Hi there... I am new to pathfinder and I have been a staunch critic of d&d (d20) ruleset for more than 15 years now. Although D20 has matured a lot since D&D 2nd edition (feats, skills and prestige classes were all great ideas to customize characters) I still found that the hit points system and MOST IMPORTANT the level system are a relic from the past... something that should belong to the middle ages of RPG and not to modern systems...
So I devises this fix.
The basic question is: What in 3.5 (and Pathfinder) rules system defines a character?
Well his powers, abilities, spells per day, hit die etc... and their improvement from a level to another.
What really bogs me down is that there's no graduality to reflect this... I mean, in Pathfinder with 2000 XP a barbarian improves more than 6 skills, saving throws, hit points etc... one day he hadn't those skills, the following day he does... ALL OF THEM. Is there a way to make this feel more gradual without turning upside down the whole system?
Well maybe I found a way...
Say that our Barbarian (from Pathfinder... but you can easily adapt this concept to any 3.5 or 4th edition character) is LEVEL 1 and he needs 2000 XP to advance to LEVEL 2. Once he gains those 2000 xp 11 features of this character will change - You have them listed here (between parenthesis you'll find those which WON'T change)
Bonus Attack
Fort Save
(Ref Save)
(Will Save)
Special 1
Special 2
Hp
(Feat)
Ability
Skill Ranks (x6 plus BONUS ranks)
If you divide 2000 XP by the number of features changing from lvl1 to lvl2 (11 features) you get 119 (I rounded up). That will be the amount of XP needed to buy separately each one of this features. In this way, with GM permission, you will be able to buy a single 'advancement', effectively customizing your character. More important, you could buy an advancement from a following level (even though you aren't really that level) provided you have the right prerequisites and you have bought the previous one. Say, for example, our barbarian spends 119 XP to get a HP advancement... later (or immediately if he has enough XP to spend - and if GM allows him to do so!) he will spend more XP (according my calculations 275) to buy one more HP advancement. He's still considered Level 1 (he will be considered Level 2 when he has earned/spent 2000 XP or more) but now he's got 2 Hid Dice! At the moment he has no feats/skill advancements etc. Bonus skill ranks for Intelligence and Race are received only when you have reached enough experience to complete a given level so, for example, when our barbarian will have totaled 2000 XP he gains his free skills, free class talents etc. (if any). Also, for skill ranks limitations I made a change... skill ranks from now on will be limited by the number of effective levels reached by a character +3 and NOT by Hit Die total (i.e., a character that has spent 15,000 XP (5th level) can have max 8 sill ranks in a given skill.
I have a prepared some tables... where can I post them?
I also would like to receive some feedback about this system... do you think is going to unbalance the game too much? Any suggestion/comment?
