ooooOOOOoooooo!!!!

I will yell at my TV on your behalf the next time it is on, Gary. Hope you feel better soon.

Like the title says. I know you can choose to fail a check to acquire a boon and that you have to roll to defeat a bane but what about other checks? I'm thinking about this mostly in regards to Master Scourge and and Mister Plugg which are both evaded if you fail a check. In Press Ganged, you pretty much want to avoid Scourge until you have defeated all his henchmen. It almost feel like a disadvantage to have good constitution for this scenario, at least until you actually want to fight the villain.

So, while playing Lady's Favor, my Lem was a bit hard press to defeat Commander Kain as the villain's power prevented him from playing his weapon. He had no choice but to beat him mano a mano with his mighty d4 in strength. Luckily, I had acquired a 'Rage' card earlier in the scenario and I played it right there and buried another card to get an extra 1d10. With that, a blessing of Achaekek and some more help from other players, the little Lem was able to kick the annoying commander off the ship to feed the sharks.

Now, as much as I enjoyed the image of a small halfling beating the snot out of a human, I'm not sure I played that correctly. Can Rage be played during a check that it can affect (i.e. Str, Melee or Con if I remember the card correctly) ? Or, since it doesn't directly affect the check but just gives an 'extra power' that can affect the check, it can only be played before the check, outside of an encounter ?

Just a quick question.

Vindictive Harpoon wrote:
For your combat check, reveal this card to use your Dexterity or Ranged skill + 1d6+1; you may additionally bury this card to add another 2d6. Add another 1d8 if the bane has the Aquatic trait.

Do you get the extra 1d8 vs. Aquatic banes even if you just revealed the card? I'm tempted to say yes because the normal harpoon card has the same text/power except it's missing a burying option.

The the aquamancer role for the new Lini in S&S has a power that says:

S&S character sheets wrote:
□ Add 2 (□ 4) to any combat check by a character at your location against a card that has the Aquatic trait (□ or a ship).

That "(□ or a ship)" part has me wondering ... is there any ship that can be defeated with a combat check ? I thought most of them required survival, perception or a similar skill. Or maybe that part of the power should really be "(□ or to any check to defeat a ship)".

I was just looking at these when I noticed that the Seltyiel mat is using the old 'Eldritch Knight' Seltyiel art. However, in the recently released rule book, he's presented using the newer 'Magus' Seltyiel art (don't mind the Runelords battling in the back ...). It just got me wondering what version of him is on the character cards ...

My group and I were lucky enough to encounter (and acquire) Aldern Foxglove during Undead Uprising. I have some questions about his use in the Foul Misgivings scenario.

I don't have access to the cards right now but the scenario card says something along the lines of "Once a character encounters the Skinsaw Man, you cannot play Aldern Foxglove" while the 'At this location' text of the Foxglove Manor location is (from memory) "Reveal Aldern Foxglove to banish all Haunts in front of characters". So the question is: Can the character at the Foxglove Manor still reveal Aldern to remove haunts after someone encounters the Skinsaw Man? To borrow an expression from the RPG, by RAW, I would say this is like revealing an animal for Lini's power and thus it isn't 'Playing' the card but, by RAI, I feel like you shouldn't be able to do this. What do you all think ?

Also, if the character with Aldern is at the Foxglove Manor when someone encounters a Haunt, can you reveal him and banish the Haunt before making the roll to see if you encounter Iesha (thus rolling your d6 with no bonus) or do you have to deal with the whole Iesha thing first ?

While making spreadsheet versions of the character sheets, I spotted something I am sure is gonna come up at some point. One of Weapon Master Valeros' power is :

Valeros wrote:
You may use Melee in place of Ranged when using a weapon with the Ranged trait.

So the question is: "Does this check loses the ranged trait and gains the melee one?" Or, in other words, is this still a ranged check or it's now a melee check ? Or maybe it's both ? This is important for stuff like monsters with powers similar to Tsuto's or playing cards like Soldier or Archer.

Looking at the Warrens location (General Store, Garrison and Shrine of Lamashtu can apply too), I was wondering if the extra monster still 'triggers' if you evade the initial monster. I just want to hear people's opinion on this even I'm almost certain the answer to this is yes. The General Store would be pretty silly if Merisiel could just keep evading all the encounters until she has seen all the cards and/or gotten the one she wants.

There's a phrase in the rulebook that's confusing me a bit. Maybe it's because English is a second language to me ... It has already come up in a few other threads but I'd really like a clear ruling on it.

Rulebook page 11 wrote:
If your character doesn’t have any of the skills listed for a check, you can still attempt the check (unless you’re trying to recharge a card; see Recharge on page 15), but your die is a d4.

Does the phrase means:

1. You can only do this if you have none of the skill listed.

or

2. You can do this with any of the listed skills that you don't have.

At first, I thought 1 was the right call but that makes a lot of cards not very useful.

For example, let's say Seelah (Wisdom 1d8, no Perception skill) has a Night Watch (Recharge this card to add 1d10 to your Perception check) and encounters something that calls for a Wisdom or Perception check. If option 1 is the right one, she could only roll her Wisdom (1d8). If option 2 is the right one, she has the choice to either roll her Wisdom (1d8) or play her Night Watch and roll 1d4+1d10.

What the tread title said ... I mean, the standard Bugbear in the monster deck has it. Also, as it stands, goblin raiders are probably more dangerous then him in the Approach to Thistletop scenario.

I like Aeons. I think they are a pretty cool take on a neutral outsider but I'm having a hard time finding extensive use for them in a game. I mean, I can see them appearing if the PC are abusing something or, in some way, putting the fabric of the universe in danger. That's pretty limited use imo. Maybe I should look to others for ideas. Have they been used in any of the Paizo's adventures so far? Come to think of it, an AP centered around the actions of crazed and/or single-minded Aeon(s) could be pretty cool.

I know Katapesh is supposed to be a very cosmopolitan place where all cultures collide (and trade). Still, I wonder if there's supposed to be a lingua franca, used for most of the trading, in the city and the surrounding hinterlands. I initially thought it was Osiriani but the old campaign setting lists the Kelish language first. I guess it could also be Common/Taldane. Personally, I think the such a nation, at the crossroads of many cultures, should have its own bastard language made up of the mix of many others, much like the real world Zanzibar is supposed to have given birth to Swahili.

It might have been discussed before but the lack of details about using the acrobatics skill to avoid AoO has always confused me. I have my own ideas/opinions on how it should work but I wonder what the rest of you do/think. My first question is when do you need to make a check or if you prefer how many checks do you need to do? Once per square? Once per enemy? Once per move action? Once per round? Second, can you "turn it on and off" in a single move action? Per example, if you have a speed of 30 ft., can you move 10 feet normally and then move 10 more feet at half speed, only avoiding AoO in that last part of movement?

Thanks.

The Rise of the Runelords player's guide writes:

Quote:

Few elves make their home in Varisia, with the exception of the

residents of the Mierani Forest. From the giant pines, white
barks, and towering coastal redwoods, the Mierani elves have
sculpted several villages, most notably cliff-side Arsmeril on the
coast and the trading town of Crying Leaf on the edge of the Velashu Uplands.

A player in my PbP RotRL game here on these boards saw this and made Arsmeril the home town of his elven warrior. Now the weird thing is that while Crying Leaf is featured in a lot in the subsequent material, as far as I know that's the only place where Arsmeril is mentioned. I didn't see anything about it in the Campaign Setting book, the Varisia article in Pathfinder #3, in Elves of Golarion or in any of the Second Darkness Pathfinder volumes. Now, this isn't a huge deal but I'm just wondering. First, am I right? Was the place just forgotten / abandoned / moved? Deemed too small to developed? Also, is there any fans/DM created stuff on Arsmeril? Thanks

Sadly, as it is the nature of pbp, my RotRL game as lost a few players and I'm looking for new blood. Probably no more then a couple of new PCs.

You would start at level 2 and playtest version of the Advanced Players Guide classes are available. Characters with a good concept and well integrated in the Golarion/Varisia/Sandpoint world will get priority.

Here's a few more guidelines:

Me wrote:

* Use 20 points (high fantasy) to purchase your ability scores.

* You get max hp and average starting gold at lvl 1 (Average hp values for the subsequent lvls).
* Choose one trait from http://paizo.com/traits and I'll give you another one (it might be a 'custom' one) based on what you write as a background.
* Consult the campaign’s players’ guide for information on Sandpoint and Varisia and try to explain why your character is in Sandpoint at the moment of the Swallowtail Festival (this can be really simple ... you could just live there for example).

Any interest ?

Ok, I just have a simple question. In the core book, the conditions appendices say that the 'grappled' condition gives a -4 penalty to dexterity (p 567). Meanwhile, in the combat chapter, table 8-6 states that a grappling defender loses any dexterity bonus to AC if his attacker isn't grappling (p 195). So, my question is: which one is right?

Sandpoint, 1st day of Rova, Early Morning

As the sun lazily rises above the nearby peaks of the Ravenroost, the small town of Sandpoint is already full of activity. While today is the officially the first day of autumn, the cloudless sky and warm air seems to indicate that summer hasn’t really ended yet. The first day of autumn is the day when the Swallowtail festival is held, a holy day of gathering and celebration for Desna’s faithful. This year, the festival is especially special for Sandpoint since the occasion will serve to consecrate the newly built cathedral. And so, with this many reasons to celebrate, excitement is already felt in the cathedral square as residents and visitors both start to arrive, and several merchant tents featuring food, clothes, local crafts, and souvenirs are there to meet them.

Calla:
You’ve lived in Sandpoint with your family for almost a month now and you are slowly starting to get use to the life here, in the lowlands. The small house you rented is modest but it’s at least a roof over your heads. You spend most days in the nearby woods, hunting and trapping various game. By selling the finest meats to the White Deer, one of the town’s inn owned by a fellow Shoanti, and some skins and pelts to the tannery, you’ve managed to keep your family afloat. Your father seems proud of you but he’s usually in a dour mood. He helps you as he can with hunting but his old wounds prevent him from doing much. He managed to get hired at the local tannery thanks to his great knowledge of pelts and furs but left the job after a few days, saying that he couldn’t work for this ‘lowland slavedriver’ as he puts it. Galdor seems to be enjoying himself here. Most of the children don’t care about his mixed heritage but you’ve seen the looks he gets from some adults. Today, the Swallowtail festival might offer you a chance to mingle with the inhabitants of Sandpoint and get to know them better.

Izbahn:
Go out and gain experience, the headmaster had said. You are not sure relaxing in Sandpoint was what he had in mind when he told you that, but you really needed a break from studies. For the last few days, you've enjoy the spacious accomodation of the White Deer inn in Uptown Sandpoint. While the Shoanti proprietor is a bit gruff, the big clean room more then make up for it, a much welcome change from the extremely cramped dormitories the Twilight academy offered its apprentices. Today, there's plenty of activity in the inn's common room, as it is almost filled with strangers that have come to town for the Swallowtail festival. Lots of the Deer's employee have already left for the cathedral square to prepare the inn's pavillon at the celebration. You looking forward to attending the day's festivities. At worst, you will simply eat and drink your fill and, at best, you will find something interesting, perhaps even business opportunities.

Syeira:
So far, you've quite enjoyed yourself in Sandpoint. The owner and operator of the Rusty Dragon, Ameiko Kaijitsu, has turn out to be a kindred spirit and fast friend. From what she told you, she also fled her overcontrolling family in search of adventure but eventually came back to her hometown. She compliments you for your dancing and musical talents while you have become quite jealous of her beautiful singing voice. For now, you've managed to stay at the inn free of charge, as long as you entertain the guests come sun down. Today, the Swallowtail festival has finally arrived and you're quite excited to attend. When you woke up this morning, the inn was already full of activity. Not only is the inn overflowing with guess, but Ameiko's kitchen staff is putting the final touches to the food that's being offered by the inn at the cathedral square.

Venmirl:
It's been a few months since you've first arrived in Sandpoint and found work at the town's church. You've heard some people saying that they dislike having a ‘godless savage’ watching over their dead but, for the most part, you've been well accepted, especially by Father Zantus, Naffer Vosk and your landlords. This morning, the sun shines especially brightly on The Old Light, the ruined remains of a colossal Thalissonian lighthouse, or so they say. In his writing, your grandfather seems to imply that there is some link between ancient Thassilon and the Shoanti people. You'd like to believe him but, everytime you see an awe-inspiring Thalissonian monument, you wonder what could possibly link the ancient empire and your proud but simple people. But today isn't really the day to ponder over the journal of your grandfather. Today, the people of Sandpoint celebrate and consecrate the new cathedral. As you were asked by father Zantus, you've spent most of the previous day helping to build a small podium in front of the church and putting decorations around the cathedral square. You hope your effort will help others enjoy the day and, in turn, they will more readily accept your presence at the church.

Zelazny:
You've only been in Sandpoint for less the a day but it's already been good for you. The Rusty Dragon proved to be quite the enjoyable inn. After numerous days of travel under the rain, you were pretty much just hoping for a roof over your head, a warm fire and some hot grub. Instead, you've found an inn full of excitement and merryment where the food is tasteful and inventive, and where the patrons and staff exchange story, song and dance. The proprietor is Ameiko Kaijitsu, a young woman with an exotic beauty. Today, the rains have stopped and the townfolk prepare to celebrate the Swallowtail festival. Even this early in the morning, you can feel the excitement in the air. From what you've heard last night, most of the day's fun will be at the new cathedral square.

This is just a short opportunity to establish your character as they prepare for the day ahead and maybe interact with some people of Sandpoint. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like and when I feel we're ready, we'll move the scene to the cathedral square.

First, here's my review of the 6 characters in details. It's all very 'matter-of-fact' and impersonal but bear with me. I'm just a bit of a perfectionist.

Syeira Iliosana
Languages : Paizo must have changed it's mind about having a Cheliaxian language at some point because the more recent publications consider it to be Common (and the same as Taldane). So just select another one.
Hit points : I also don't see any hp total and, from what I can gather, it should be 7.

Calla Shadde-Quah
Rage : You can rage 6 rounds/day
Skills : You should have 5 skill points since you're human.

Izbahn Douvurk
Languages : You can select 2 more languages, +3 intel bonus and a linguistic rank should give you 4 bonus languages.
Skills : You wrote that you have 6 skill points but I only see 5 spent.
Gear : I don't see any gear listing so I presume you aren't done with your purchases. In any case, you should at least get a spell component pouch.

Venmirl of Skoan-Quah
Weapon proficiencies : I'll be generous and say that the favored weapon of your 'deity' is the klar (it makes sense anyway) because otherwise you wouldn't be proficient with it.
Skills : You don't have the Totem Spirit (Skoan-Quah) feat so you shouldn't get the bonus to heal (but see below in the traits). Also, Knowledge actually encompasses a number of different specialties/skills, so you need to choose one specialty for your skill. Inquisitors are proficient with Knowledge (arcana), Knowledge (dungeoneering), Knowledge (nature), Knowledge (planes) and Knowledge (religion) so you probably want to choose one of those.
Gear : I don't see any gear listing so I presume you aren't done with your purchases. In any case, you should at least get a 'holy' symbol or some sort of tribal object to act as your divine focus.

Zelazny
If you only have the beta version of rules, you can always consult the prd for the most current rules.
Weapon proficiencies : Human don't get a free weapon proficiency anymore.
Skills: With Trapfinding, your disable device should be +8 and Perception for traps is +5.
Starting money : It should be 140 gp not 200.
Favorite class : You don't seem to have the bonus from a favored class. You choose it at first level and whenever you gain a level in that class, you gain an extra hp or skill point (your choice). In your case, it will probably be rogue or sorcerer.

Satieah Flame's Daughter
I understand this one is a work in progress and there's a few thing missing (languages, gear, a trait)
Favorite class : You don't seem to have the bonus from a favored class. You choose it at first level and whenever you gain a level in that class, you gain an extra hp or skill point (your choice).
Touch of flame damage should be 1d6 not 1d6+1.
Also, I really think she should be a Varisian rather then a Shoanti. The dance and sing skills and the weird powers at birth all scream Varisian to me. But that's just me, she's your character :).

Since there's already a few gm running this on these boards, I'm wondering if anyone would be interested in (yet another) Rise of the Runelord game. I've always wanted to run Rise of the Runelords but never got the opportunity to do it with my face to face group so far. Anyway, if I can get 4-6 players who can post regularly, I'll get it rolling here.

I got another campaign in the 'pipeline', so to speak, my adaptation of the Freeport trilogy (by Green Ronin) set in the Shackles. I might run this instead if people express more interest in this one.
