In doing some playtests for the upcoming summoner class I came accross an item I believe is an error. I am not sure if it has reported elsewhere but the monster "riding dog" does not seem to be of the same power level as the other monsters in the list.

It has 2HD, a better BaB, and a trip attack and seems to be significantly better than any other monster on the level 1 list.

for example here is the stat block for riding dog:

Spoiler:

Riding Dog CR 1/2

XP 200

N Medium Animal

Init +2; Senses low-light vision, scent; Perception +8

Defense

AC 13, touch 12, flat-footed 11 (+2 Dex, +1 natural)

hp 13 (2d8+4)

Fort +5, Ref +5, Will +1

Offense

Speed 40 ft.

Melee bite +3 (1d6+3 plus trip)

Statistics

Str 15, Dex 15, Con 15, Int 2, Wis 12, Cha 6

Base Atk +1; CMB +3; CMD 15 (19 vs. trip)

Feats Skill Focus (Perception)

Skills Acrobatics +6 (+14 jumping), Perception +8, Survival +1 (+5 scent tracking); Racial Modifiers +4 Acrobatics when jumping, +4 Survival when tracking by scent

Here are the stats for the wolf from the level 2 list:

Spoiler:

Wolf CR 1

XP 400

N Medium animal

Init +2; Senses low-light vision, scent; Perception +8

Defense

AC 14, touch 12, flat-footed 12 (+2 Dex, +2 natural)

hp 13 (2d8+4)

Fort +5, Ref +5, Will +1

Offense

Speed 50 ft.

Melee bite +2 (1d6+1 plus trip)

Statistics

Str 13, Dex 15, Con 15, Int 2, Wis 12, Cha 6

Base Atk +1; CMB +2; CMD 14 (18 vs. trip)

Feats Skill Focus (Perception)

Skills Perception +8, Stealth +6, Survival +1 (+5 scent tracking); Racial Modifiers +4 Survival when tracking by scent

The only thing the wolf has on the riding dog is an ac that is 1 better. The riding dog is in fact better offensively than the wolf (better attack bounus, and a better chance to trip).

Has anyone else made the same observation or am I making some sort of miscalculation. It seems it would be much better for a summoner to summon 1d3 riding dogs with summon monster 2, than it would for it to use any of the other quadrupeds on the summon monster II list.

any thoughts?

love,
