I've said it before and I'll say it again. This game doesn't have to be like every other MMO out there and one thing that seems almost religious about MMO's is that they all have cooldowns.

Why not use a system of resting (just like in Neverwinter Nights). This effectively slow down gameplay also and forces more interaction between players in the group.

Besides being much closer to the core rules which I hope is what we all want right? Cause this is still a pathfinder/D&D MMO we are talking about. Making another MMO is according to me not just slapping on different looking characters and enironment saying its now an 'X' MMO. (Like Star Wars and Warcraft where the only difference is just that.)

Now to slightly stray off-topic a bit:

All MMO's for some reason put most of their focus on the first 'M' in MMO instead of the second. We must not forget 'Multiplayer' is still in the equation. Especially for a wannabe D&D game this is extra important. Lets remember people...we want to get closer to pen and paper D&D, not WoW.

To get back more on topic:

Using some kind of Diablo-like (with meters for mana and hp) system is even worse and will just make this game fall into the actionRPG pitfall that all RPG games today seem to fall into.

The ingredient method is slightly better...but then again...this is not Ultima they are making here....

For me it feels like the developers of standard MMO's are constantly bombarded from users who cry out when they have made a PC build choice that isn't good.

For some reason the developers are then forced to streamline everything so that you can't go wrong...then just to make everyone happy they also have to erase every difference that the classes had...or heck...lets just make one class to rule them all...

For me D&D is too make your choices and then stand for them...be it good or bad...we don't play a bard to be good in battle...we do it because we want to be cool...

Its not a "problem" to go "against" WoW and its clones.

In fact it is still probably a safe way because there are so many players that there will always be some who will be fooled by a new game. There will be some minor changes to their gameplay and they will instantly feel that is refreshing...

I was hoping PFO would go a radically different path from most standard MMO's...but judging from developers statements and also the overhelming amount of standard MMO players on this forum says pretty much...

What I mean is that what I care about is how fun the game is to play above any sort of slavish devotion to a preexisting set of rules.

How "fun" something is is relative. Personally I think almost all games today are so "fun" it is sickening. I don't want another stereotype easy to play casual shooter RPG. For once I'd like an in depth RPG that uses strategy and stays closer to the core rules.

If you want more actiony and "fun" games in the same genre you have a whole heap of them. DDO and all other WoW-clones.

I didn't say slavish devotion to the core rules...I said MORE similar to the core roles....without turning everything into a shooter.

Besides...what you want is a slavish devotion to the MMO standard of today. Why aren't you playing any of the plethora of the games that are out there? Heck...you even have the grand-master-WoW-clone coming out real soon...(SWToR). If you want to play something where you will be tricked to think its D&D you have DDO...

Like a developer for Xcom said "Strategy games are not modern" (in reply to why the upcoming Xcom game will break the long standing chain of being strategy games and instead be a shooter).

Umm...a fantasy RPG without dark dungeons?

I mean lets remove all walls also as some might use wallhacks? ...?

EDIT: I might have missed something in this topic. Read a bit down...

I think this forum isn't so bad.

I've seen a lot worse when it comes to MMO's....

About asking people...I don't know if that is the right way. Thats like putting "the people" in the developers seat and basically asking them to develop the game for you. Usually ends in all games being the same (have we seen it before?).

I'm not saying to not let the community discuss and then tune in on the conversation or eavesdrop and perhaps even find some inspiration...but their product has to be their own.

FYI the MMO-genre is actually not failing. It is actually growing.

The only thing that one could complain about is how dumbed down and stereotype the productions have become. For some stupid reason they keep selling as well.

Personally I am hoping for more "indie" kind of MMO's. I mean look at Bioware. They are super talented. They spent a heck-load of money...and lets what they've got...a total, yepp you know what, total stereotype MMO (or WoW-clone if you will).

And its selling. Probably going to make their budget....cause after all that is all they care about at this point.

I think we need something truly new...and the innovation can only come from a high-risk project....the cost doesn't have to be what you mentioned. It can be even lower.
