"That or we have indeed fallen for a trap and she was simply after the Monadastic Archive for herself." Visuris takes a moment to interact with his surroundings, checking to see if they're in the Material Plane or somewhere new.

Visuris raises an eyebrow at woman. "How terribly irresponsible of you. If you're set on sending novices into the unknown though," he looks to his new friends with a smile, "someone must make sure they're safe. We will go."

Ironbeard adds "Cold Iron Armor Spikes" as a weapon in your arsenal. It's strength based, but can't be two-handed for Strength and a half. If you have Weapon Finesse like Benny, it can be Dexterity based, since Armor Spikes are light weapons. Magic weapon only applies to a single weapon, which I went with the beard to beat DR.

"Itia, cast Guidance on Cordon. Keep the magic flowing through his blood." The viper uncoils from inside Visuris's robes and snakes over to Cordon. Perhaps surprisingly, the viper whispers to Cordon in Common. "That was a goooooood first shot. Let's make it happen again." With that the reptile gives a small bite to Cordon, filling him with divine magic. Guidance on Cordon.

As for Visuris himself, he steps forward to the Div and raises his shield Total Defense. "Come little beast, let's see if you can manage to bite an old man."

Visuris will apply all of the enchantments he's capable of, expending his 3 spells for the day, giving Ram a set of +1 Cold Iron Armor Spikes and Benny a set of Cold Iron Armor Spikes as well. Itia then casts Guidance on the group and Visuris takes his position closer to the mask, prepared to meet this fiend head face to face.

Apologies, sometimes I can get carried away!

Visuris offers a drink of ale to Ram as he goes over the details of his plan. "If you'll both accept, I'll cast a spell called Ironbeard on each you. It causes you to grow a stiff beard of Cold Iron Spikes, functioning both as armor and as a weapon."

You gain Cold Iron Armor Spikes as a weapon that deals 1d6 damage, and you gain a +1 bonus to your AC. On Benny they will deal 1d4 damage as a small creature. It lasts 1 minute.

"Afterwards I will cast Magic Weapon on you Ram, to make your weapon both more accurate and more damaging."

Your Cold Iron Armor Spikes will gain a +1 Enhancement Bonus to Attack and Damage Rolls. It lasts 1 minute.

"My viper here, Itia," a serpent pokes its head out from the folds of Visuris's robes before hiding back inside, "will then cast Guidance on us all, for further accuracy."

We'll each gain a +1 Competence Bonus to our next attack roll or saving throw.

"And lastly, Dhovahk has offered to bless all of us, so that our attacks may yet further ring true."

We'll each gain an additional +1 Morale Bonus on attack rolls and saves vs fear. It lasts 1 minute.

"After our preparations have been made, we can loose this guardian. We'll certainly be a force to be reckoned with. Is this plan acceptable?"

Visuris chuckles at his Ratfolk friend's grave expression. "I assure you my friend, we'll make you the most handsome Ratfolk of all."

Provided there isn't any time-sensitive happenings going on, and the rest of the group agrees to a day of rest, Visuris will take the chance to sleep for the night and prepare the following spells in the morning:

  • Ironbeard
  • Ironbeard
  • Bless
  • Magic Weapon

Visuris withdraws his journal and begins scanning the pages. "If we have the time for me to reprepare my spells, I may have some tools at our disposal. If Ram here would like a truly magnificent beard, I can prepare Ironbeard. It fashions a bearded weapon like those of Barbazu demons; in addition to increasing your survivability," it gives a +1 AC bonus that stacks with armor, "the beard itself is a weapon made of cold iron and lasts for a full minute." It functions as Cold Iron Armor Spikes, dealing 1d6 for Medium Creatures and 1d4 for Small. "Supplemented with a casting of Magic Weapon on the beard we could do a good manner of damage to the beast." He turns to Benny with a smile. "I could fashion one for you as well, if you'd like." As Armor Spikes are light piercing weapons, they do also work with Swashbuckler's Finesse. "If we go that route, I could cast Bless instead of Magic Weapon so that we may all benefit."

He flips the pages of his book, seemingly lost in his own musings.

"Prior to releasing the guardian my serpent Itia can cast Guidance on us all to ensure our first attacks strike true."

Visuris taps his fingers to the table with his chin held lazily in his hand. "Win or lose, at this rate we'll lose twenty years of our life regardless." He leans forward, eyes burning into Madame Jelaris as she wastes their time. "Are you toying with us Madame?"

    Sense Motive: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12

He watches the crone intently as he retrieves a chip from Cordon's pot provided Cordon doesn't stop him and tosses it forward.

    Gambling One Token: 1d20 ⇒ 10

He pays no heed to the result of the roll, instead watching the woman. "You're a wicked woman, Jelaris. If you find yourself incapable of conducting business in a licit manner you have no right to conduct business in Katapesh." Visuris breaks his gaze to reach into the folds of his robe and begins withdrawing legal papers from his pack, lying them on the table beside their game. "Having your business shut down would be a small effort. The city officials are merchants, they would be keen to seize your assets and when word of your practices spreads they'll liquidate a value equal to the souls you're demanding—which as you say, is priceless. They'll take everything you own and when they do, we'll arrange a bargain between them and Murqual to purchase the mirror. We will get that mirror one way or the other, it is in your best interest to reconsider your refusal to sell for gold."

Unless I've misunderstood, you roll a die for each token you're gambling, so you would each roll 5 dice now. Then the Madame would roll a single die. For each of our rolls that beats her single die we gain two of her tokens, for each roll that loses, she gains one of our tokens.

There's no fun in skipping a section because there's no mechanical penalty, it's about the story and immersion.

If it's all the same, could we have one player roll the dice and whatever the results are we split the years?

Visuris rises from his chair and joins his companions at the table. While he didn't approve of gambling and found no pleasure in watching the game, like Ram he observes for the sake of his allies.

"Do pay heed to the dwarf, Madame. It's been a while since he's killed anything and I believe he's getting antsy."

I find myself in the same boat as Ram. I've begrudgingly agreed to go along in the spirit of "Explore, Report, Cooperate" but if played to character Visuris would continue looking for ways around paying in mortality, especially as a human follower of Asmodeus. If no creative solutions worked he'd pull from the mission. Madame Jelaris clearly refuses to budge, but Murqual might be convinced to play for his own life.

Visuris raises a confused eyebrow at the undine. "I've condemned Murqual of nothing nor do I have an interest in reviewing cases. I simply suggested purchasing a household slave and offering their life up in place of ours."

The Asmodean crosses the room and settles lazily into a chair, disappointed at the Madame's rigidity despite his best efforts. He withdraws his journal and doesn't look up as he speaks. "Feel free to play for my tokens. Asmodeus is a god of law and just bargaining; not children's games. You're mad if you believe I will participate in gambling on my very soul of which I've promised to the Prince of Hell."

I'll agree to Dhovahk's suggestion, whatever keeps the game moving smoothly.

Visuris sighs and waves his hand. "You'll not extract a drop of my mortality. If you refuse to pay a fair price, then someone's blood will be on your hands. It need not be ours."

The cleric turns to his companions, his expression mirroring Ram's. "I'd prefer it had not come to this, but purchasing a slave is an option. A simple one can be purchased at a meager cost, 10 gold a person would cover it. Let her conscious bear the weight, she has removed our choice in the matter."

Visuris shudders at the idea of sacrificing years off of his life for someone else's trinket. "Twenty years of life is a steep price to pay, in that time quite literally millions of gold can be accumulated. Is this mirror truly worth such a cost? You said yourself you purposely overpriced it out of disinterest in selling to Murqual. While it's true he benefits from this transaction, it's now the Pathfinder Society that will remember your good graces. If word spreads you required Pathfinders to sacrifice pieces of their mortality to complete their goals, when selling for gold was a certainly reasonable alternative, you may find less of our numbers coming here for supplies. I ask you, humbly and as a friend, to reconsider your refusal to sell to Murqual for a more material cost."

You must be a brave and skilled explorer to have plumbed their depths and returned alive." Visuris nods in response to Ram's musings. "I'm certain we'll be able to convince her to come around."

I have been dealing with a family situation the past few days, I apologize for my absence.

Visuris strolls forward, brushing detritus from his finely tailored robes. "I'm glad to have caught up with you friends, you would not believe how hard it is to acquire ink in this city." With the raising of a brow, his eyes scan the faces of the jabbering gnolls and he turns his attention towards them.

"Good evening friends! I trust finding our meeting point was as smooth as ever. You'll find that all of the agreed upon goods are here, and in a more than satisfying condition. We of course will uphold our end of the bargain at the agreed upon price." Visuris speaks with a warm smile. When the gnolls begin murmuring, his fingers tighten around the holy symbol of Asmodeus, held intentionally in view of the gnolls. "We have no interest in cheating you friends, these goods are generous for what you're paying. Murqual is interested solely in maintaining our mutually beneficial arrangements; he selected us because we are no fools." Visuris steps forward, eyes narrowing at the female gnoll he perceives most to be the leader.

"We have given you what was promised, and you're creating perceived problems in an attempt to gain more. Do not tread this path." He motions back to Ram, Cordon, Dhovahk, and Benny. "Myself and my allies are elite agents. You have, in the past, made attempts to alter deals agreed upon with Murqual. Tonight and all future nights you will honor your agreements." The cleric steps forward again, looking down his nose at the beast-woman. "Asmodeus takes such matters seriously and does not endorse those who break contract. He has sent me as an emissary of the law to punish you should you make further attempts to change our bargain."

    Bluff: 1d20 + 25 ⇒ (17) + 25 = 42

With that, he softens his gaze and gives the gnoll his signature smile. "Now back to pleasantries. He returns his journal to the inside of his robe and offers a hand to his pale companion. "No one wants to need an Asmodean barrister, but that need arises often regardless. I believe my particular perspective will be of use to the Pathfinders. The art of killing is a talent in great supply," Visuris's eyes flicker across the sea of faces inside the lodge, "But smart is the man who makes allies, not corpses. A sharp rapping of knuckles on the wood of the bar suddenly requests the attention of the patrons around it, accompanied by a smiling man in a red suit. "Hello there! I presume I've found my way to the famed Flaxseed Lodge of the Pathfinders?" He doesn't wait for an answer as he begins withdrawing papers from inside the red folds of his robe, a dry scrape of metal on metal betraying the presence of armor underneath.

"My name is Visuris, I am a barrister from Mivon." An off white journal bound in black leather emerges from within his garb, followed by a quill. Hanging from his robes and adorning his gear are crimson pentagrams, the symbol of Asmodeus displayed defiantly for all to see. With a smile he begins scanning the lodge for a mission board, giving small nods to patrons when his eyes pass over them. "My blade arm isn't anything the bards will tell tales of, but my strengths lie in something much greater. The art of the word." He doesn't seem to address anyone in particular as he speaks, seemingly still looking for someone in charge. "And if a man wanted to become a Pathfinder... where would he begin?"
