this nightmare alone, and his tenacity was rewarded when a wandering solarian singlehandedly dispatched the raiders and saved what was left of the town. Arcalinte was awed by the man and begged to join him as a student. Jahn, for his part, was grateful at least one of them could have a chance at a future. The solarian, Sola Gorsedd, brought Arcalinte to Absalom Station, while Jahn stayed behind and watched his community drift apart and become a ghost town, prompting him to pack up and leave as well.

Since then, he's drifted from place to place, filling whatever jobs will take him, helping people as down on their luck as he is, and trying to scrape together enough credits to afford antidepressants. Seeing his cousin's name on the news trivids as some hotshot Starfinder hero who blew up a sun-killer and saved the Pact Worlds was as much a shock to him as anyone else, and he did not find the new attention welcome. He didn't want his cousin's charity, nor did he want the enemies his cousin's heroics had made to come after him as some kind of leverage or bait. Nevertheless, Jahn's found he has a tendency to play the hero in spite of himself, refusing to abandon the wounded or sick and resentful of bullies, and while he tries to move on each time to prevent attachments from forming, he may find himself in a spotlight of his own at last, whether he likes it or not.

(Can you tell I've had this guy percolating for a long time now?!)

Bickle and Archpaladin Zousha: I'll be making a post for you to react to in character tomorrow (Friday the 23rd). Consider it sort of a "screen test" for your character. If there are any other last minute submissions I will offer the same opportunity to them.

Hi, all! I'm part of the 'old crew' from our previous campaign. I've been playing and GMing SF2e since it came out (and building my PF2e knowledge along the way because I've been out of fantasy for a hot minute).

Here's where I am with my character concept for GM Q's new campaign. I think she's done, but there's always a chance for some last minute tweaks. I welcome any feedback and backstory connections to other characters!!

@GM Q -- Are we starting at 1st level or going a little higher?

Llyfr (LEE-fur)
Ysoki Bartender Mystic (Akashic connection)
Hephaistos sheet link
Picture of Llyfr working in her makeshift research lab inside Hollow's Chance (hat tip to Google's Nano Banana for the image generation, despite the fact that it can't spell "Starfinder")

Llyfr's name comes from the local word for books. She loved learning since she was little, devouring any knowledge she could find. Her friends teased her about it, calling her "link rat" because she lived in the library and on the infosphere.

She ran the mine's research service and in-house clinic for many years. When the company shut down her department, she moved into Gearwhisker's, a defunct bar and restaurant in town. She renamed the place Hollow's Chance and added a backroom treatment area plus some infosphere terminals for fun and research.

Most in the settlement call her Nista-Llyfr now (literally "book mother") to honor her knowledge and willingness to help everyone.

Llyfr looks after the townsfolk and heals their hurts, expands their understanding, and makes their pain go away through conversation, teaching, spells, medicine, hearty meals, or stiff drinks.

There's an old rumor that when a night raider threatened a family she worked with, Llyfr went full-bore crazed mama on the guy and practically ripped him apart with her teeth. If people ask her about it, she chuckles and waves away the question as the "over-stimulated imagination of some scared kids," but there's always a funny glint in her eye when she says it.

We are beginning at first level, though I anticipate having you all at 2nd level quickly.

[ooc}Okay Bickle, I want to give a chance to do a little role-playing here. Just respond as your character in the following scene:[/ooc]

A hylki pulls up in an older utility vehicle, painted in a high-visibility orange. It's open-topped with room for a driver, passenger, and a convertible back area that can handle either standard size pallet or two more passengers in a fold-down seat. It's clearly a Pinnacle Transport TerraRunner, made to the south in the big city of Maro. They're very common in the more rugged parts of the planet.

The hylki human introduces himself. "I'm Alezandaru Bova. I'm the transportation manager. Since you've been hired on to do some driving, I thought I would show you the ropes of this. It's all we drive around here. Hop in" Alezandaru moves to the passenger side and motions for you to take the wheel.

Seeing his cousin's...

Jahn, same for you. How would Jahn handle the following scene?

Stepping off the local, planetary transport, you see before you the small mining town of Azurite Hollow. According to most reports, there is almost always work here, either in the mines, the local clinic, or one of many supporting operations that support the mine or the small number of travelers and tourists that spend time here.

There is a short walk from the landing pad up a hill. Buzzing about the perimeter of the town are several drones, and there are shobhad guards stationed at the top of the hill. One of the four-armed, brutish-looking humanoids engages you. "Welcome to Azurite Hollow. Where can I direct you? I'm happy to answer any questions, or find someone who knows what you are looking for."

Spellcasting Manifestation in PF2E & SF2E:

Spellcasting manifestions in PF2E and SF2E

The casting of a spell can range from a simple word of magical might that creates a fleeting effect to a complex process taking hours to cast and producing a long-term impact. Casting a spell requires the caster to make gestures and utter incantations, so being unable to speak prevents spellcasting for most casters. If your character has a long term disability that prevents or complicates them from speaking (as described in GM Core), work with the GM to determine an analogous way they cast their spells, such as tapping in code on their staff or whistling.

Spellcasting creates obvious sensory manifestations, such as bright lights, crackling sounds, and sharp smells from the gathering magic. Nearly all spells manifest a spell signature—a colorful, glowing ring of magical runes that appears in midair, typically around your hands, though what kind of spellcaster you are can affect this— academic wizards typically have neat and ordered spell signatures, while a druid's might be more organic and a cleric's might be inspired by their deity. How spellcasting looks can vary from one spellcasting tradition or class to another, or even from person to person. You have a great deal of freedom in flavoring your character's magic however you wish!

Spells can vary in how many actions they take, as shown in the spell's stat block. You cast cantrips, spells from spell slots, and focus spells using the same process, but must expend the spell when casting a spell from a spell slot and must spend 1 Focus Point to cast a focus spell. Some rules will refer to the Cast a Spell activity, such as “if the next action you use is to Cast a Spell.” Any spell qualifies as a Cast a Spell activity, and any characteristics of the spell use those of the specific spell you're casting

Kala Jayne's spellcasting manifestations (when not using the Conceal Spell feat):

For players familiar with the Deadwood series, the way Calamity Jane was portrayed in that series is part of the way I am envisioning Kala Jayne.

auditory manifestion: For most spellls: Kala Jayne passes gas loudly (burps or farts), coughs or sneezes loudy, etc.
olfactory manifestion: For most spells: the stench of her passing gas, etc.
visual manifestion: The sigils on her scales light up.

Her spellcasting manifestions for her Pummeling Rubble signature spell and Elemental Nova focus spell (when used for Earth damage), is instead as follows:

auditory manifestion: the rumble of earth and rocks tumbling down
olfactory manifestation: an overpowering scent of a gluttonworm
visual manifestion: the sigils on her scales light up

Kala Jayne's leveling plan for the first ten levels, with story elements/reasons for her skill feats and one of her signature spells:

”Nice to meet you, Alez, I appreciate you taking the time to show me the ropes.” Bickle doesn’t mention that he’s completely familiar with the Pinnacle. Old pinters like this were the preferred vehicle for smuggling; commonplace and unnoticed, easy to get with a forged registration, good for packing lots of cargo. Bickle took the odd smuggling job when it presented itself, but he wasn’t part of any affiliated gang back in Khefak Depot. That was dangerous business. Besides, no telling who Alezandaru knew. Llyfr had warned him to be careful, eyes and hairy ears were everywhere, even in the small settlement of Azurite Hollow. A smart person got information from books, a wise person got information from their bartender, and although Bickle couldn’t properly put himself in either of those categories, it seemed prudent to follow the advice from his favorite bartender and keep a low profile.

He hopped into the driver’s seat easily and made a brief show of ‘learning’ the controls of the transport. ”So how are folks around these parts, they give the drivers any hassle? Not that it matters much one way or another, I’ve got a thick enough skin.” Bickle pulls smoothly into the light traffic. ”The real trouble is those driverless transports. Am I right?” Like any good taxi driver he throws shade on the automated driverless transport vehicles. ”Bad algorithms, sensors that can’t handle the dust of a mining town, they’re an accident trying to happen.” The Hollow is pretty small, not many options for showing off driving skills, but Bickle makes sure to navigate the narrowest streets on the west side of the settlement, squeezing between other poorly parked transports with inches to spare. ”Bet your automated transports would be incurring a few new claims right there.” Rolling back around to the north end, he looks to show off a bit. ”Should we get out of town for a test drive? This thing seems rugged enough for a little untamed terrain.”

Kala Jayne and GMQ:

I love the idea of a past brood relationship. Can we look at the darker side of the broodminder? Squanch was 'adopted' by Voss. He was poached from another brood and was actually a little older (maybe a year) than the others. He carried a lot of baggage and resentment because he'd been happier in his earlier brood. He also carried stories of the Skyfire Legion which grew into an obsessive phantasy. He left (shortly before you found the jackets, loved that by the way) yelling about joining the Legion, seeing the galaxy, and returning someday as a hero.

You see Squanch for the first time since he left at Azurite Hollow. His clothes and gear don't look very heroic.

Definitely interested in a SF2e Campaign. If too late, I understand.

EDIT!

I am currently running SFS2e and Akiton is the Main Plot line. Also, my home group just completed Strength of Thousands (which has Akitonian motifs).

I seem to be prepared for such a Campaign...lol.

I am interested in playing a Technomancer.

I can have more tomorrow morning if that's ok?

Thank you for running!

You have made it just under the wire. Please give me some details on your technomancer and some background about why they might be in Azurite Hollow.

Jaidu is an Ysoki Technomancer. He is a Security Consultant for the mining operation, Twin Clans Extractives, of Azurite Hollow.

Squanch/GM Quirk:

How does the following sound?

Voss Vertassh and Veke Vadak were clutch-mates and bonded siblings.

During adulthood they left Akiton and joined the Skyfire Legion.  After a few years serving in the Legion a female ikeshti, Kishifray, joined their Skyfire unit. The three of them worked together in the Legion for a decade. Then Voss Vertassh and Veke Vadak started their rutting cycle. With Kishifray being the only female ikeshti in the sector of space they were assigned to, both made their interest known to her. Unfortunately for both males, Kishifray had not entered her rutting phase yet. The non-ideal situation lasted the better part of a year, when Kishifray finally entered her rutting phase.

One night when alone with Voss Vertassh, Kishifray led him to believe she had chosen him over Veke Vadak and took him as her lover.

When Voss and Veke saw each other the next day, each had a look of victory upon their faces. It did not take them long to discover that Kishifray had misled both of them and took both as lovers.

The three of them resigned from the Skyfire Legion and headed back to Akiton so that Kishifray could lay her clutch in the ancestral desert of their homeworld.

As it was unclear whether Voss or Veke was the father of the growing clutch of eggs in Kishifray's womb, or if they were both the father. They had time during their travel back to Akiton how they would handle the traditional deathmatch.

During the talks, Voss discovered that his impression that he had been the first to lay with Kishifray was not true, and that Veke was. So they decided that since Veke was the first to lay with Kishifray he would be the first to face her in a fight to the death.

After Kishifray laid her eggs, Voss Vertassh tended to them as Kishifray and Veke Vadak prepared for their fight to the death.

Kishifray defeated Veke Vadak.  As Voss Vertassh got ready to fight Kishifray, she stopped him and turned it into a celebration of her life for defeating Veke, and Voss Vertassh and Kishifray mated again instead of fighting to the death. Kishifray became a congregrant to the clutch by rejoining the Skyfire Legion while Voss Vertassh stayed on Akiton to become brood-minder to the clutch.

Less than a year after she rejoined the Skyfire Legion, Kishifray returned, once again with a clutch of eggs growing inside her.

She laid her second clutch in another 'room' of the huge cavern that was the home of the Skyfire brood..  Unlike Veke Vadak a year earlier, Voss Vertassh was victorious during his fight to the death with Kishifray.

Before the second clutch was laid, and Voss Vertassh was tending to Kishifray's first clutch of hatchlings, one of the young ikeshti males, Squanch, became obsessed with the three Skyfire Legion jactets that were hung up as a type of banner in the brood's home. Two of the jackets are badly torn (Veke Vadak's and Kishifray's, which were torn during their fight to the death) and the undamaged jacket was Voss Vertassh's.  Their clutch become known as the 'Skyfire brood' and through Voss Vertassh's adept social maneuvering on Akiton, ikeshti soul-soothers, congregrants and brood-minders started to use the Skyfire brood's home as an important trading destination between the different families and clans local to the region.

Young Squanch quickly associated the Skyfire Legion being the reason for the prestige of his clutch and the seeds of wanting to one day join the Legion took root deep within him.

Although Voss Vertassh defeated Kishifray in their fight to the death, he was severely wounded, and it took a few months for him to fully recover from his wounds. While he was recovering, his movements were limited. He could tend to the new clutch (he knows with certainty he fathered all the eggs) but could not climb the walls of the cavern to reach the main chamber of the cavern, where Kishifray's first clutch lived and was being raised.  Another brood-minder took over duties for the first clutch during his months of recovery.

After a few months of recovery, Voss Vertassh was able to once again travel from the first clutch to the second clutch. Voss Vertassh stated that the brood-minder who was taking care of the first clutch during his absence had earned the right to continue to be the brood-minder for the first clutch of the Skyfire brood, with the stipulation Voss Vertassh retained the right to choose any of the young ikeshti from the first clutch and add them to the second clutch. Squanch was among the younglings that Voss Vertassh added to the second clutch.  Although still considered part of the Skyfire brood, not having the Skyfire Legion jackets as part of his new 'home' only made Squanch's yearning to join the Skyfire Legion one day become stronger.

* * *

The other ikeshti do not know something that only Voss Vertassh knows (and Kishifray & Veke Vadak knew): that Voss Vertassh also mated with Kishifray before she laid her first clutch of eggs and might be the father of the first Skyfire brood clutch.

Maybe the reason Voss Vertassh removed himself from Jayne's mystic bond had to do with that secret being revealed to be known by someone else...

* * *

The week that Voss Vertassh went missing.

While Crusher, Sisko, Wildman and Jayne were in Khefak Depot...

In addition to her three bonded brothers being part of her mystic bond (from class), Voss Vertassh is also part of her mystic bond.

Jayne, through the mystic bond, knew that brood-minder Voss Vertassh became badly injured. Being three days away, she could not use her vitality network to heal Voss Vertassh.  Her and her brothers started to head home from Khefak Depot earlier than planned to find out what happened.

During their first day of traveling home, Jayne knows that Voss Vertassh was being healed...and then suddenly she could no longer sense her brood-minder as being part of her mystic bond.

***

When Crusher, Sisko and Wildman fell when the gluttonworm caused the ground beneath them to fall away, she sensed through her mystic bond all of them getting hurt as they fell. She tried to heal Crusher (the medic) through her vitality network, but all of her brothers had fallen more than 60 feet below where the surface of the ground was just moments earlier. Then she sensed each of them die via her mystic bond with them.

They are still part of her mystic bond...death does not remove it. She can sense if they are being moved, become alive again, etc.

As she will never decide to remove her three bonded brothers from her mystic bond, and since Voss Vertassh removed himself from her mystic bond, she has room to add seven others to it.

That will be some roleplaying to have Kala Jayne add other PCs.

The first PC (aside from herself) that will be added to her mystic bond will be Squanch (if he does not prevent it). From Kala Jayne's perspective, him being alive brings her some salvation of hope that some of her clutch-mates and other older siblings might also be alive.

Apologies! I actually meant to post more last night, but my eyes betrayed me!

Here is just a personality prose.....

So you have to work?:

Must be joking! This is a joke right!? I put in my request last month! This sucks!

The not too subtle, definitely the annoying sounding tones and tenor demonstrate his displeasure, the dark gray fur Ysoki standing in front of the new weeks schedule pouts.

Drake! You want to work this weekend, right? Care to trade days? There's this new Shumka band playing in Khefak Depot this weekend. I kinda already bought tickets....

Another Ysoki (presumably named Drake) smiles knowingly at his struggling co-worker.
Perhaps you can sell them, Jaidu....

Jaidu (wearing his security uniform with the Twin Clans Extractives' symbol stitched standardly on his shoulder) frowns at his only hope.
This doesn't have anything to do with that recent rumor that has been circling about you and peanut butter...I had nothing to do with that ..

This would be Dorian Grey's work in progress....

If desired, I shall continue adding to his Profile, concerning Crunch and Fluffy bits.

Jahn looks up at the shobhad, quietly assessing the guy to see if this was just a friendly greeting or the start of a shakedown. Though when you were dealing with shobhads, those things often went hand-in-hand-in-hand-in-hand.

"Blessings of the sky above, the land below and Ka who stands between them, to you and your ancestors," he says in Shobhad to greet them. Traditional greeting in his own tongue would signal respect, marking him as a potential new neighbor rather than an outsider looking to make a quick credit and then run.

"Looking for the town's administrative offices, specifically, or closest equivalent," he says, knowing on Akiton it could be anything from an actual city hall to the local bar depending on how poor the place was. "I'm in need of work and lodgings to do it from and I figure that'd be the place to find both."

Just a quick update:

I have accepted Kala Jayne into this campaign. I'm contemplating the three other submissions (which are all excellent and worthy, by the way). I'll be making a decision in the next 48 hours or so as far as whether we take another PC, and who it will be.

We had our Foundry SFS1e game last night so I can clean him up tonight after work.

I'm so excited!

After taking a great deal of time to consider the remaining three submissions, I have decided to offer a spot to Bickle.

I can't thank Dorian Grey and Archpaladin Zousha enough for their excellent submissions. I would welcome either of you into one of my games in the future if there is a spot, and I hope you watch out for any new recruitment I might be doing (or maybe we'll have an opportunity to play in a game together--Zousha, I'm pretty sure we have in the past).

Much appreciated! Enjoy SF2e! We absolutely love it.

Dorian, APZ, sorry to see you go. You two wrote some great stuff.

Thank you. :)
